“Your problem with chronic pain is that you are too negative, think positive thoughts” this was said to me in an intake with a therapist, obviously I found someone else. I was so angry that she denied my pain.

This should be categolged under "stupid shit people say when they don't how to help and dont bother to learn what is helpful". I'm sorry you experienced that, especially when u were/are in pain already.

Omigod lol. Mine acknowledged my pain but I think she got tired of me complaining so she started saying things along the lines of “you got to just dig deep.” Meanwhile, yesterday I nearly passed out walking up my driveway. Fortunately my current therapist is much more supportive and constructive.

I decided to try a new therapist and within 30 minutes of our appointment she told me I had psychosis…. Without asking about my medication or if I was going through a medication change (which I was). I found out later I was experiencing disassociation from super high levels of stress. Never went back to that therapist and am glad to say I have a great one now

Grad school did not prepare me for the actual work as a therapist 😅 I'm still pretty new, just graduated last year. But I felt like I had no idea what I was doing, I still find myself thinking this way from time to time. My therapist told me it takes 5 years to really build your skills, but that feels too long for me! I'm trying to be patient with myself though 🙏🏾

Agreed. This is why investing in trainings on modalities is so important early on. It's the fastest way to competence outside of school.

I always thought "codependency" was when two people are mutually dependant on each other. That's just what I would assume that word means without knowing the history.

My therapist literally just listens to me cry every week about how depressed I am and her response is either awkward silence or she says “you’ll feel better in time.”
@gdtyra2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear 😞. The many therapists I've seen don't seem to know what to do with me either and I've basically accepted that I have to figure things out myself in my own way as the standard CBT stuff is not helpful. I hope things get better for you

people like that need to be supervised so that they don't cause more damage to others who are there to be supported. The world does a good job already of labeling, therapy needs to be a safe haven. I'm sorry Lou, that it was like that for you in that instance. 😔

@@christinarodriguez9067 unfortunately there isn't a lot of supervision with therapists. In most cases therapists are expected to consult with a supervisor who isn't present in session to ask questions, after licensure there really is no supervision, just a board that therapists could be reported to if a client, supervisor, or colleague discovered something worth reporting.

Commit doesn't only imply crime. When I think of the word commit, I think of commitment meaning someone has done something, is doing something, or has vowed to do it in the future.
@becky48902 жыл бұрын
Using the word in that context usually is accompanied with "to." Without that preposition, it carries the connotation of criminality. She committed to play volleyball at university. Vs She committed arson.

Agree, also "completed" sounds like a positive accomplishment so I'm not a fan of that alternative

I love my therapist, but he doesn't really help me with my adhd that much. He tells me to try a new system (for example a planner or something) and to report it to him next time. Because the only way i can do such things is with the pressure of the disappointment. But then he forgets it the next time and i oc forgot it too. Has happened several times
