Years ago, when I first started having bad depression, I went to visit a therapist. I drove over there but arrived early so parked in a nearby car park to wait and, because it was a hot day, I had both the driver and passenger doors open. After a while a cat jumped into my passenger seat, had a bit of an explore in the back, then sat in my lap. It was like he knew why I was there. When it was time for my appointment I didn't want to turf him out where there were dangerous cars about so I started the engine and drove very slowly, with him still purring in my lap, to the edge of the car park where it was safer to let him go. All these years later I have never forgotten him and I truly believe he was sent to keep me company and let me know I was loved.

All the cats I've had a were afraid of water, except one he was polydactyl and surprised me one day I was out on a small lake on a float, I left him on the shore chasing after bullfrogs. I turned to see where he was and couldn't find him then I noticed something in the water, it was him swimming out to get me. I paddled closer to him and lifted him onto my float. After that I couldn't keep him out of water, and I was using a cheap plastic float, so I bought him his own float that was canvas covered (a little tougher for his claws). And whenever I would go out on the water his float was attached to mine. He was super intelligent too. He was so awesome to have around!!! I called him Bigfoot : ) Thanks for the video. Here's an extremely helpful suggestion that I have learned living with cats for 38 years. Leave their carrier out and about with the door open as opposed to storing it in a closet somewhere and only taking it out when you're taking them somewhere. One of my I have two cats and one of their carriers is on the couch and one is on the bed and they go in and out of them whenever they want and sleep in them. This way the carriers are not as scary thing but rather something that's comforting and they don't feel out of control. It smells like them and all of that. Hope that helps

I've owned two cats (at different times), and I got them both as kittens. Back then, flea treatments weren't available for kittens, and both of mine had fleas. My way of trying to deal with the fleas was to give them a bath most days, while brushing through their fur with a nit comb to pick out the fleas. I took care not to wet their heads too much so water didn't get in their ears. Because I had the water nice and warm, added to a lot of rubbing and attention to dry them afterwards, having a bath became an enjoyable event for them... ...to the point that they purr with the warm water showering over them!!! Sadly, both my cats have died, but as sad as that is, they both had wonderful lives full of love and attention!

When my Fred died on the way to our vet's, my vet hugged me saying he didn't get to treat very many 18 yr old cats. Candi is 19 and still going strong. Being loved by a cat is sweet. No new fur balls until Candi decides to give up living. But we will always have room for more. My secret for long life for my kitty friends, keep their litter box clean, food area and dishes clean, love them on their terms and, as they get old (10+yrs), don't stress them. After they reach age 12, I only take them to vet's if they get injured or not feeling well.

We wanted to adopt another cat ,but we have noticed a black feral cat that was watching us. We've started to feed him, and allowed him to do everything on his own terms. Feral Tyson now decided to stay with us. He have cat flap, so he have his freedom. What we couldn't predicted was the biggest trust from him and bonding. Makes me miss my mom's cat she called Oliver but I called him Puppycat because he acted more like a dog. He was 13 lbs, orange and white. Wasn't afraid of most dogs and would touch noses with dogs walked on a leash by the front yard. Except he didn't seem to care for my dog, which was a beautiful high content wolfdog. He would follow my dad on his one mile walk through the neighborhood, but most of all always wanted me to take him for rides, especially when I had a convertible. He would climb into the dashboard and sit there so he could see where we were going, while also sniffing the air just like my dog. Sadly, he was torn apart one day by two pitbulls that one of the neighbors liked to let loose on purpose to kill cats. Those dogs killed at least 10 cats that we knew of and terrorized countless mothers and children before they could be stopped. The owner of the pitbulls was defiant and proud, thought it was funny that his dogs had killed most of the outdoor cats in the neighborhood. Too bad my Wolfdog was already gone by then. She would have protected the Puppycat, no doubt.

