My little boy was named Sambuca. He wAs the best, most funny, smart, and understanding dog I have ever had. I could tell him “mommy is not feeling well and he seemed to understand. I lost my Dudley in November after 14-1/2 yes. I still cry every morning and night. I have convinced myself that he is playing with my other dogs over the Rainbow Bridge and he is happy. My first Shih Tzu was with us for 18 yrs. Best dog I'd ever had & have had many different breeds. We were bereft when he passed. The only thing that could console us was a new puppy. Shih Tzu of course!! An absolutely adorable liver, chocolate haired. Tied for first place with my first boy. Both were exceptional easy to house train. The best dogs EVER!!!

I had the most wonderful experience with my sweet baby girl, Desireé for the past 15 years. Sadly, she passed away a month ago and I am heartbroken and miss her dearly. She had an incredible personality, was very, very stubborn, and was spoiled rotten. I did a lot of research before I chose this breed! Best companion and this video was spot on, except I had no issues with potty training outdoors. If you are thinking about getting a Shih Tzu, that are so worth it and will bring you a lot of joy and happiness! I plan to own another one someday.

We are on our second female Shihtzu and this video was pretty spot on! Our girl Coco is now 12 and she is a registered EMS dog. She is just as happy cuddling on the couch as she is going to work with me or my mom. She is however very protective over me out of all of our family members. She is always on alert when I am around but is much more laid back when I am taken out of the equation. She is awesome with my kids and has grown up with my youngest son and has never even so much as lifted her lip at either of the boys. She also is great with our 3 cats and will play and chase once in a while but For the most part they live in harmony. She has always has spite “accidents” and will literally have an accident when I go to work without her. She is stubborn but will normally listen to my command over wondering. All in all happy! I will say that she has had many health issues including Ear infections, allergies to food, and requires daily allergy medication, a special food that is by prescription only that is expensive and many vet visits. We do it all because we love her and when we committed to her we committed to all that came with her.

My Shih Tzu,TASHA, IS 1 YR. old. Love love LOVE the breed! They are stubborn & challenging to potty train, but the love & companionship they offer by far out-weigh the challenges! They're worth every bit of work you put into them. I brush AND comb her every day. Also, keeping her eyes clean, as they tend to water a little. A wet wipe or warm washcloth does the trick nicely.. It also helps keep allergies down & wipe the little feet too before bedtime. They're the best dogs ever! ♥️😋🐶♥️

Oh my gosh yes! My little shih tzu is 8 months old and STILL pees in the house I cannot for the life of me train her to pee outside i take her outside every morning and throughout the day but as soon as she goes outside she just sits and stares at me and then as soon as we get inside she pees! I’ve tried treats I’ve tried puppy pads i even punish her every time she goes inside and nothing has worked I’m at my wits end because I can’t break this little habit of hers, any tips??

I have 3 male Shih-tzus! My first got separation anxiety when we were working. He really needed another companion. We got a third and the first wouldn't have anything to do with him for 2 years because he was so jealous. Now they are best friends as the other one is getting old and doesn't interact as much. They have brought daily joy to our family!

gizmo was my family dog since i was 5. he was a true member of the family. he lived to be 15 years old. he was cuddly, smart (knew tons of tricks), protective over us, would stare at you with big eyes for table food, and was there for all of us always. sadly, he became sick back in June due to kidney failure. he had lived a long life, and it would have been cruel to put him through dialysis constantly. so we had to make the hardest decision to let him cross the rainbow bridge. i miss him barking in excitement whenever we come through the door, and him trotting along right beside us. he wouldn’t even let us go to the bathroom alone. miss my little mo mo.

I had a shih tzu for 13 years and 4 months. Her name was Angel and she was my heart. She was the sweetest, smartest, affectionate, funny, spunky and caring pup. She passed away January of this year. That loss was such a heartbreak. I’m still dealing with the grief. She was truly a highlight of my life and I know she’s playing in heaven cause all dogs go to heaven. ❤️ I love the shih tzu breed and would definitely consider getting another one in the future. I always recommend the breed to others who want a lap dog.

