Just what I was looking for! Scalloping or 'scooping' the neck extension! I was cringing the whole time because you didn't mask off the body to protect the finish from potential slips with the dremel...that's confidence right there! Lol! I'm gonna give my Loar this treatment! Thanks for another great video! 👌🏿😎👍🏿

Jerry asked the customer what kind of music he liked to play on his mandolin which reminded me that the only time I have ever heard a mandolin played live was in Naples Italy and the music played was Italian Folk music. :)

I have one of these and had the same truss rod problem. I’ve wanted to take it to a pro for set up, but I’m not very good at mandolin and need to justify it. Then again the better an instrument plays the more it inspires me to play.

Looks like a reasonable, friendly customer. He didn't have to promise it and shoot the video. What I *see* is a luthier that's rushing it and ripping frets out with tear-out each time. Glad he figured out how to stop the tear-out by the time he had 3 frets left. :) ***I'm guessing this guy (Jerry) is pretty good but I'm just saying it's what I see when I'm watching it.

Hey Jerry, just wondered if you’d heard of the ‘blunt chisel’ technic ? Bill carter has a video on here talking about them. I think you would find it really useful. Keep on the great work, love your channel 👍🏼 Steve.

Duck & Dovetail I looked it up and it appears that he just basically uses his chisels as scrapers. Not a bad idea.

for fun I tried a set of those GHS LS250 silk and steel you always recommend on my expensive Northfield Big Mon (2017) and although they felt great under my fingers I immediately lost all the volume and punch... sound was gone...very disappointed with those....at least on a good mando...just an experiment.. Back to EJ74 or EXP74s

@JohnnnyJohn7 жыл бұрын
Why do you scallop the fretboard tang?
@RosaStringWorks7 жыл бұрын
Johnny John it makes it easier to play by providing more pick clearance.
@mandolinic5 жыл бұрын
I've been playing for 40 years and IMHO the tang is more of a gimmick than a useful extension to the fingerboard. By the time you get that far up the fingerboard, the strings are no longer strings, but more like metal rods. They don't sound good and the intonation can be all over the place. Personally, I prefer instruments without the tang. Others may disagree.

Luthier with customer watching - my requirement: Bring along a six pack of Guinness Stout. Opinion: Customer has a $600 instrument that needs $500 of work, I would suggest they return it and buy a $1,300 Gibson.

So what size frets did you install - you said smaller than the Loar stock - why, better intonation?
