We visited Bologna in the early '90's for a wedding between our cousin and his new wife. The wife is from Bologna and her father was the professor of mathematics at the University of Bologna. In Europe, there is only one professor for each department, with other faculty with titles like lecturer. Bologna is also known as the food capital of Italy, think of Spaghetti Bolognese.

Eurocentric people should learn that the oldest universities are in Indian subcontinent - Taxila and Nalanda (real universities with professors, adminissions, lectures, exams, graduation, research, etc., since 500 BCE; students from across the known world studied there).

What is your problem? He can't name all of them. The one in Mexico is no more special than any other.

Is it old enough to be in the top 15? I have no clue, hence the reason I ask.

He could have included the National University of San Marcos in Lima, which is a little older than the Autonomous University in Mexico, and the University of San Tomas in Santo Domingo, which began as a Dominican studium generale before either of the others. The latter disappeared for many years, but not for as long as the University of Toulouse.

I dislike education as a whole because it's mind numbingly controlling, disrespectful, domineering, and manipulative.

A University is the tertiary educational institution as a Whole. The what you called... schools... NO. Each Subject is called, The College of.... Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Information Science, Medicine, etc etc... Yanks in YankLand call tertiary education ... going to/attending a College! This is not correct. They attend a University and take subjects in each of the different Colleges in the University Campuses. In the YankLand system: Subjects: Chemistry 101, 102, 103, 201, 202, 203... etc have the course taught in the College of Chemistry at the University of... xyz. Biology: 101, 102, 103, 201, 202, 203, etc... are courss in the College of Biology at the University of ... xyz. In All other countries, secondary education is more intensive so students ONLY study/read their coursework in the College of their Degree. A person doing a degree in ancient Latin/Greek would do coursework ONLY at the College of Classical Languages at the University of.... xyz Outside of YankLand, all the ancillary coursework University students have to do in YankLand = were all done at the Secondary Education Level. A Chemistry degree in YankLand would have to do 1/4 of work in Chemistry and 3/4 of coursework in other subjects such as English, Humanities, Sciences, even a Physical Education requirement! Europe, Canada, Mexico, Australia, NZ, China, Argentina, Nigeria, etc... all follow the tertiary education is ONLY in the subject(s) of the degree.
