14 Pros and Cons of Using the Reedsy Writing App

Is Reedsy a good writing app? Today, I share some of the pros and cons of the Reedsy book editor and why it's still among my favorite apps for beginner authors.

Keep in mind this list of benefits and drawbacks is based on my own opinion of using the Reedsy writing app after writing two books on the platform. So, what you might think of as pros and cons may not be the same as my opinion.
Still, this is a list of things that you can expect from using the Reedsy book editor. Overall, it's not a terrible system, and since it's free to use, you don't really lose much other than time in trying it for yourself.
Overall, Reedsy is a decent system to get you started in self-publishing. You don't have to use the premium services and you can export the book at any time.
This video simply highlights the best functions I have the most use for in the tool. From being compatible with the Grammarly Chrome extension to setting goals, Reedsy provides a lot of the functionality that I am looking for in a writing app. However, there are a few downsides that I go over in which you might want to consider using another. But as I said, it is completely based on user preference.

You're welcome. I like using Reedsy quite a bit. I just wish they'd address a few of the issues I have with it. Mostly, I would love collaboration ability as well as a better layout for formatting. Aside from that, I used it to publish my latest book, Kingmaker, and it turned out nice.

@EmmanuelNataf if Reedsy could add a feature to track characters that would be amazing! That way the author can track when and where certain characters show up to make sure they don't run into plot holes where a character that was supposed to have meaning suddenly is never heard from again or of they changed a character's name they can see it quickly when they miss it. Also, is Reedsy accent friendly? Does that make sense? It probably doesnt.

@EmmanuelNataf yes, exactly that. I'm just now getting in here to play with it and setting up my first book. He didn't go over that feature in the review but it has been super helpful in Living Writer while I write my first Crime drama. Making sure I can track my characters and clues is a life saver.

I've watched this review a number of times now and I'm picking up useful things every time. That means I'm either a simple creature or it means you've done a really good job packing this with useful information. I like that idea better than me being a dummy so I'm going with that. Now I'm going to look for a way to justify the text in Reedsy because I think justifying the writing is a must do.

I am just now starting to use Reedsy, but I have a second screen, so with the Planning Tab, I just right click and open in a new tab, so I can have the full Planning screen open on another window. Probably not something a lot of people can do based on working on a laptop or having limited space for multiple monitors, but figured I would toss that out there.

@@EricSexton Having a second monitor is a game changer, that is for sure. Best part is that most laptops nowadays let you use monitors and televisions as well. 🙂

Great review, I've been using Reedsy for a couple of years and find it very easy to use. It does have a shortcoming for which they have given me hope of help. I expect it is a trivial issue, but I have a book set in the 1860s. I have chosen two fonts that might be associated with handwritten letters. Unfortunately, Reedsy has no ability to use such fonts. It has the ones it has, and that's it. Will Atticus, Scrivner, or another editor/compiler allow such a thing? Thanks Great video. Keep it up.

Thank you. They've given me hope of addressing a few things I bring up in the video as well. I believe Scrivener has access to all of your fonts, but not sure how it renders them for print. And Atticus has a slew of formatting options including fonts. As they both export as PDF, they both should render the fonts properly. I'm not 100% sure on MOBI or ePub. Thank you for the future video idea, though. 😊

Agreed. It's easily among my favorites and why I still use it today to write my next book. I'm really looking forward to what they come up with next. I've heard rumors that some of the things I covered in this video are going to be addressed. I'm hoping for online collaboration. :)

So can I use it to upload to amazon and get a print book? Also, Scrivener is horrid for me - I can't figure it out for the life of me. I use it on a PC and I can't figure out which file is my entire book to export to word. It takes way too long to figure out.

Yes. In fact, my latest book, Kingmaker, was written and exported from Reedsy and upload to Amazon in October. I have a tutorial on doing so slated for the future, but it's pretty easy. The hardest part is making sure it's formatted. As for Scrivener, it is a difficult piece of software, to be sure. I'm also working on tutorials for it, though. :)

By the way, I own Atticus. I don't like it either. But I have never tried to put a finished book in Atticus to publish.

Atticus isn't bad, but it lacks a lot of things I rather like in Reedsy. But, I can say that Atticus has one of the most amazing formatting tools I've seen on any app. I've never used it export a book yet, but I am looking forward to giving it a try with my newest novel.

I can't find the answer to this one simple question. What size is the printed font? 12 point? I just read a book formatted on Reedsy that was only 11 point which is too small??!

The default font size for Reedsy is 12 point. If the book was at 11, it could have been that the author imported the manuscript into a formatting tool like Atticus or even Word to make the font smaller before uploading it to the book platform. Some people will do this to ensure the book doesn't "seem" too long and to shrink down the number of pages. Hope that helps. :)

I am writing a programming code heavy student text book, is Reedsy good for this?

Hmmm...so, I am guessing heavy with examples and images for the textbook. Something like that might be better with Scrivener. However, it really depends on how you want to layout the book. You can import images easily into Reedsy, and it has all of the necessary type formatting tools for various purposes. But I'm wondering if a more advanced layout app would suit the textbook better. In the worst-case scenario, it's free to create an account, so you can try it yourself to test the waters for which you're looking. At the end of the day, it really comes down to what you need the writing app to do outside of simply writing text.

@@tachederosee9172 Have you tried holding down shift and hitting enter? It should move the cursor down one space instead of making a whole new paragraph. That is as long as I'm understanding what you're trying to do. I hope that helps.

You can change the book's title in the Manage option of the Reedsy bookshelf under your book. Hope that helps.

Thank you. I've been testing out the music to see if it makes a difference in retention on the videos. For the most part, it appears videos with music have a higher degree of engagement. I haven't added music in a while, though. Mostly because it's extra work and I don't have time. lol Thank you for the compliment. 🙂

I would, but I'm currently running a case study to see how much of an impact background music makes on video retention. So far, it increases by a good 20%. Quite interested to see the end results, actually.