I've always been a dog person but last year I adopted two kittens from separate litters-- a male and a female. My boy Odin is definitely far more affectionate toward me in terms of daily affection, but my girl Astrid can be just as affectionate, if not even more so, when she actually wants to be; which is generally only a few times a week. She will lay on my chest and bury her head under my chin, whereas Odin likes to lay above my head and softly rest his paw on my face. Lol Astrid doesn't typically expose her belly for anything, but Odin does it often. He even likes being pet on his stomach. All in all, my boy doesn't seem to hate anything other than closed doors. He's all about peace and love and harmony and way too chill, and Astrid is my little Independent devil girl. She hates strangers but she's like evil with her hate. She pretends to be nice and rubs up on people and as soon as they pet her, she slaps the shit out of them. My cats DO tell me when something is wrong or out of place, I think most will, the problem is that people aren't being present enough to recognize what they are saying. Back when I had only 3, there was one day when they were talking to me and I was able to give all 3 exactly what they wanted!!!!! I was extremely proud of myself for being able to do that!! If we pay attention to ALL of the ways our pets talk to us, body language, verbal communication, bathroom habits and levels of energy and play habits, we begin to understand what they may be saying when they come and start to meow incessantly!! Good luck, and thanks for reading!

@CatLoverAna you are totally correct on that!!! Nothing will teach you faster or better than hands on experience! I love ALL animals and have had quite a few as pets in my 46 years on earth, but cats are by far my favorite!!! They're so amazingly intelligent, they have such unique personalities and most are very quick to talk with you! Over the years I've figured out a lot of different meows and what they mean, I'm even able to recreate them and speak back in their own language, the look on the faces of cats that I don't know, or see on the street, when you meow to them is absolutely priceless!!!! HAHAHAHA!!!!!! WHAT???!? A human that speaks "Cat-o-neese" ???!?!? How is this possible??!! I love it!!! HAHAHA!!!! There isn't much that compares to winning the trust and love of such a stubborn and smarty-pants creature, I don't know if I've ever felt the love of a human that has made me feel as special as when it comes from a cat! Yes!!!! Adopt the "un-adoptable", there will be something special waiting for you when you pass on to the next level......

We had one cat that took it upon himself to be an early warning. He wasn't trained to do it, and I've no idea how he knew one was coming on before I even did, but whenever one was on the way he'd try his best to herd me to that room. I had a cat when I was a child. The dogs absolutely loved the car. They would look out the windows. They would stick their heads out of the windows if we left them open. We did not own a cat carrier. The cat was not as enthusiastic as the dogs--but he didn't seem to mind the car trip. I think he stayed on the seat and didn't look out the windows. I myself can't stand the smell of diesel or gasoline. When I was a child I would lie on the floor of the car and whine and cry just to make sure my mother (the driver) knew she was supposed to make the bad smell go away! Now that I'm a grown adult, I refuse to take Uber and prefer to take the subway and walk. In fact I have never used Uber in my entire life.

I once lived in my car for a year with a cat. Stormy loved her carrier, she was bottle raised and because when we rescued her we had 3 other adult cats she was kept in her carrier as a safe spot until she was old enough to interact with them. It was always her "house", forevermore. When we lived in the car, she rode in her carrier on top of a couple boxes in the back seat, securely fastened down, but high enough that she could see out the windows. She was a fully adult cat the first time she ever rode in a car, and somehow she took to it immediately, and we never had any issues with her when we were living in the car. She was tiny. Lived to be 13 years old, and looked like she was a year at most, but always the friendliest, bravest, most adaptable cat I've ever had. I have also had a total of 8 cats over the years, and every single one of them have loved belly-rubs to the point where they would lie down next to me, grab my hand and bring it to their tummy so I can scritch it. I think you just have to have the touch. lol

