Very Nice Display ps.. 10:41 - KGL Battalion was hit south of the Ohain Road, and though they *lost* much of their battalion in this incident, they weren't 93% casualties - its actual total official casualties and missing was 150 men, around 30% of their battalion. 13:00 - The Brunswick Legion actually fought on the front line very early in the battle. When one of the British Foot Guards brigades went to reinforce Hougoumont at the beginning of the battle, the Brunswick Legion was moved up around the vacated position. Later in the day, much of the Legion went to support Hougoumont directly or adjacent to the position. In the evening hours they were shifted to the center near the Hanoverians and Nassau brigades; at least some of them arrived in time to take part in the action against the Imperial Guard attack. This is from their official battle reports. 16:20 - 'Knee'sh'

However in the 1970 film "Battle of Waterloo" the Duke was shown in the middle of one square. Yep never a threat from French artillery cos the squares were out of their range over a small hill. Wellington ordered his soldiers to move back one meters over the hill so as to make squares. Marshal Ney thought the British were retreated and he and his cavalry charged over the hill only to find the British stood still in their squares. It was a fatal mistake cos it leads to a defeat for Napoleon's army, losing too many cavalry trying to break the square off. It was not Napoleon who ordered the cavalry charge. His real order was for him to stay still but Ney disobeyed the order cos he thought the British were losing.
@BaronsHistoryTimes
@BaronsHistoryTimes 2 жыл бұрын
Wellington's deployment of his British, German, Belgian and Dutch troops behind the ridge line along the Ohain Road is what kept his army from losing the battle. His agreement with the Prussians was to hold his position until they could arrive to attack the French in their flank and rear. That was the pre-arranged plan. Without that reverse slope tactic, Wellington's army would have been slaughtered by the devastating French artillery which bombarded from long range, and blasted with canister on the front line too. It saved many soldiers lives. Exposing formations to cannonades = a slaughter, which is what Wellington warned the Prussians about prior to the earlier battle of Ligny. Those are actual facts you can read in the accounts of soldiers of all nationalities; there were as many non-British German/ Dutch/Belgian /Nassau squares as there were British, deployed with more protection on the reverse slope. Tanks use the same principle of HULL-down, only exposing their turrets when fighting defensively if on higher terrain.

This put a smile on my face. Great job chaps! But with all due respect to Wellingtons multi-national army, people regard Waterloo as a ‘British victory over the French’ because it was a British victory over the French! The British troops (including the British trained and equipped KGL) were the best troops under Wellington’s command. They were deployed to all of the key points during the battle, and the battle would not have been won without them. Whereas, the Prince of Orange was an imbecile, and unfortunately most of his Dutch troops were second rate. Also, Napoleon had Swiss, Dutch-Belgian, and Poles in his army. However, you very rarely hear about them, and no one ever argues that Napoleons victories were not really French victories because they were won by a multinational continental European army!
@DavBlc7
@DavBlc7 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it was a victory but in fact they nearly lost the battle until Blucher and his Prussian army came in behind the French and attacked them, causing the French to flee in panic. Wellington plan was to hold the French off until Blucher arrive and it was late afternoon when they arrived. It was really British-Prussian-Dutch victory. The Prussians had more troops than the British have.
@malpreece5008
@malpreece5008 3 жыл бұрын
@@DavBlc7 That's a fair point about the Prussians. What was it that Wellington said: "Give me Blucher...or give me night"? Without the Prussian Army the battle could not have been won, but then again without the Prussians Wellington's strategy would have been totally different and there most likely wouldn't have been a Waterloo. That said, it was principally the British that held their ground all day at Waterloo and did the lions share of the fighting, without that the Prussians would have been trounced by the French as they were at the battle of Ligny. The Prussians had more troops than the French at Ligny, but it didn't do them any good. Whereas, the Anglo-Allied force under Wellington was outnumbered - until the Prussians arrived - at Waterloo, but they still managed to hold. That's British testicular-fortitude for you! ;-)
@BaronsHistoryTimes
@BaronsHistoryTimes 2 жыл бұрын
Prince of Orange made several costly mistakes in the campaign, but in fact, he actually did several actions that helped win the campaign. 1) On June 15th, he did not force his Netherlands army generals to obey Wellington's orders for Perponcher's Division to regroup at the town of Nivelles, which would have left the Quatre-Bras crossroads undefended for French capture; instead he listened to his veteran staff commanders and realized the crossroads needed to be defended at all costs. 2) He was very very busy riding along the front line in the large area between Hougoumont and Bylandt's Division - rallying the wavering Dutch /Belgian / Nassau and German battalions which were getting pulverized for hours. Some of these largely inexperienced formations should have broken entirely, but the veteran officers of all nationalities, including the Prince of Orange ( a vet of the Peninsular War) somehow kept the thinning front line from breaking. 3) Not a 'big moment', but there was one instance in the Battle, I think closer to Hougoumont, where a junior officer asked the Prince for permission to move forward with a company if I recall, but the Prince advised against it, citing the threat of a potential ambush. An interesting selection of books show how much fighting the often unnoticed other nationalities contributed to the battle; Gareth Glover's 'Waterloo Archives' series, and Erwin Muilwijk's series on the United Kingdom of Netherlands Army during the 1815;Hundred Days'. Without each other all along the front line standing firm > those that did, the battle result would have changed.

Great display, Gary (and fellow collaborators)! Thanks for the shout-out and I enjoyed the close-up of my cavalry contribution at the 15:30 mark. Excellent interview BTB. Good questions and Gary you did a great job presenting the MOC.
