Just had a titanium ferrule fitted, phoenix make them in 0.1 increments now. After a slight adjustment period I am more than pleased with the change from brass. Keep up the good work Barry, love your videos and the wisdom they provide.

We've had this sort of technology for quite some time now in the world of pool (not snooker) in the form of lightweight ferrules of different materials to reduce deflection. Low deflection shafts are all the rage now because you don't have to adjust your aim as much when playing side (english) to compensate for deflection normally which makes shooting down table a lot easier.

Very interesting. I find it rather counter intuitive that the ferrule material can have an impact when it is the actual tip making contact with the ball but facts are facts. One advantage i can think of by retaining a brass ferrule is in getting out of snookers. Also the brass version still allows you to make straight shots when you want to. All metals have what's known as an elasticity range. In layman terms that really means how much a metal can compress, bend or be stretched and still return to it's original size and shape once those forces are removed. Go even slightly past that elasticity range and permanent metal deformation starts to occur. There would be high forces involved while striking a ball since all of that striking force is concentrated over a very small area. The softer cue tip will compress and absorb some, but it's also transmitted through that tip and into the ferrule and wooden cue tip. If very high speed cameras were used it would be possible to see the tip compressing as well as some vibration and quite noticeable metal compression or deflection happening on the ferrule itself. At the macro level visualize the ferrule compressing and rebounding a bit like a coil spring. Side, top, bottom English will obviously concentrate those forces mostly to that side of the ferrule. Those effects are fairly small and obviously happen at speeds far too fast to observe by eye, but they are happening. Titanium is multiple times stronger and far more rigid when compared with the same cross sectional area of any brass alloy. Depending on the players ability's and consistency, it should be possible try various metals with different wall thicknesses and tune a cue to exactly what they prefer for how the cue ball will react. Any vibrations that are created will also transmit itself through metal literally faster than the speed of sound. But the wood type, density etc is actually a very good material to help dampen those vibrations. At the engineering level there's far more effects happening within the whole cue than it would seem simply because they cant be observed by eye. There's even some I haven't mentioned simply because I still don't know enough about the subject.

Very good information... In the pool world of the United States there is a movement towards low deflection shafts and cues. There are several differences between them and the original high deflection shafts... When I switched to the low deflection shaft it was a several months of adjustment to get my game back on track. That said I saw a big difference in my game after the adjustment... The low deflection shaft increased my cue power noticeably...and it has improved the general accuracy of center ball shots. However I am still a firm believer in "to each his own "

To be honest Barry I have been cue doctoring for 40 years, I am an engineer and easily make my own ferrules joints weights etc. I recently made my own titanium ferrule to fit my own cue but think it's a bit of a gimmick as I didn't really notice any difference on deflection but obviously as you say it should last a lifetime as rock hard compared with brass.

Robert. Not everyone likes the titanium ferrules but there does appear to be less deflection when the ferrule is made from thin material as opposed to thick material. Perhaps being an engineer you could make a couple from thick and thin material to see if there is any difference. I would be very interested in the results.

Great to see you back Barry. You're bang on with some players take to the titanium ferrule while others don't. Had one fitted by a very good cue maker who sources the titanium and machines them himself. It made my cue feel like a totally different cue. I persevered with it for about 3 months but could'nt get used to it. I did also feel that you don't get the same amount of spin on the cueball as you do with a brass ferrule. Maybe thats due to brass being heavier than titanium thus having more weight at the point of contact. However i hav'nt heard anyone mention that but there again i don't know anyone who has a titanium ferrule🤷‍♂️

Jason. I know of a couple of Pros who had their titanium ferrule taken off reverting back to brass. As I said they do not suit everyone but you only get to know if you try one.