I watch a lot of veterinarian treating cat videos. Often the veterinarian has trouble getting the cat patient OUT of the carrier. They run back in and hide. Sometimes the vet has to tip the carrier upside down. Or remove the door and the roof--maybe the sides, too. Oh! and as soon as the carrier is made available at end of treatment cat immediately runs inside waiting to go home.
@StylesEste Жыл бұрын
Yeah.. Both of my cats love being in the carrier, and belly rubs. Thought it odd at first, but no. They'd just walk up to the carrier (we have a cloth one.) They'd hide in it, play in it, jump on it when the other one is inside of it. And belly rubs are the more hilarious part of the interaction, they just walk right up to us and plop to their side and start rolling around on their back until you pet their belly. The one that does this the most is also the most skittish one.. Like a single sneeze sends him running to different rooms, yet is the first one to go to the most vulnerable position for a cat. They also like baths, though we don't give them baths, they've been known to stand under water facets, even laying in their water dishes. Not the first cats I've had that have liked this, same with blowing on their faces, they do that long-slow blink and try to nuzzle your face when it happens.

I had friends with a cat that hated closed doors even more than my own do. It would have to open every last interior door or there was no peace in the house. You could get up and close all the bedroom doors, hall closet, and bathroom doors and it would promptly go to each one and open them. Having handle levers it had no problem. Close them all and right behind you it would open them again and again and again. Never ever would it not go and open the doors. Other than this little quirk it was a super awesome cat.

We started with them in their carriers, but before I hit a neighboring state at the start of the ride I found the cats were much more comfortable being free to move about the car. Was smart enough to pick up a divider between the front row seats and the rear and wagon part of my vehicle. This meant the cats could be cuddled up in their blankets, easily accessible to food, and one thing my cats adore... Oldies music! It made for a very good trip.

The first time she did this, I was worried she was hurt, or had a UTI, because she sounded stressed. I realized she was reluctant to go in a dirty box, so I cleaned it while she sat waiting. As soon as it was clean, she got in and used it. So, what happened? You can guess. This cat trained me well. I started scooping each time after she used it (when I was home). I have had friends who only cleaned their cats' boxes every few days, or weekly. My cat would have been a basket case and started going in my house. She was very sensitive to odors. She would rush out of the room if I sprayed anything: perfume, hairspray, room deodorizer, etc. The up side of this particular cat's litter box habits? I didn't have to worry about "dirty litter box" smell, and she never had an accident in the house!

Running joke was he rubs legs for treats. He liked to see where he'd been. Was such good company. You have to do this from the beginning and take it slow. You certainly don't want any sudden, albeit, temporary escapes out of curiosity!! June

I took Ash and Phoenix to the vet one day because we had a respiratory virus going around the house infecting most of our cats and Phoenix and Ash had awful eye drainage. Phoenix also stopped eating so I was very worried. In the car Ash was SCREAMING at the top of her lungs. It was so loud her ears turned red. They are both Russian Blues so their fur is grey but you could see her ears were beet red. Both are ok now!

My previous cat walked into the shower and insisted to just sit there getting soaked :') That was a rescued cat from the railroad tracks though so it probably desensitized to rainlike environments and thought the warm water was a nice change of pace for the regular rainstorm. My current cat though... pretty much checks every mark on this list :') He did present his belly sometimes as a kitten but that's more of a game to him than wanting me to actually rub his belly. The whole point I think was that I carefully go there and then he grabs my finger and kicks my arm then rolls around a few times or try to chew my finger before presenting his belly again to repeat the process :') If I actually touched it I got attitude though he just wanted me to play not actually touch :')

I visited a woman who was ill already for 1 year, she was a colleage of me at work and i didn't know she had 2 cats. She welcomed me and made coffee in the kitchen. I walked a little around in the livingroom looking for what kind of books there were and settled myself on the sofa after taking off my jacket which i put on the sofa next to me. After a few seconds 2 cats appeared, looking carefully around and at me, but i ignored them. The first one jumped on my jacket and lay down, the other one settled him/herself at the right side of my leg and started spinning. As my colleage entered the room, she suddenly stood still and said: "No, no, that's not possible". I asked her what she meant. "The cats, they are sitting next to you at both sides, that's impossible". And she told me that every time she got visitors, whether it was family, friends or colleagues, the cats disappeared under the bed and appeared after they had left the house. I told her that cats have a special feeling and that i also love cats, but never call them, i simply let them come to me and they feel fine in my neighbourhood. She was very surprised and accepted my explanation

