Years ago I bought a Buck 336 Paradigm Avid in 13c26. I got an H5 Gerfalcon in 14c28n by Real Steel to give Sandvik a second chance. I just don't think Sandvik steels are upgrades to AUS-6, AUS-8, and 7Cr17MoV. Definitely lower rust resistance. Sandvik gets very sharp but the latter does too. As a utility knife steel both 13c26 and 14c28n chip easily. I just felt like I was sharpening it more often due to how brittle it is. I think knife brands mark it up as an upgrade but in fact it's cheaper than the AUS and 440 Series fare.

@peterbiltknifeguy I think it is a great result for the steel. 14c28n is also pretty tough. I have a Vosteed Nightshade in Nitro V that performs about identical to 14c28n, love that knife! I also have one in Elmax and that one is phenomenal.

I have the Real Steel Bushcraft Plus, in this steel, and as you show, it takes a great edge but only holds it "fairly well", but a few passes on a strop, and it's screaming again,, Great video,, thanks, 👍🔪

You started with a more acute edge on the Watchman knife than on the Essee. It would be interesting to see how well the edge would hold up if you resharpened it to the same profile as the Essee.

Have you ever tried the Tops Mowhawk Hunter or Black Eagle Strike Team(B.E.S.T)? Also, do you try brands from overseas? Because Halfbreed is awesome.

There should be and secondary test on the working edge as opposed to the razor edge. Filleting fish is a good test of the working edge because you certainly notice when that working edge is gone on fish especially when skinning.

14c28n strikes me as a good replacement for carbon steels on bigger, heavier use knives, kitchen knives, filet knives. Takes a good edge easily, is easy to maintain, and doesn't chip or shatter easily. S35 is great- it's about a 3rd as tough with almost twice the abrasion resistance and similarly more demanding edge maintenance. I like and use both. Nice test

Tops is doing the same thing with their MSK 2 5 little scandi knives. They are fresking $90 now yet the larger Trekker is only about $10 more and has been that price sunce before inflation? The little blades are absolutely overpriced compared to their other products . These clones are great deals and they even have a 3Hm clone .....Im very tempted to get one of those too.

I’m guessing you’re 14c28n is on the soft side if you’re dealing with a floppy wire edge. I re-profiled a few Cold Steel blades today...S35vn & 4116. Then I did that wrench knife...thought I was going to be there forever on that one.
@peterbiltknifeguy8 ай бұрын
No. It wasn’t floppy. When shaping the steel felt hard. Very hard. Maybe I was just rushing
@Airik1111bibles6 ай бұрын
I have one on the way , I hope I get the right one cause some people have been getting the wrong knife model. My experience with 14C28N has be great but geometry helps....A slight convex will improve its performance. I believe the 14C28N is all made I think in Germany by croup-steel ? It was made specifically as a knife steel on the market. We shall see, ...I was HIGHLY impressed with their other Esee clone of the C2 Bird and Game knife . Its in their D53 Steel , ive never used that before but it came wicked hair popping sharp. $23 is a freaking amazing deal considering the Esee $99 price tag .

@richardhenry19698 ай бұрын
@@peterbiltknifeguy don't get me wrong I think it's a great knife for the price. I just follow a few knife channels. One sends out knives to see if the steel matches the marking then he checks hardness. I know a few brands got caught with different stuff. That even happened in America to a big name company. I believe the Rockwell really tells you more. But when you have certain super steels if the Rockwell is low then it's a waste paying for a steel that reaches 65. If your interested in what certain steels are capable of checkout Outpost76 he really put in some great work an Luvthemknives. Both have been around not sure if Outpost76 is still making videos. Most of those guys gave up. I believe they realized how much is bull an marketing. My opinion 😆.

Blade retention isn't as good as I'd expected it would be. But as you said, it's a $35.00 Knife.
@morganacanon8 ай бұрын
The Sandvik steel isn't really known for edge retention. It's a tough steel that takes abuse and easy to keep sharp. The strop is your friend there. I have a Joker Campero with that steel, and holy smokes can that thing get scary sharp. It will be put to the test on deer hide next month.....that might be a really good test of edge retention and proper edge geometry. This would be a good time of year to stock up too
@donjuanmckenzie48978 ай бұрын
That's the beauty of simple steels
@thiago.assumpcao6 ай бұрын
Edge retention depends on the mechanism of edge loss. If you use a test with abrasive material durability will be low but that's not how it works all the time. Cutting food on a wooden board has almost no contact with abrasives. The knife gets dull by mechanical fatigue and edge rolling. A high hardness, high toughness steel like 14C28N has great durability in this situation if heat treatment is done properly.

All knives get dulled, how much extra gear you wanna pack just to sharpen a knife!! 1095 or 14c28n anyday over super hard to sharpen steels. I do acknowledge super steel is fantastic stuff great edge retention, tough, mostly stain resistant. Incredible steel, just not lo g term field friendly.
