After three weeks of using a new 14" 16/40 M3 Max, I must admit that this is the best notebook I have ever used, and your review is misleading. I have a direct comparison to 14" 14/30, and the thermal management is almost the same to each other. In real life, all fans are off during the vast time of your work because the chip is so powerful that your work is done sooner than it hits its limit to start cooling. Even while gaming the AA title or under heavy load, I've never got more than 5200rpms. I would definitely recommend a smaller factor of 14" and 16/40 after my experience as a perfect choice for traveling. The performance is stunning!

that makes both of us! He ignored the fact that you can over ride the thermal throttling which is done for BATTERY LIFE not because the 14 cant handle it... a power user will set the system to HIGH POWER MODE not positive the actual wording... but i do know that the DEFAULT is AUTO... Myself id keep it on high power default myself and only switch to auto or low when battery life matters. Even plugged in this thing is going to use a ton less energy than all the macs ive used the past 2 decades. I think his review IS misleading but i have a hunch the guy just got out his geek toy tester kit and never checked the fact that performance was ADJUSTABLE! Personally I've always preferred the 14, just find it more flexible and... it is a fair bit cheaper - the bigger screen, fans etc aren't free, worth mentioning that those things come with a $$ attached to them. It's also worth considering that the 14 with a cooling pad (which are very cheap), may be able to produce exactly the same performance as the 16.

The 16 inch machine should also have a longer operational lifespan too, because li-ion batteries hate excessive heat and they hate deep-discharges. The bigger machine's better heat rejection should preserve your battery capacity for longer, and the bigger capacity to start with should mean less need to deep-discharge/recharge the battery pack, also contributing to a longer lifespan.

To be fair some users do prefer size and weight over a sliver of extra performance. It’s kind of a given a smaller less expensive model might be a tiny bit slower. Apple could have a dedicated chip just for the 14” that is slightly slower but they don’t. They give us the full chip and shorter tasks will be much faster because of it. The longer tasks are still insanely fast and the only thing really impacted are bragging rights. The 14” Max in no way is a bad but. It’s a killer laptop much more capable than the 14” Pro. The entire point of a laptop is to be light and small to take with you on the road. That’s important to a lot of users that do want to balance usability vs performance. Plus not every user is editing 8k raw video or gaming on a Mac. They could be performing a lot of tasks on the go where they want more performance but don’t want to lug around a larger and heavier laptop to get more performance.

@@cguldogan well, I certainly get your points, I think that to be fair to them, they are coming from a certain perspective of pro users, who need every ounce of performance. They said that if you don’t need all the performance and portability is your main focus, go with the 14 inch. But go with the 16 inch performance is your main deciding factor.

@@Epicgamer_Mac Keep in mind that this comparison has high power mode enabled. If the power mode is set to auto, fan noise and performance may be near identical. Also, synthetic benchmarks that max out CPU and GPU only matter if your workflow has similar loads. I would buy the one you like, test it for a week, and decide if you need the extra thermal headroom.

@@yuriyfromamerica3558 That’s true, good point about high power mode. I do think the extra battery and screen size of the 16” might be worth it for me, all things considered, but I know some people (my Dad for example) who really should be going 14” this year.

I ordered the 14" binned M3 Max and can't wait to get it. Apple wasn't really promoting the 16 core M3 Max in the 14" as it was buried as an upgrade option choosing the binned Max. A better comparison would have been the binned M3 Max on both the 14 and 16. This guy pumped up the 14" when he felt a need to dump on the 15" MBA. Don't sweat it.