4 out of 5 of my mates who fitted a titanium ferrule on their cue reverted back to brass, mainly not because the gameplay doesnt suit them, but because being a harder material, over repeated pounding in the long term, split the wood where the ferrule contacts the shaft wood, some beyond repair. Same issues were observed with the stainless steel ferrules back in the day. Seems like brass being a softer material, is less harsh on the shaft wood. I speculate that this might be the main reason why none has yet successfully replaced brass as the mainstream/default, more than any other reason. Would like to hear more long term reviews. How many of you had a titanium ferrule fitted for at least 6 months of frequent playing, without any harm done to the shaft wood?

Welcome back Barry, glad to see you again :) I noticed when changing my tip on my Peradon cue, that the tenon inside is off center in relation to the ferrule, so the ferrule thickness isn't equal all around (guess the cue is simply lathed down from factory after fitting the ferrule). I think that the titanium ferrule may benefit me, I learned to play on the small tables you get at Argos and you didn't really need to adjust for side because it was such a basic table. Because I spent countless hours playing on that, not having to adjust never really leaves you. I'm able to adjust these days, but deep down I think I'd rather not have to.

Ali. Generally there is less push away off the intended line when using side but don't forget other things can affect the throw, things like the robustness of the cue, the quality of the strike etc. Some players like the titanium ferrule, others do not and I know of one or two players who have had them removed because they did not like them, its a personal choice really.

Be aware that depending on the type of ferrule you currently have attaching a titanium ferrule could mean they can't use the same attachment point and have to cut the cue down and create a new section for the ferrule. I think the attachment could be based on a threaded fixing or a slip on.

Honza. Former world champion Peter Ebdon used a plastic ferrule for a long time. Other than tradition though, I don't really have an answer to your question. Snooker players generally are reluctant to try anything new or different for fear that it will affect their game.

I am more of a pool player, but I have played snooker a couple times and I am very intrigued by the game I just have some serious questions about the game and the technology that goes into it. I just am curious of why has pool technology kept evolving such as ball technology as well as cloth innovations and cue and shaft innovation? I know Snooker is a more traditional game and more refined if you will but does that mean that snooker cues will remain the same for the next 100 years? Why are snooker cues still made of the same material with no much innovation in lower deflection technology? Why are there no jump cues in snooker? John. Please do not apologise, I am sure that there are lots of snooker players without any knowledge of the game of pool. Over the years there has been lots of developments in snooker, The Strachan number 10 cloth has been refined to produce ideal playing conditions for the game and tournament professionals. The balls provided by Aramith have been produced to provide consistency when playing the variety of shots needed. The table has heaters bolted to the underneath of the slate, again with the intention of producing ideal playing conditions. On the subject of the jump cue, that particular shot was prohibited in snooker because it was thought to detract from the players skills of getting out of snookers. Snooker cues are traditionally made from Ash or Maple, other woods and materials like Rosewood, split cane, carbon fibre and aluminium have all been tried but rejected in favour of the two woods mentioned.

JAY. In my opinion the titanium ferrule being made from thin material is one of the reasons it throws off less when using side. If the steel is substantial in thickness it will probably play similar to brass.

Did have some thoughts about aTitanium ferule for some time ,all this deflection talk was not really selling it to me ,what you have said though Barry regarding side has probably made my mind up to stick with brass .I play middle of the ball always on long shots and when I can ,but use side a lot in and around the pink and black for position , I guess Titanium may not be for me , I’m playing ok at the moment and knocking in some decent big breaks in practice ,I would hate that to go south .Nice video and well explained .

John. This tends to occur when players allow the indentation in the block of chalk to become too deep, they end up not only chalking the tip but also marking the cue just below the ferrule. As for removing it my suggestion is to do it over a period of time with a damp cloth, don't try to do it in one go, be patient and you will get there.

Nick. Good question, I suppose it depends on the standard you have reached so far. It will be extremely difficult for you because youngsters tend not to have the commitments that someone your age have and are able with parent support to devote many hours on a daily basis to the game. You will need to play against good opposition regularly, get match practise and play on competition tables, I wish you well.

I was wondering, I have 3 cues, a 9 ball cue, a snooker cue and a plain pool cue, I prefer playing with the 9 ball cue, I feel most comfortable with it because it is maple wood. The ash wood pulls on my beard because I rest my chin on my cue. Is there any by laws stating what cue I am allowed to play with?