They love lap invites. If they've been sitting across the room cleaning themselves and you pat your lap and ask them by name, or nickname (if they have one) if they want lap. Nine times out of ten, they will come over and hop up. Good idea not to touch then until they have settled comfortably. You can then bliss them out with a soft rub under the chin.

An easy way to tick off a cat is to literally rub them the wrong way (I.E. pet them against the direction of their fur). That would always get my cat Max’s hackles raised. We never put him in costumes on the holidays, but one time he did get his paws dyed for Easter (He was a black cat with white paws, so for about a month, he had four differently-colored paws). He didn’t seem to mind after the fact, once his paw fur dried out. But giving him a bath? Yeah, you’d want to be wearing some thick elbow length mitts, because he was a whirling dervish of teeth and claws when you got him in the tub.

Our cat senses whether a person is not quite someone she wants to know. And we use it as good information. Certain people come in our house and she immediately likes them and socializes immediately. Other people she runs from instantly. We had a plumber who came to do a repair he was quite the image. He had more piercings than I’d ever seen, tattoos all over extreme dyed hair. She adored him and would not leave him alone. She sat on his stomach as he worked under our sink. Then we’ve had contractors show up and she runs and hides. Needless to say they don’t get the job. If she does not trust them..we don’t either.

My personal experience is that if they have other animals to interact with, they don't need as much of our attention. But when they're the only animal in the house, they need more of our attention. I think that the loss of those other animals also bothers them. Just as humans, they have their own way of mourning. Some might require more attention and others may fall into a depression.

Not all cats hate car rides. The cat we had when I was a child loved going for a ride. He used to lie in the back window. He was an indoor cat at night. And a barn cat during the day. Every morning my grandparents would come and get him. Then they drove 10 km to their summerhouse. 6 hours later they called his name and he would come running and jump into the car and happily lie down in the back window. He was peculiar in that we had to have a litterbox at the summerhouse, as he would pee in the grass, but refused to do no 2 in the wild. He was a great rodent hunter too and used to beat up all the neighbors cats. Tusse, I miss ya!

I do ALL of these things with my cat. There needs to be a rewards system to help them adjust. My cat no longer minds her carrier or the car (my previous cat oddly LOVED car rides). My current cat ENJOYS the vet visits too. She is very social likes the attention she gets there. As for the harness, it’s a gradual thing. She doesn’t like the leash walking situation so I am starting with trips where she has an immediate reward - like the pet supply stores where she can ride in the shopping cart wearing her harness and jump out to pick out the treats she wants. She is two years old and we are doing great together. Happy catting, y’all! 😽

My cat is a mix of Russian Blue and Main Coon Cat (so he is huge and blue-gray). His name is Stormy, because he wandered into my open door during a rainstorm and never left. He follows most of your guidelines, except for two. #1) He loves visitors, whether they're strangers or not. Even if the visitor is my landlord who has a rule against cats, and your trying to keep him out of sight. You just can't keep him away from anyone who visits. #2) My cat digs car rides. When he was a kitten, I took him on many road trips between cities that were hours apart and he sits on my shoulder, looking out the windshield. I even road tripped him from St. Louis, Missouri to Los Angeles, and he was fine with it. He's a road cat.

About getting a cat accustomed to car rides: I've read somewhere that, supposedly, one way to do this is to work up to taking them on _more_ rides, either to random places in town or just driving around (which may lessen the association between car rides and vet visits). Of course, 'working up' likely needs to start with bringing them into the car but not moving, then taking them on some trips lasting only a few minutes until they seem comfortable with longer rides. Starting the process when they're young works better too, right?
@pingidjit2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Also getting cats used to their carriers helps as well. All good cat guardians should train the cat to associate the carrier with good things so that in case of an emergency (fire or worse) you can easily get them into it. Starting with just having it out with food in it, then rewarding them for getting in and letting you close the door, working up to them getting in and being taken to another room/outdoors/car etc. Let them scent it up so its a safe space. Knowing their carrier is safe makes car travel much less stressful on them.