Definitely happy I picked the 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 Max-it's just so much more portable. The 14-inch size is already a step up from my old M1 Air, and anything bigger like my old 15.6-inch Intel MacBook Pro from 2019 just kills the portability for me. If I ever need a bigger screen, I just hook it up to an external monitor. The 14 or 13-inch models are perfect for mobility; I can easily get work done in cafes or on train rides without any hassle. I never really hit any performance limits with real-life tasks; my CPUs hardly ever max out. This 14-inch M3 Max is like a small miracle of technology-a portable laptop that packs a serious punch. Plus, I can always switch it to low power mode when I'm on the move, and it becomes as quiet and efficient as a MacBook Air. Basically, the 14-inch MBP is a transformer: it's a MacBook Air when I want cool, quiet, and long battery life, and it turns into a beastly M3 Max when I need to power through heavy tasks that would drag on forever on an Air. When you go for the 16-inch, you lose this transformer ability. It just won’t fit in your sports bag or a typical backpack. How do you even bike around the city with a 16-inch? With the 14-inch, I can always have it with me and use any 15-minute break to chip away at my projects. I bet the 16-inch owners just end up leaving it at home. And if you consider a MacBook Air, sure, it stays cool and portable, but it starts to throttle under heavy loads because it doesn’t have a fan. And then there’s the 16-inch MacBook Pro Max-much heavier, bulkier, and a pain to carry around, especially if you put it in a protective case (which you have to, if you don’t want it to break). And what are you really gaining over the 14-inch? Just a bit of extra theoretical performance? Which, in real life, hardly makes a difference. The M3 Max 14-inch remains the most versatile option. You get high power when you need it, low power when you don’t, and you can always connect to a bigger screen at home. You get the best of both worlds-a powerful device that’s still super portable. (proofread with chatgpt for reader's pleasure)
@marceln26 ай бұрын
I’ve been running the 14 inch hard with photo imports and processing for hours over the past three days, and I haven’t heard the fan kick in once. Plus, I’m getting about 9 hours of battery life on low power mode, which is incredible. For those worried about battery life while on the move, here’s a tip: just drop a power adapter or power bank into your backpack. It's still way more portable than lugging around a bigger laptop. This way, the size of your laptop doesn’t increase, but you still get all the power you need for extended use. Honestly, the 16-inch might offer a bit more battery theoretically, but if you're never going to carry it around because of its size, what's the point? That's exactly why I switched from the bulky 15.6-inch MacBook Pro to the 13.3-inch MacBook Air M1 initially. The Air was always with me because it was so easy to carry around. Now, the 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 Max offers the best of both worlds: it’s powerful enough to handle heavy tasks and still portable enough to take anywhere. It's perfect for anyone who needs the power of a Pro but wants the day-to-day convenience of an Air.

@@marceln2 i dont think this reviewer set the 14 inch on high power mode for his benchmarking. Its nice to ignore battery life and some heat if you want too for a while and have the machine not slow down much or at all... apple knew the speed of this thing would make for desktop use as well and a little fan noise or heat doesnt matter to 90% of us. Ill be using Blender and very complex After Effects projects... so ill be pushing it. Lastly he also chose codecs on purpose that apple does not have accelleration for to tax the machine. That is mostly never done in professional settings with video work... were using pro res etc etc... so the video tests were a bit weak i felt. I also know maybe 1% of us in the industry in LA or film and television work... even use anything 8k... overall this guy seems well meaning and i liked his presentation... but luckily MY research included multiple sources before i purchased.... i will not be surprised finding out the number of people pushing the 14 inch max on heavy workload tests and DONT KNOW that you need to MANUALLY OVERRIDE the auto setting to allow the 14 inch to throttle little to none.

👍Very informative, a huge thank you 👍 for this comparison using M3-max (top tier 16/40)! It follows the same pattern you identified for the M2-max (top-tier) 14" & 16" models. If you happen to have access to this laptop... I'd be very interested to see an addendum to add the ***14" M3-max (lower-tier 14/30)*** to the comparison to see if the lower CPU/GPU count would fit more neatly into the smaller thermal envelope and resolve the thermal 'bottleneck', as there is also a considerable cost difference between the 14" M3-max (14/30) and 16" M3-max (16/40). If the lower tier M3-max 14" 'fits' more neatly into it's smaller thermal envelope to enable it to fully utilise its CPU & GPU cores; then don't you think it would offer a very good value option for those who want portability (pehaps also use an external screen), don't need quite as much processing power but still need a computer for intensive tasks. 0.5kg difference in physical weight aside, the thing that I find heavier is the idea of carrying the larger 16" fully specified laptop about worth more than £4K in my bicycle pannier between meetings! 😧 Your review of the 16" M3-max (14/30) was really helpful in that respect.

Something that a lot of people don’t consider is that larger devices are more fragile due to having larger weak points and more leverage on themselves. Thermal issues have always been a given with smaller units, that’s just physics; but durability of smaller things is also higher. Worth considering if portability is important, size and weight are not the only considerations for that - if it needs to survive being portable. The bigger they are the harder they fall.
