A Weekend of Oar Making
In this episode, I have a rough sawn length of Sitka Spruce delivered from Robbins Timber near Bristol and ogle at how straight grained and quarter sawn it is! After halving it, I proceed to cut and shape an oar out of each length. This video is good for anybody interested in woodworking, rowing or just intrigued by the process of turning square stock into round handles without a lathe.
Worth saying... though the oars made in this video are for the clinker dinghy I'm currently building, I'm always looking for ways to fund the build! If you (or anyone you know) has any interest in having a set of oars made, don't hesitate to get in touch through my website or social media direct messages.

My names Michael Cadwell (or Mister Cadwell to some). Having just returned from building & restoring boats in Sydney, Australia, I’m back in the UK and beginning a new build of a 14’ traditional clinker sailing dinghy, designed by Will Stirling. Having trained in the boatyards of Cornwall, I’m an old-school boat builder who loves hand tools, dovetails and anything to do with wood. Follow along as I document this next build in my new workshop in Bath.
