The Why Files

Күн бұрын

Did you know there are more ways to shuffle a deck of cards than there are atoms in the universe? Seems crazy, but it's true. Today The Why Files covers amazing math facts (and tricks) that will convince your friends you have super powers.
Math is everywhere. It’s the source code of the universe. Most of the time math makes perfect sense. But sometimes math just gets…. weird.
These math facts that will blow your mind. You'll learn about the Birthday Paradox, secrets of Pi, how to create numeric palindromes with your mind, and our favorite: the mysteries of the number nine.
How many people do you need to get together before you find two that have the same birthday? Here's a hint: not that many.
How quickly can you calculate 1,111,111 squared? We'll show you how to solve this in 5 seconds. You won't believe the answer when you see it.
And nines? Nines have a whole thing going on. Multiplying by nines = magic. Squaring nines = pure sorcery!

When I was in elementary school my teacher showed me a really neat trick for multiplying single digits by 9: hold out both hands in front of you with all your fingers visible. Think of what single digit number you want to multiply by 9; going left to right, use your fingers to count what that number is, and when you get to that number bend The joint of that finger and fold it down. The number of fingers you have to the left of that folded finger is the tens place and all the fingers to the right of that folded finger are the one's place. For example, if you wanted to multiply 3 x 9, you would put down your third finger and have two on the left side and seven on the right side = 27. That trick works with any single digit number multiplied by 9. Great to know if you have a kiddo in school

If someone with all ten fingers was to hold their hands out in front of them and bend which number finger, the remaining fingers give you the answer. Times two would look like IiIII IIIII. 10! seconds in 6 weeks is a pretty cool coincidence, and not too hard to verify in your head. Of the 9 numbers from 2 to 10 being multiplied (we can ignore the 1), the 6 is covered by 6 weeks, and the 7 by 7 days in a week. The 3 and 8 are covered by 24 hours in a day, and then it just remains to figure out if the remaining 5 numbers multiply out to the number of seconds in an hour, which they do: 2*4*5*9*10 = 60*60 = 3600.

Also what's cool about the number 9- a transposition error, in data entry such as banking, is caused by inadvertently switching two adjacent numbers. A clue to the presence of such an error is that the amount of the error is always evenly divisible by 9.

I noticed that too. But then, if I figured it correctly, it takes only another 7 folds to get from .1mm to 10mm. So you'd only have to add 7 folds to each of his answers (starting with a .1mm thickness). Assuming the results given are close to correct, the concept of still only having to fold a little over a hundred times to get larger than the universe boggles my brain.

The googolplex analogy to the weight of the earth is hopelessly understated. There are ~ 10^79 atoms in the observable universe. This is 21 orders of magnitude less than a googol. So, if you could represent 1s and 0s with single atoms, you would run out of atoms long before you got to that final 0. You'd need 10^21 times as many atoms as in the visible universe.

My oldest daughter could not grasp fractions, struggled bad. I was a carpenter at the time, I pulled out my tape measure, showed her the 1/16 mark, 1/8 mark, 3/16 mark etc etc, almost INSTANTLY her math did a 180. And a teacher could not show this??

I've seen my daughter's math homework and I think they intentionally try to make math more difficult than it ought to be. She was showing me her pseudo-algebra stuff and I was like, "Easy. Solve for X." I started teaching how to do it and she and my wife said that no, she HAS to do it the way they want her to. It's bonkers. Deliberate dumbing down of education, I think.

I like the one where you get a group of people to guess how many marbles (or whatever you have on hand in an identical large quantity) are in a glass jar. You take the guesses and average them out. The answer will be so close if not spot on the the actual number of items in the jar. Blows my mind. I saw this on a show by a mathematician talking about quantum physics. Great stuff 👍🏼

My great aunt worked in an accounting office. She once showed me a training handbook with all kinds of math tricks. I don’t remember the exact details, but one that always stuck in my head was that if an error was detected of a certain amount, the problem was probably inverting two digits. I think it was if the error ended with a 9.

The first bit about a deck of 52 shuffled cards (and what AJ says) perfectly illustrates why my mind is so blown over something that happened many years ago for me...but I was using a deck of 86 cards... I cut and shuffled the deck many times and received one particular card... I did many cuts and shuffles, each time making sure the card was completely lost in the deck, and again...same card! This happened a total of 7 times in a row and I couldn't believe it. 😳 My calculations wanted to tell me that the odds of that happening were over 34 trillion-to-one, and to make matters more wild, the card wasn't upside-down, it was right-side up every time. It was one of the craziest and most improbable things that I've ever witnessed (and yes, these were special Tarot cards) 😋
