Louisville had a very successful ABA team- the Kentucky Colonels-had better attendance (and a better team) than many NBA teams at the time St. Louis Spirits were in the ABA Buffalo had an NBA team (now the Clippers) Pittsburg had an ABA team (the Pipers-Connie Hawkins played for them) though it wasn't supported

The Bullets moved because Baltimore was very sketchy and it was dangerous to be in that area. Today, it's still a little sketchy. Baltimore has a ton of NBA fans and I think a team there would do well. Baltimore, San Diego, Seattle, and St. Louis all deserve teams, though St. Louis is in the total NCAA basketball area.

It wasn't actually a minor league team. The ABA was an upstart rival for the NBA in the way that the AFL were rivals with the NFL. The Pittsburgh Pipers were the first ABA champions. They actually had a strong attendance level for the ABA average, but team owner Gabe Rubin was losing a ton of money and he sold the team to a group that wanted to move them to Minneapolis... They eventually moved back here and renamed the team the Condors, but the trust was broken and no one came to the games... That was 50 years ago, though. Surely we've earned another crack at it.

I really think Louisville should get an NBA team, along with Seattle. Louisville and Kentucky are consistently two of the most profitable NCAA basketball schools, with Louisville routinely being the biggest media market in all of college basketball, and you could bet money that viewership would increase for the NBA. Kentucky has more people than Louisiana, and Louisville has more people than New Orleans, that should be the argument right there, if New Orleans can have an NBA team, why not Louisville? Also Louisville has an expensive NBA tier arena they built a few years ago right now only being used by a college team. If there is any NBA expansion in the near future, the league should really think about the Derby City, along with Seattle for possible locations.

Louisville and Kentucky is just about all people care about here. Also, since we have never had an NBA team, most people here are just random fans, I'm a Bucks fan for example and I have friends that are fans ranging from the heat to the pacers. I would love it if we could have a pro sports team here but I just don't see it happening.

Devin - You're right about Louisville and that it'll always be college first. But Memphis and OKC had adapted to handle college and NBA well. Louisville would do the same. I'm a Nuggets fan. That's just as random. If we do get a franchise, a lot of fans would go to see the visiting team and players because our team would likely suck early on. It would probably take a couple years to develop a fan base. Which wouldn't be too bad I don't think. I don't remember, but I'm sure Memphis and OKC were in a similar boat before they got their teams.

Great video, there is major talk of the Montreal Expos returning soon. I would definitely love for Hartford, CT to return to sports. Baltimore needs a new arena before they get a new team. San Diego definitely need another team. Though it's far and away, there is also strong talk of a Seattle Supersonics as well they now have a new NHL special franchise. Portland is definitely in talks to get another team.

It was before your 22 years- but Louisville had a top notch professional sports team in the 1970s- the Kentucky Colonels of the ABA who regularly put 12,000-16,000 fans in Freedom Hall. Three of their players: Dan Issel, Artis Gilmore and Louie Dampier are all in the Hall of Fame. When the leagues merged in 1976, the Colonels had the 6th best attendance in all of pro basketball- NBA and ABA- it only dropped from the top 3 because John Y Brown traded favorite son Dan Issel a few months after the Colonels won the ABA championship in 1975. The Colonels played that last season (75-76) without Issel (Maurice Lucas was brought in to play power forward) and that hurt attendance. The man behind the push for an NBA team for Louisville- J. Bruce Miller (Louisville City Attorney and Issel's agent) wrote a book about Louisville and the NBA, its called "Airball"- its an interesting read.

I wish that one or two teams to have the NBA teams in Alberta, Canada. Calgary and/or Edmonton are looking for the NBA team. Alberta is the only border that borders Montana in the USA and Canada. Montana is now a fairly fastest growing state between 2010 and 2030, so people from Montana can see the NBA team in Calgary, the third largest city in Canada, behind Toronto and Montreal. At least people from Montana will have to travel about 200 to 300 miles to go to the NBA game instead of 1,000 or more miles to go to the nearest NBA game arena.
