For speedsolving square tile puzzles, the most popular high-level method is the "fringe" method. You solve the top and left layers at the same time (1,2,3,4,5,9,13), which would reduce a 15-puzzle to an 8-puzzle in the bottom-right corner. Then you solve the top and left layers of the "psuedo" 8-puzzle in the bottom-right corner (6,7,8,10,14), and then you solve the 3-puzzle, which is trivial. Every time when you finish with the puzzle, put a thin strip of paper or thread under the blank piece, so that you could remove the blank tile easily next time.

i most def played a tiny mini 15 puzzle as a kid. having them be so tiny and of course no magnets meant it would fall apart easily. im really digging this bigger magnetic design i think i will cop one

15 puzzle from Qiyi is a good one, but it is too big and heavy, it takes a lot of effort and a lot of extra hand movements. In Russia, a small company has released a significantly better magnetic model recently, but so far it is still at the prototype stage.

there is a method for that, but it makes sense only for bld solve or fixing swaps in big puzzles for regular solve it's just intuitive

My puzzle is not a Klotski and the magnets actually hinder fast movement. They have some protruding grid lines on the tray that also slows it down. Trying to dry magnetized and will put talc on tray to see if I can speed it up.👍👍👍

for 8 puzzle the fastest method is "just solve it". I don't use a real method, I just solve all of the pieces at once, usually optimal solution and almost always within a few moves of optimal

dphdmn the app is honestly really good, it times your solves as soon as you swipe, I’ve gotten 3 sec on the 8 puzzle and something like 38 on the 15 puzzle. The app is called 15 Puzzle(HD) by Yevgen Sokolov. It does sometimes get a bit weird as in one of the “tiles” will just go into a impossible position in between 2 spots and won’t move. Unless it happens on a good scramble I don’t mind, just gotta restart the app.

@@e-towncuber5522 try 15 puzzle app from Igor Talankin, it has many good settings, and more importantly, it allows you to move puzzle with hover style (by clicking on empty spot and dragging), it's the fastest and easiest way

I just got one from Amazon. Looks identical with magnets too. But, on the top front it is total Chinese writing. No English at all. Package too. I have had tiles stick or pop out on speed solve. Rule: Don't go too fast!! 👎👍👎👍 Will try some talcum powder on tray 👍👍👍.

Fringe method exists. But it’s more a pattern than a method. You solve: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 13, 6, 7, 8, 10, 14, 11, 12, 15.

Start with 15 and go back to 1. (Put 15 where 1 normally needs to go, 14 where 2 normally needs to go 13 where 3 normally needs to go. Etc etc.) I bet you that it is impossible to do in reverse order if you dont take pieces out.

yeah but it's easy to do if you are strating with blank 0 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 it actually makes more sense because if you are starting with 15 you are changing parity

FYI easier to scramble by removing the pieces, laying them face down or draw them from a bag randomly.

When the 15 puzzle was first invented in the 1880s, the standard way to scramble was to take the pieces out of the frame and put them back in randomly. This drove people crazy because only half of the scrambles made this way can be solved (proven mathematically). This is why the little pocket sized puzzles produced in the 20th century had non removable pieces.
