Well it's a pawn shop. they need to make money, In an auction you lose more since you pay all the feeds. However I agree that 24,000 is practically stealing from a 40,000 value item.. Maybe 33,000 would of been better however the point of pawn shops is that desperate people need cash quick and so they usually get robbed there. Honestly if I was selling something that is 40,000 of value then I would spend time putting ads or tracking down buyers or collectors, go to auction, and car/gun/shows and make contacts, It will take a few months but eventually you will get offers and when multiple buyers want it in their collection of cool stuff then you can always haggle prices and you maybe get way more then 40,000$ when you hold all the cards.

Yes it would take some boot leg work and time but can be done. Things used to be exclusive back in the day where you'd need brokers/dealers/agents/whatever the term for any industry - not so any more, there's forums out there on anything and everything and all have buy/sell sections. Every industry is cutting out the middle men. Buyers are incentivised to cut out middle men too because they save money. The middleman was a valuable service back in pre internet times but they are not relevant anymore.

The 1921 piece dollars were all high relief. I have two in my own collection. The high relief was a bit harder to do but that was not why the mint stopped the high relief in 1921. They would not stack at the banks properly or anywhere for that matter ,everybody complained. A few 1922 high relief were minted thus making this coin so rare and valuable. Similarly, the Steel cents of WW2 minted 1943 were minted because copper was needed for the war effort. Most folks hated them and tossed them in a drawer and forgot about them. Thus so many were saved they are not worth much. I have 3 in my collection, one from Philadelphia mint, San Francisco mint, and one from Denver mint. However a few, by mistake, 1944 steel cents were minted and extremely rare and valuable.