So very sorry you lost your Angel. It's heartbreaking - dogs simply don't live long enough. I lost my Bean and though I was "prepared." As if that were ever possible! Like you when you lost your Angel, I was grief-stricken when I lost my girl to heart failure. How could a heart that pure ever fail? You sound like a marvelous, loving owner, and when you're ready, perhaps you'll open your heart to another smooshy-faced friend? I didn't think I'd be able to; it felt like it might be a betrayal to my first girl 😢 It was SO the right thing to do. My first girl was a retired breeding dog; I was able to contact a larger shih tzu breeder to adopt a pair of adult retired breeding sisters. OMG they are little HAMS! They healed my heart in the most profound way - I share this story in the hopes that you'll be reassured that your ❤️ will heal, too. Your Angel would want that - for another dog you may one day love, but also for you ❤️ wishing you the best.

Leo is my sweetheart’s name….my pandemic pup has brought so much joy and laughter. He is my ride or die for real! Is a complete homebody and is content sitting in my lap for hours. I have never had a housebreaking problem…consistency is key. He either rings the potty bell or taps me when he needs to go out. So smart and sweet.

Shih tzu are the most sensitive dogs with allergies wether it’s their skin their food almost everything bothers them so keep in mind those vet bills and yes I totally agree their upkeep is crazy when I got my little bella it was like I got a brand new baby She gets about 75% of my time and attention groom her every day clip nails every month she expects a walk every day there is no such thing as sleeping in anymore she’s crying and scratching every morning at 7 am ready to start the day she expects to be played with all day and lots of treats these dogs are beautiful but definitely a COMMITMENT that i think is worth every headache ❤️

I heard that after the Empress died and China was invaded, those taking over had the dogs exterminated. They didn't just die off due to lack of breeding programs. Luckily, some had been smuggled out of the country or had been given as a gift and those that were, were used as breeding stock to replenish the supply so they did not become extinct.

Barkley was a dream to toilet train. I had a Boxer before him and that guy only was borderline housetrained Absolutely follow crate training, never ever yell, hit or stick their face in it!!!! If you catch them in the act.... Outside immediately with lots of praise following the end. Biggest thing is to have them set to a schedule. Alarms every hr when they're babies, but as they grow, they will let you know!😘

I love reading all of these comments! I have had many shitzus’ and I would NEVER consider any other breed. I do love all animals but it’s those babies with gremlin faces that have my heart❤️ I lost my husband to Covid almost 2 yrs ago. Months later I lost my little Tai. I trust believe that as my heart was broken, so was Tai’s. We both adored my husband. Tai was also over 13 and I’m sure his age played a part of his 💔 heartbreak. I’m emotionally ready to love and take care of a new puppy born somewhere on this earth, however I am having so much difficulty finding a puppy who comes from a reputable breeder. I know a lot about the breed, as my close friend was a Westminster champion many times with her kids. I’m not looking to breed, however I know the positive personality traits of the breed as they age ! And I know many people only breed for the financial end. I live in south Florida. My close friend moved to Georgia and she doesn’t know any accredited shih tzu breeders anywhere in the south. She is currently breeding long haired dachshunds. I would be eternally grateful if someone was able to help me out finding the right puppy. I would be willing to travel to pick up the little one (within reason). My email address is: [e-mail]. While assisting an elderly widow, I discovered why I was constantly taking his Shih Tzu to the vet, as she was always having bouts with diarrhea... Then I watched him give her two or three big pieces of Chicken Jerky everyday... They were the same jerky brand "Made in China" that Vets and regular dog owners turned investigators, figured out was killing dogs all over the U.S... When shopping for him, I had to look for a brand NOT "Made in China," which was difficult because most of the time, only the import company's name was listed on the package... I am praying to the goof lord I can out live my Billy boy. Of all the babies I've had he is definitely the most adorable lovable one can't imagine unless they have owned one. He us now blind . I was told he would be by the vet .He was a rescue at 8 weeks. I am I'll now ,he has never been sick at 12. He's slowing down . But as long as he can be by me he's happy . The reason I want to out live him and a darling maltese also rescue. I want to take their remains with me . I need prayers so I can stay alive for this purpose. My maltese had never known love . But here she is shown what love means. God bless you all.

