If you have a CCW permit the police should not know you have a gun and the encounter should be routine. I have been stopped once since carrying and was issued a warning for not completely stopping at a sign. Since my state does not require telling the officer you are carrying I didn't and in 10 minutes I was on my way.

In Texas non-CPL holders you do not have to do that unless asked so don’t. The law is different for CPL holders who must present their card with their driver license and disclose.

I’ve had the same conversation with a Trooper in NC, where you MUST notify a LEO if you carry a gun. He told me exactly the same thing. Then we had a 30 minute discussion on our favorite guns. Didn’t even get a warning.

My wife and I went to a concealed carry seminar in our state that was organized by a local politician. We were told by a state trooper not to say, "I have a gun." That could be overheard by the second officer if there is one . That could end badly due to misunderstanding. We were told to hand the officer our concealed carry permit. That covers it without blurting out, I have a gun. It's not required in our state but "appreciated ".

The police never know if you have a gun or not in your vehicle when you get pulled over if you do not have a concealed carry permit or any kind of permit but if you do have a permit they know you have a gun soon as they run your tags to your vehicle if it's your registered vehicle to your name and your address so just expect them to already know your arm as they're walking up to your vehicle . because they will not walk up to your vehicle until they have ran your tags first. They will sit in their car for 2 to 3 minutes before they walk up to your car and that is when you know they're running your tags is common sense so don't even leave a comment saying they don't do that in certain States because I live with the police officer and I know

I live in a no-tell state. Having said that, when I get stopped, I tell the officer/trooper: "Officer, while I am under no legal obligation to do so, I have law enforcement friends who have asked that I inform you I have a fully loaded firearm on my hip that is currently covered by the seatbelt." With one exception, there was no issue made. A few times, I was cut a break on the unfraction, and once, the officer and I talked about my carry and the weapons we have at home. After about five minutes, he told me to slow down and walked off without my license.

SC recently changed our firearms laws, basically anyone who can legally own a pistol, can carry.....but they left in place the provision for getting a concealed carry permit. This is for people who travel across State lines to States with reciprocity. Haven't been stopped for a traffic violation, but at a sobriety checkpoint, I handed her (female cop) my driver's license and CCP. It instantly tells them that you have been vetted by the Law Enforcement Division. Now they know that they can relax because it's highly unlikely I'm going to give them problems.

There is minutia to all this too. In AZ we do not have to inform of a gun but you do have to tell the truth about it if asked. I'm still unsure what right a cop has to take your gun. That does not seem right. I'm also not going to give a cop permission to start pawing around in my car either. I figure if asked I'd suggest me getting out of the car and the gun staying where it is.
