Haunting of the hill house(don't remember exact name but I think it was published aroun 1960s) was one of the first novel that used Human Emotions in Horror. Maybe Stephan was inspired by it.

I literally cried at the end because the things je said about depression are ao hella true and i have experienced it myself i got at a young age any nobody knew about that because I thought at the end everyone will blame everything on me and would except me to do better than ever and that exceptional pressure was so deep hurting that even if i think about it today i cry my heart out and feel depressed for days
