Quan Hongchan was very young at that time, and she didn’t even know what the Olympics were about, 😅so she didn’t feel much pressure. She didn’t understand what it meant to win a gold medal.She got 466!This year in Paris, she felt the pressure, which is why she cried after winning the gold medal. She is simply amazing! Love both girls

Quan got emotional at Paris also because just like every other young athlete she went through puberty after Tokyo, grew taller and heavier, had to endure both physical and mental challenges through all trainings, her new coach Chen Ruo Lin knew what it was all about and was always there for her, really great to watch how Quan developed.

The Chinese diving national competition is probably harder than the diving competition at the Olympics.

Well, it is. Same as table tennis. Very frequently a few world champions compete for a national champion. That's very enjoyable to watch as spectators. Likewise, I've heard US Olympic swimming trial is at a higher level than the Olympics.

Bronze may seem like a minor medal but in the diving world, winning this medal is like winning a gold medal for most competitors in major global competitions. Melissa Wu finally stood on the Olympic podium after 2 close attempts. Kudos to Quan Hongchan for showing a near-perfect diving sequence and Chen Yuxi for being a strong competitor.

It's on YT. What I witnessed from the video was the high standards exhibited by quite a number of divers. For the all 10s scored in the Olympics would merit no more than a 9 there. Absolutely incredible.

I remember watching the live telecast and when Xiao Hong came out, I exclaimed "dao deng" (little girl). Little did I know the sheer spectacle I would be witnessing. I bet none of the competitors except Chen YuXi really knew then at the start, what would hit them by just the 2nd round of dives.

No, not even Chen Yuxi expects Quan to win the gold medal.

@@wongkn9050 Chen Yuxi knows very well what she was going to be up against. In the internal China selection trials, completely unknown Quan HongChan competed as a 'dark horse' (not even underdog, more like a hopeless unknown), and defeated not only Chen Yuxi but 2016 Olympics champion Ren Qian, world champion Zhang JiaQi and many other highly rated divers to win the gold and sealed her selection. She was so dominant that the commentators changed her calling from 'small dark horse' to 'big dark horse' and it was here that Zhao QiHong, the head of the diving team picked Quan over Zhang JiaQi for the other spot in the individuals, joining Chen Yuxi who was then reigning world champion. Just for Quan, her GuangDong head coach He WeiYi was given an exception and sent to Tokyo to mentor Quan. After passing Quan HongChan to Chen Roulin, He WeiYi is now head coach of the dominant GuangDong diving team. Search KZbin for the trials to see how dominant Quan HongChan was even at that time.

I watched the preliminary and semifinal rounds; I think Quan was still nervous in the preliminary round, knowing the finals were the exact quality she brought from the Chinese national diving competition. Glad, she did very well in the semifinal and final to prove her real quality.
