I would like to offer a caveat for digital products. Especially on invitations, cards, and party products. Be aware of copyrights. I used to work at a print shop and often several times a DAY, we would have to inform customers that we could not print their Etsy purchases without a copyright release. Sellers often give incorrect information that a print shop could produce them because the designer made a derivative work, or something similar. Any reproduction of a character, or other protected element, has to be approved by the copyright holder. This can include fonts as well.
@KateHayes3 жыл бұрын
Definitely need to check copyright first and also make sure you have a commercial license for any elements you might have bought and be using! :)

Does that mean I need to add the copyright commercial license with the digital print?

Hello Kate, thank you very much for this video. I want to ask you about copy rights for photos and paintings. I learned from other creators (artists and photographers) that their digital products were stolen and resold on other platforms. This is a common practice with digital products and for this reason, most of creators sell only physical products. How do I protect my work from being stolen? This is a huge problem in the internet and the main reason why I did not upload my digital products on etsy yet. Do you have any video about that?
@Prettykitty1112 жыл бұрын
Hey there I can probably answer that as I am a digital artist and run two Etsy shops. The first thing I suggest is if they are your original works , file to get them copyrighted. It will cost a bit of money and you won’t need to do it right away, because normally shops get stolen from as they reach a certain level of sales and popularity. The second thing I suggest is going on google and finding a cease and desist letter template OR paying someone on Fiverr $15-30 to create you a custom cease and desist letter to send to people stealing your stuff and give them 3 or 5 days to remove it. Lastly, Etsy does allow you to file a copyright claim and they person stealing your stuff will immediately have it taken down. This helps too if you have your stuff copyrighted because Etsy does allow you to enter in your copyright serial number to even further prove that you are the original owner. I’ve gone through having my digital products purchased and resold in other Etsy shops and this is all stuff I’ve done to help me so hopefully it can help you 💌

those 15 products ideas are oversaturated markets already with hundreds of offers with same design/font/vibe and lack of creativity and originality. I'm a freelance illustrator and I can't believe you didn't mention digital linework, coloring books, brushes for artists just more artistic paths. I got something out ot this video, on the 15 ideas you mentionned I took notes for 2/3 that I can implement in my store, Cliparts, digital stickers and maybe calendar but the others imo are just business offers for businesses and I think it's totally saturated and pretty hard to stand out in those. Just the font and layout/mockups market is packed and they all look the same with that calligraphy lettering and muted/zen aesthetic.

Would you say you could use Etsy as a website for your online business products instead of a traditional website? Or good to have both?
@mizcreativelyme3 жыл бұрын
🍃🌸 If I may offer my perspective, I’d recommend both. The more visibility your brand has gives you more opportunities to reach your sales goals. Yet both have pros and cons. With your own website, if you don’t have an existing audience ready to buy from you then that will take some time to build (an email list, social media influence, etc.) … not necessarily a bad thing but will take some time and will be worth it down the road if you stick with it. Whereas with Etsy, it’s an established brand/marketplace that people are already on searching for things to buy. The biggest con I’ve found with Etsy is that a store can be suspended or shut down without notice/reason and it can be challenging to get in touch with someone to resolve the issue. Perhaps rare but it can happen. With your own website you have more control over back end operations. Recommend choosing an eCommerce platform with great customer service. Best to read all the fine print with regards to opening an Etsy shop. Best wishes to you 🌸🍃

Both because sometimes Etsy suspends accounts and what if they do maintenance work on their site or they close your account all together? Just have a backup

In what format do we have to have our digital products? I do photography and I paint in watercolor. What files do they have to be if they have to be printable also as posters? How much pixels do they need to have? Can you tell me where to find more information about that?
@KateHayes3 жыл бұрын
Hey friend! As a rule of thumb, digital files should be at least 300dpi. You can offer them as a JPEG, PNG, or PDF. PDF is generally better quality but also a larger file size so if the size exceeds the limit allowed on Etsy, you may have to email it to your customer. PNG is great for anything that requires a transparent background. Photos are generally good as a JPG but just check to make sure the resolution is at least 300dpi for the size you want to offer. You can always offer both PDF and JPG to your customer so they can choose which type they want to use.
@nickis.artworld95573 жыл бұрын
@Kate Hayes Thank you so much for your answer. Where do I edit my pictures in 300dpi files? In Lightroom? Are these steps correct for editing my pictures? 1. I take my water color painting with a camera as a raw file. 2. I put the raw file in Light Room, edit the colors and then I edit it as a 300dpi file. 3. I export the pixture as a jpg file. 4. I put the file on etsy. Looking forward to your comments.

I have heard that Etsy community suddenly suspend sellers account?? Is it true?? 💔
@KateHayes3 жыл бұрын
I’ve had no personal experience with this but I do know Etsy suspends shops who violate their policies. I recommend reading through the policies in the seller handbook to ensure you won’t have to deal with this :)

You have to pay etsy for keeping your products online there?
@KateHayes2 жыл бұрын
The only thing you pay are the fees that come out of each sale/ renewing listings :)

Can international students in canada are eligible to start this business on etsy?

Yes. You need a checking account or credit card. Other payment methods for your home country are accepted.

How do I learn to make these?

Choose which specific products you want to hone in on and look up tutorials for those specific products on KZbin. So much great info for self-teaching on KZbin :)

Aren't the merchant fees on Etsy pretty high? I've seen a lot of these video about how allegedly lucrative having an Etsy store can be, but rarely hear what the business expenses are for running it. Thanks! :)

Hey Tabitha! There are fees associated with any marketplace platform. I personally don’t mind Etsy’s fees as I just account for them when deciding on my price point. The fees are clearly laid out in the Etsy seller handbook if you’re wanting to know details about the amounts, etc! :)
