Cozeee! There's nothing like a roaring fire... and that was nothing like a roaring fire 😂 Mind you, it's a fact that I too find it difficult to start a fire, but I made a career of putting them out. To save wood, make old newspaper spills. Simply roll newspaper diagonally across the page. Then flatten the roll. It should be about 1 inch wide and 2 feet long. Fold it about 1/3 along its length, then from the other end, wrap it around the spills to meet with the folded end and tuck it in to keep it together. You can make loads from one newspaper and keep them until needed. They burn slowly, like chopped wood. Sue, does my WW have a frill? Asking for a friend. 😅 Thanks for that fly on the wall mini documentary, it was so interesting. ❤

Glad you enjoyed that change in vlog Harry. Sue used to make spills with her parents back in the day so is good at them now we remember and think about it but we don’t have newspapers. Maybe we should collect some. Well reminded there HARRY 👍🤣

On energy costs, or rather saving energy. I'm pretty sure that it is a universal thing be it house, van or boat and is also works in hot countries. We are happy when we don't need to use the air con - it happens maybe 5 to 10 nights per year. Whoever pays the bills appreciates not needing to use heating or cooling.
@NarrowEscape1

I think you are completely correct but there is something very satisfying about not using anything on a boat because it all needs planning, collecting and storing. Changing your gas bottle is a pain and they are sooooo heavy, and you can only buy them from certain places so that needs planning. Coal is bulky and dirty and takes up space and wood needs drying and storing, again all in a small space. In a house it’s press a button and it miraculously just happens…on a boat not so much. We all enjoy saving money though and not using the planets resource - on that we are all the same 👍👍

@@NarrowEscape1 Yes, I grew up sailing - family hobby. We never stayed aboard overnight, but the gas bottle was needed for tea and coffee making and yes, harder than in a house in UK. Here in Malaysia gas is in cylinders and at times I have had to go to exchange an empty one for a full one mid-cooking. The cylinders hold 14kg of LNG and weigh around that themselves, so its about 30kg full. The cylinder goes in a store at the back of the house, so it is a case of going out the back of the house, unlocking the store, disconnecting the cylinder (very simple connectors here - a single 1/2 turn of a small lever on the regulator), carry the empty cylinders through the house to the car at the front and off to find a shop that is still open. Much fun in the rain... The full cylinders are a bit of a struggle really. That reminds me, we have been on the second cylinder for a while now and Christmas is just round the corner. I'd better get the spare empty one swapped over. Merry Christmas to both of you. Tim and Jalika.

I for one,very much like your little banter back and forth, we watch you guys not just for the traveling we can get that on any Narrowboat vlog,but because you guys have wonderful personalities and you are sometimes a bit silly and often times quite funny.So things like this or your off the Tow path journeys are very enjoyable at least to me, and we get to see the othersides of English towns you normally wouldn't see. I could do without the musical ~interludes that you recentry started doing,but I am wierd that way I don't even listen to the radio in the car cuz I just love the hum and sound of the motor,and I love to hear you guys chatting or the sound of Josh's diesel but hey I am goofy I know🙋,however you really must get a chimney sweep going very soon and burn only hardwoods "No Pine" or real oily soft woods,to much of a fire risk.loved this vlog hopefully more like this to come, safe travels ✌✌

Thanks for the feedback. In many respects it’s hard to know what to do in terms of vlog composition so we tend to go with the barometer of ‘are we happy with it?’ And then just roll with it. We appreciate you giving the detail though 👍

O the carpet 😍 it's a bit like a comedy 😳 Did Sue get you to dump it in the end now be honest it's still hidden isn't it with all the wood lol. You should have swept your chimney when you stopped using it 😅 It would be lovely and clean now 1St use... That's not how you make a fire 😅😅😅😅 As long as the flames don't escape you've made fire no matter how. I remember folding news paper into knots for my grandparents to put on their fire and when lighting you'd put a page of the newspaper over the open door to the harth to draw the flamed up. Hey you've had the rain too... its hissing it down over in Brinklow too. I'd get wet kayaking for sure. Go tidy up your man cave like you said you would and then have a mug of bovril 😊 hope your cold gets better you sounded rougher than normal 😮 Walked the canal in Stratford yesterday a days holiday and we saw a kingfisher and an otter. KF was flying up and down had to zoom really high on my phone not best pics but the otter was under the bank chasing fish chewing em up and zooming about got pics of him on the opposite bank but he was quicker than a KF made our day that did. All the best kev the Brinklow kayaker

Just before you light it a damp piece of kitchen paper would clean the glass and you’d see your logs burning 😏
@NarrowEscape1

Good point although it does tend to self clean. Once the flames get up any soot on the glass goes. 👍

At least its a nice "soft" rain. Wouldn't want to do that in a heavy "chubby" rain. "Chubby" are fat rain drops coming down hard. It rained cats and dogs here the other day. I stepped in a poodle!

Hi, with regard to your fan on top of the fire, was just wondering if you find it works well. We have heard mixed reviews on them, some people say they are good and others say they don't do anything. And was it one of the expensive ones or a cheaper one. Thanks Sarah
@NarrowEscape1
@NarrowEscape1 10 ай бұрын
Hi Sarah. We can’t say it works really well because the heat doesn’t really pass past the bed but then we’ve never tried the fire without the fan. We’ll test it without and see what we think actually. It was on Josh when we got him so we don’t know what it cost but looking at the components I’d say it’s a cheaper one. I can’t see what would make an expensive one but you’ve got me curious now so popping off to have a look… 👍

😱The soot in that pipe when you exchange pot for chimney looks worryingly thick to us here 🤔 Pléáse will you two lovely people watch out for yourselves? Bad chimney maintenance does cost boats and lives. I mean I'd come and do it for you in a wiff if I wasn't living some 600km's away in another country. It is good practice to do a thorough cleanup of stove and chimney at least at the start before first relighting up and then again at the end of the season that you use the stove before it goes into general hibernation again- Please- do take care you guys 🙏🏽

Thank you for the reassurance- There are to many sad stories about tragic accidents with these things not to be careful with them. We have a woodstove in our house that I installed myself so we uderstand the joy of a warm toasty stove, and hassle as well as the risks 🍺👋🏽👋🏽

On what to call that pipe sticking out of the roof for the removal of smoke. Why not ask what viewers call it where they are? I've come across chimney, chimley, chimbley, stack, stove pipe, flue and when you were talking about it a couple of others came to mind that have disappeared again.