I've been a cat lover since I became aware of their existence. I had just assumed certain things were a given - such as cats not wanting to be put in any kind of clothing/costume, head gear, etc. For the most part, this seemed to be the overall consensus. Several years back, when cats were surging in popularity, I started noticing the awful trend - it's hard not to fault the big box pet stores like PetSmart and Petco because they made it a point to sell these things for cats. I think there was an increase in first-time cat owners and chances are, these people were actually already dog people. With the huge rise in cats in commercials, plus the internet, and marketing in general, I was horrified by what I was constantly seeing - MISERABLE KITTIES BEARING THE SHAME OF APPARATUS. It is impossible not to notice. I was in a 5 Below store & came across cat stickers. These particular stickers were made in China and had all of these pictures of cats wearing "vegetable" costumes, or "fish" - they were trying to make the cats look like sushi - first off, that's ridiculous. Second, every sticker had an unhappy cat. I almost felt like crying. I honestly don't know any cat person who has ever said, "Ah, screw it, she's getting the denim vest today, whether she wants it or not.

#1: Being Ignored - My cat loved to scrap, but there were rules. He would never initiate it, I had to provoke him to attack. One day, he wanted a scrap, but I wouldn't give it to him. I just kept being relentlessly nice to him, and as long as I did that, he couldn't throw down with me. He'd stroll past me, tail high waiting for me to give it a tug, he'd pause waiting for it, and I'd just pet him. It was driving him nuts, and I did this for about two hours. Finally, i gave his tail a little tweak, and the look on his face was like Christmas had come, and the scrap was on.

Yes, a cat usually has pent up energy they must release. This is by skittish running, chasing, or scraps. A male cat is even more like this. They need to feel safe first, but then it's an energy and anxiety release.

Excellent summary. The cats that own us all hate stale food or food that something is obviously wrong with. It is easy to write them off as being picky. We look after a colony of strays with food assistance from the SPCA (their switch to a trap, neuter and release policy left us with a problem). Being taken to the vet (bottled up in a carrier) doesn't go down well and traveling in car isn't enjoyed either. Mostly they are content - we have far too soft a spot for them. Treats of one sort or another are frequent. Occasional dosing with medicine requires a bit of underhand trickery. The part Persian (Prince Charming aka Angora) is OK with a daily groom above and below. Demands it in fact.

I got my two cats as kittens when I was still in undergrad. I go to school 1000 miles away from where I grew up. There was a 2-3 week gap in between when my lease was up and when my new one started, so I had no other option but to go home. They were only about 3-5 months old at this point, and I knew keeping them in a crate for that long wasn't going to do it. My older cousin showed me how she had some sort of cylinder thing she put in the backseat when traveling with her cats, but I didn't have any room for that because my entire apartment was packed into my small car. Long story short, I just got them harnesses and leashes, set up their litter box on the floor of the passenger side, draped a blanket over the seat and put their bed on it, and then hooked their leashes around the head of the seat. My one cat who loves attention crawled right over onto my lap. I let him, because its the only way he wouldn't cry because he needs constant attention. My other cat just laid curled up in their little bed. Sometimes they would switch places and the other cat would come snuggle on my lap while the other one went potty or snuggled in the bed. I know its not "safe" to let them roam, but they never tried jumping down by the gas pedal or anything like that. They just wanted to be close to me. And that is how we drove 17 hours to my parents house and 17 hours back without any issues (except one of them knocking over an energy drink I had in the cupholder onto my emergency brake and then that beeped for like an hour but eventually stopped so it was fine lol).
