Jesus Bill, please just take 5 mins to make some followers that vary in sizes by a mm and you will NEVER have this issue again. Not like you don't have the gear to sort it. You have every tool on the planet but still refuse to make followers to prevent this mess. Madness
@bosnianbill6 жыл бұрын
I hear you and feel the same frustration. It isn't as easy as you suggest, however, but if I DID decide to go this route to account for manufacturer's inconsistencies, let's see what it would look like: There are three primary diameters (0.398, 0.498, and 0.550). Each have four possible "tips" (flat, hollow, half moon, and two quarter moons). Cutting a tool 1mm larger for a 5mm increment would require 20 followers FOR EACH diameter, meaning I'd have 63 followers sitting on my bench. THAT is the definition of madness. Would you prefer that I do a trial run off camera, get the picking order memorized, and practice gutting the lock a few times with the proper picks, tensioners, and gutting tools laid out, THEN record the video in 5 minutes instead of my normal 15+ minutes? This is what almost everyone ELSE does for their lock picking videos. Would you prefer that, or would you prefer to see what MOST people will experience when picking their locks for the firs time? When I make videos I intend them to be a realistic representation of what you will encounter. They aren't perfect. They aren't scripted. The locks aren't pre-picked with the binding order memorized. Picking locks in real-time isn't easy and you'll encounter all KINDS of unexpected things, especially if every lock you face is either a custom lock or from a manufacturer you rarely see.

I worked in Corrections for seven years in US Kansas. These types of locks are on basically every standard door for rooms or exterior entry or exit points. The most complicated design I have seen/used has been key code, ID card slide, high security lock like the one in the video, and electronic magnetic locking all wrapped up in one door. The most basic, some standard bailing wire wrapped around a nail that everyone refused to fix. lol Rule #1 everyone goes home is a term in law enforcement pretty much world wide. Regardless of how hell-ish and insane the day is, make sure those around you stay safe as possible or do all in your ability to make it safe regardless of threat to self. The idea is so everyone can return home to their families. Though not everyone gets to go home the way they came into work and some will only return home to be buried.

That cylinder you thought was ILCO is actually Dominion Lock Co.... it was basically Canada’s “Yale” for a long long time until (ironically) company’s like Illco started making blanks for DL locks and the company folded in the mid 80’s putting lots of people out of work. There were many court cases about who should be allowed to make blanks for who and unfortunately DL couldnt survive. Their headquarted I believe were either in Ottawa or Montreal. Very rare to see one brand new, like that with original keys. I’ll take it if one of you is sending it around!

I worked for the MDOC for thirty years and will totally agree with Mr. Appleton that rule #1 is a constant. Staff might get -uhh - hurt, but everyone goes home. Everyday, at least one supervisor stood at the the time clock with a list to make sure everyone went home. Even after we went to electronic ID cards, I had someone say goodnight. Goodnight, Bill.
@geronimo55375 жыл бұрын
seven years in the Kansas DoC or KDOC here. we also had rule #1 and it seems to be the same worldwide interesting enough. but for us, we took the rule as, we would all work together to bring everyone home even if that meant unnecessary risk to ourselves. ive seen some pretty rough scars left from officers going into the fight to pull out other officers. it might of been stupid to take such risks in the moment. but not seeing your friend taken to morgue was worth it enough.

So if anyone knows how I can send one of my custom locks to bill please let me know.
@bosnianbill4 жыл бұрын
Beave200, Sorry, man. I stopped accepting challenge locks over a year ago and posted my reasoning on YT, Twitter, LockLab.com, and other places. In case you missed it, here is what I posted: ------------------------------------------------------------- The "Challenge Lock" series has come to an end. Not only am I out of the "Whipped" PacLocks, but there were many other things that I took into consideration. 1. Cost. Every day I was receiving between 5-10 locks from around the world. I had to return most of them to the owner, which was a SIGNIFICANT expense - always more than $500/month but sometimes approaching $1000. What little I receive in viewer support was quickly consumed in return postage. I was spending several hundred dollars of my own money every month just to return locks. 2. Quality. Some locks were well designed and contained some unique innovations, but they were few and far between. Most "challenge locks" were threaded chambers with serrated pins built on old,beaten up Kwikset cores. The number of trap pins and super springs has continued to increase as copycats realized this might be a way to get a "Whipped" PacLock - meaning I was breaking and bending more expensive picks. I found this very discouraging. 3. Time. Unpacking, picking, disassembling, repacking, answering emails, etc. Each challenge lock took a lot of time to figure out and then return - even if I did not make a video of it. I was spending most of my time setting up and videoing locks that turned out to be copycats of other people's ideas - meaning I could not post the video for fear of viewers saying "WHAT? Another Kwikset with threaded chambers?" 4. Viewer Interest. My goal with LockLab was to remain "New Picker Friendly" and attract new members to LockSport, but LockLab was quickly becoming the "Challenge Lock Channel", interesting to only a limited number of people with advanced skills. Every time I posted a challenge lock video people complained and unsubscribed to the channel. New pickers were overwhelmed by the complexity of challenge locks and became discouraged. My analytics were very clear on this: If I want to lose subscribers all I needed to do was post a challenge lock video. 5. Channel growth. The LockLab's growth was stagnating and I needed to change something before it was too late. Since I stopped doing challenge locks the number of subscribers has increased, the number of comments increased, "likes" went up, and the channel has grown. So, yes. I stopped making challenge lock videos. It was not an easy decision but I could not afford to continue doing it for all of these reasons. The money saved from NOT returning challenge locks I am now spending on locks - and have been doing so for the past month or two. I cannot tell you how refreshing it is to return to picking real-world locks in a wide variety. It is good for me (mentally), as well as good for LockLab. bill

So from watching this video and seeing how hard it is to pick it because of the keyway why arnt all locks made like this? Seems like it should be an industry-standard.
@adamwest87116 жыл бұрын
4lifejeph - I think what makes it hard is that there are so many variables. If every lock had the same set-up in terms of keyway or whatever, it’d stop being a challenge because all your picks and tensioners would be designed to deal with just that one.
@johngraesser49115 жыл бұрын
The more complicated the keyway, the more complicated the broach, the tool forced through to shave the keyway open. With a really oddly shaped keyway it would take multiple broaches done one after the other. All that takes extra time. Which for a commercial operation is more cost, which gets passed on to the customer as a higher price.

Sorry Kim, I am not a licensed locksmith and cannot legally offer locksmithing services. Lastly, cutting a Medeco key requires a specialized key cutting machine (which I do not have) and the key card with the magnetic strip containing the key code. Sorry. I'd advise taking it to a local locksmith for him to drill out and replace with a brand new Medeco core.

Ben M Ideally they can be slid between the key pins & driver pins and the follower can pass smoothly through and are supposed to reduce the lock spilling its guts. The most helpful place for me is to prevent the driver pins & springs from falling in the little slit between the rear of the core & the front of the follower jamming up the lock.