Our Shihtzu is definitely stubborn! He doesn’t like being left alone but notice at other times he’s off by himself. When we are having a conversation he just looks at you like he’s listening, I have to laugh at times. Not a good eater. He wants what we are eating and will avoid his food until he finally gets hungry, part of the stubborn trait. We still love him regardless

Love my sweet baby…I rescued her. She was 7 and loss her master, trained, she is now 11.. She is temperamental at times, not bad…yes, I have spoiled her especially during the pandemic; does have allergies. I feel She wants to talk, however comes to whining and barking, at times. She is intelligent. She is shih-Zhu with small terrier she was sent to me at a time when I was experiencing a loss. I have wondered what their life span is. I had another breed and she lived 4 years past her life span, vet told me was due to all the love, well-being given to her, she too was a rescue. Has a precious face and expression in her eyes, I believe she is going blind. Yes, I love dogs, if I was to get another one, the same.

Thanks for the information. I just recently got a Shih Tzu. He was taken from his mom at 5 weeks old. I had no idea this is illegal in the state I live in. This has him very clingy to me. He's really a sweetheart loving and very affectionate. He's a little reluctant in interacting with other dogs. I decided to wait until he's fully vaccinated to work on him socializing. My baby is super smart I had him potty trained at 6 weeks. He's fully trained to the potty pads. I named him Blu because he has one blue eye. I'm considering getting him a play mate. Another male Shih Tzu. Do you think it's a good idea?

Hi Joanne. I had 2 Shitzu. 1 male and female 1-1/2 years apart. In my opinion having 2 is great. My male was the Alpha dog and my female followed him EVERYWHERE. I would wait to get the second one especially cause he will be able to help you train the next. They tend to be extremely stubborn so your undivided attention to train the Alpha might pay off in the long run with the 2nd. My female copied everything from her big brother. Good luck whichever you decide. Shitzus are the best!!! Especially love bugs

It is good to talk to your Shih Tzu. Describe what you are doing and if you are going out or going to bathe, etc. such as, 'we're going bye bye' or 'we're going for a walk.' I used to read stories to my Shih Tzu when I first got her. She got acquainted with my words and voice that way. We would do things together. I would brush my hair and she would watch. Then I would brush her hair. I would cut my nails, then do hers. I would go pee, then I'd take her outside to go pee. She would want to wait to eat with me instead of eating without me (I didn't teach her that). They enjoy a routine. My latest Shih Tzu (surrender dog aged 8.5 years) gets variety when we go out walking, not always the same place. This keeps her from getting bored and gives her great enjoyment smelling new scents.

I had 11 shih thus they all lived 16/ 17 years , but I had them indoor , summer air conditioning. they are not snow dogs , they were happy indoors running around the rooms 2/3 times , I never trained them , they are not circus dogs if I said come over here, if they felt like they did , if not they came to me when they liked , never yelled at them , they were my babies, I capt puppy clip

A laser pointer is a great way to exercise your dog if immobile.. Another good option is a stuffed toy for playing tug-o-war that's long enough so you don't need to bend over, even a small blanket works If you don't like brushing, don't get a Shih Tzu, I believe Shih Tzu form strong bonds because they literally can't survive without grooming.

Missy,my sweet rescued Shih Tzu did not have a happy life. She is a spoiled very loved princess who loves her toys now that I am her Mommy. She go out and she also has a pee pad. She is now safe and she understands that I want her to be happy. She is bossy about meal time.
