I'm super late to this, but everyone in my family has super sensitive smell. I used to be able to tell my friend's scents simply by being near them. When you have a good nose it's easy to pick up on the little things. It's even easier if you're familiar with their shampoo or hair products. Like I had a friend that always used Rose products and another that always used baby powder. So knowing their scent would be easy. My best friend used Vanilla deodorant when we were in 8th grade. Every time I smell it now I immediately think of her, even though she hasn't used it in a little under 10 years.