BluE. The only rule stated governing the cue is that it should be no less than 3ft (914mm) in length and that it should be the accepted shape and form. There is no mention of what material it can be made from.

Lord. Yes it does feel slightly different and also sounds slightly different. It takes a little while to get used to them and timing again is affected, having said that the general consensus of opinion is that the adapting period is brief.

JC. Good question, its not really stiffness though. The titanium ferrule is thinner and lighter so I guess that is the reason for less deflection.

Been thinking of trying one for such a long time, currently I'm out of game, thinking of starting again this winter and get a new cue, would love to have your advice if i should opt for titanium ferrule or not, I'll be adjusting to new cue anyway but will a titanium ferrule worth it? And what specs would you prefer to me, have several 50+ breaks, height 6ft+ but idk why but 58inches seems to be very long for me, every weight is right now suitable for me but my previous cue was 18.5oz, what are your cue specs sir? Ahm. At six feet tall I cannot see how 58 inches would be too long for you so I would settle for that. 18.5oz may be a little heavy so perhaps 18oz would be enough. I would also go for the titanium ferrule, lots of players are going for them now and since you are starting again after a lay off you will not really have to adapt. I am quite small so my cue is on the short side at 57 inches.

Barry I have a question for you. I recently polished my ferrule with some rough sand paper in order to get rid of a big scratch I had on it. When I rolled my cue on a snooker table it wasn't straight anymore. Do you think this is because I removed too much material from the brass ferrule or have I simply developed a warp in the shaft? Barnsey. Its doubtful that sand papering the ferrule has caused the warp in the cue, having said that using coarse sand paper is bad practise.

Hello Mr. Stark! I had a query. My current brass ferrule diameter is 9.5mm. To switch to over, do I need a titanium ferrule of the same specification; a 9.5mm one ?

Krish. The outside diameter will be the same but as I understand it the Titanium ferrules are made with slightly thinner material so the inside diameter will be slightly more. If I am correct it may be necessary to lose a little of length on your cue. May I suggest that you talk to a reputable cue manufacturer about this before you make a final decision.

I can confirm I have the new titanium ferrule . Do not like it. If you are used to reading the side on your cue,stick with it. Unless u want to start again its like a new cue.

Charles. Very true, the throw is entirely different. I know of several top players who like the titanium ferrule but one or two that don't and have it removed.

Ti is great for bicycle frames, golf shafts, and aerospace. I don't need any in my billiards.

@barryclark. You are entitled to your opinion. Perhaps you can explain why, on the same cue and tip, that top players like John Higgins and Kyren Wilson get less deflection when they change from a brass to a titanium ferrule. I would certainly be interested in you views.

@@BarryStarkSnookerCoach certainly Mr stark , if you truly believe that something will benefit you the positive thoughts will have an effect , positivity creates more positivity. The only way that a metal ferrule itself will cause deflection is if it is moving side to side shifting the tip . Not using a rubbery glue and Proper fitment is necessary. I use a SS ferrule 9.5 mm self made because it looks great . I also made my cue , extension and solid red beechwood case 59.5 inch maple 9 inch kauri extension.

Also would you agree that every individual cue tip is different, even multi laminated tips, from the same brand . Changing the behaviour of the cue . I've watched many of your utube video's usually very informative and accurate ,

Good to see you back Barry! The titanium ferrules seem to do the same thing low deflection shafts do in pool. Took me a while to adjust my aiming with a low deflection shaft but have to say I've become much more comfortable using side now.

Titanium eats into the wood of the cue and any cuemaker worth their salt would tell you not to go near them

ketan. Don't worry too much about the brand, just look for one that feels right in your hand. Look for relatively straight grain in the wood without any knots in the wood. It should be about 58 inches long, between 17oz and 19oz in weight and have between 9mm and 10mm tip. These are the dimensions that most players of any note prefer.
