145: Star Trek TOS Season 1, “The Enemy Within"

Is this the first appearance of the line "he's dead Jim"? Even though this is my first time watching TOS, it's an iconic line that stook out to me.

I would have liked for them to explain why Sulu is down on a hostile planet holding an alien dog. Is that a pet? Is it a rescue from the planet? Why is the crew there? I had the same thought, why don’t they have a shuttle craft that would be an alternative to using the transporter? I guess this points out the problem with them having shuttlecraft on earlier series that are not present on the original series but should have been. Next episode: The Man Trap is about a board game where you are building a maze to trap your opponent. In this episode the board game is made life size by a creature that could be a Q.

Regarding the issue of the landing party trapped on the surface of the planet, while I was watching the episode I kept wondering why they at some point weren't beaming DOWN survival gear, more phasers, tents, hot chocolate, etc.

They said they beamed down heaters but they duplicated and didn't work. I almost screamed "HOW BOUT FKING COATS!?"

Beam down and up a blanket a few times, and they have a huge pile of blankets.

Matt wins the logical debate here. Shawn's argument makes for a better episode. Too bad there wasn't. a plot worthy AND logical solution filmed..

The difference of opinion between you guys is simply one of fact. Was the transporter safe or not? If it is safe, beam them up. If not, then not. I can't remember the facts. Matt's other point is more lethal. Does Starfleet leadership demand that half of our personalities are evil? Is there a question on the Starfleet exam asking, "do you sometimes feel like assaulting your officers"? Was Kirk talking about himself in the last episode where he said: "You know the ugly, savage things we all keep buried, that none of us dare expose. " Part of me really loves this episode, but part of me hates it.

As far as the storyline for the upcoming Man Trap, this is obvious. Due to a time rip, Kirk's favorite movie producer from yesteryear Judd Apatow did not make a series of movies. Kirk's movie quotes from Apatow's films therefore make no sense, and the crew makes fun of him. Kirk therefore has to go back in time, discovers Apatow struck out on his first date with Leslie Mann, gives him some sexist pointers more appropriate from the 1960s but this works, and Apatow is able trap Mann into marriage and be inspired to make Kirk's fave movies. Also sorry Matt, Team Sean on the whole transporter repair thing, but I do agree on the whole shuttle business.

is it just me or when u watch the kirk and rand scene in this episode know what actually happened to grace lee whitney in real life does it make the scene even worse.

1. Holy crap, there are a lot of dumb decisions in this episode. Every time the orchestra kicked in for evil kirk all I heard was "dumb dumb dumb dumb" 2. The dog carried this episode. My wife is disappointed no one has made a plushie of it.

Also, as someone who lives where the weather hits -40 regularly, they would've been dead long ago without any shelter to contain the heat. You would have to use phasers on the whole mountainside, and even then, all the heat is lost to wind. Fun fact: -40 is where both Celsius and Fahrenheit both agree, "This sucks."
