I hope he appreciates it after you get it done.I found a cherry second hand mountain bike and fixed what few problems it had for my nephew who needed a bike.I'm pretty sure that he rode it until he got a flat and parked it next to the garage and left it to rot.

15 dollars see,a like a great deal. At a police auction, my dad found an almost perfect condition specialized stumpjumper m2 with the future shock fork and grease guard hubs laced to ceramic coated rims as well as an xtr drivetrain for $45. No one else knew anything about bikes and it went so cheap because the tires were slashed. Sometimes great deals come around and I think you got one of them.

specialized stumpjumper m2 exactly. This is a RockHopper MK2.

My first thought was you could add discs (seeing as it has mounts), lighter bars and maybe rigid forks (to reduce maintenance worries) and It would make an excellent general duty bike... Nice find.

Awesome deal! I found the same model except it is black with blue and white decals. It was a throw away bike with no wheels. I brought it home and replaced anything that was junk. I may have at most 50 dollars into it. He loves the bike and it’s the perfect size for him. I collect a lot of used parts. Love fixing up old bikes. I really like watching your vids! I think it’s great what u do.👍😎

Due to reinforced rear triangle, this is a real good candidate for a hub drive eBike conversion. OBTW - that front fork weighs in at ~2500 grams. Try an air fork (Marzocchi, Manitou, etc.) at around 1,700 grams. Makes it a completely different bike :)

I think you can save these forks. On the plastic bit that went out there is a plastic clip that clips to a hole in the lowers. If you take them apart, service them and put the plastic bit back in they will be good as new.

I found a 2010 Hardrock Sport in the same situation last winter. Landlord down the street tossed in the garbage. It is a sleeper deal. Love how Specialized gave you the option of v-brake or disc in the back. Light frame. Had a local shop convert drivetrain to Alivio M4000, used SR XCR and Trektro Hydro brakes. Rides nice on those Fasttrack TK tires. NICE SCORE RJ!
@Tacsi1116 жыл бұрын
Joe N nice steal! i have a Hardrock Comp, no idea what year, but i bought it for 180€. Rode it for 3 years until all the components wore down and now I upgraded it. Alivio groupset with an Exotic rigid fork and disc brakes. All in all, it weighs around 10.5kg, with a 62cm frame size! I'm super happy with it.

I found an older Specialized Hardrock at a yard sale this spring, has a rigid fork however, does also need work, new tubes, tires, chains, cables, brakes, as well as some surface rust that need to be cleaned, found a older Giant Rincon, which also needs some work, at the same yard sale, both were free however.

nice bike dude. paid $10 for a like new Giant Boulder SE 26'' mtn bike. thing was gorgeous with disc brakes front and rear and a cat eye speedometer attached to it. lady's son moved out and on to college and wanted to get rid of it. so I asked her, ''what would you take for it?'' she said, ''what do u have in ur pocket?'' I said. ''$10'' she said, ''that's fine''. and the deal was done. nothing wrong with it

Nice bike and those forks are not done that are totally fixable its just the top seals that have popped out and the plastic shims have slide up, if you take them apart clean them and re-oil / greese them they will be perfectly fine.
@matthewabt93486 жыл бұрын
yeah i fixed the forks on my old bike by using a small stick and hitting the seal back in with a rock( i was on the trail with no tools)
@joen39924 жыл бұрын
From my personal experience. This model can be converted to a 700c if you change the forks to rigid or shocks. 27.5 is pushing it. 29er is out of the question. Not enough rear clearance. But as a 700c with disc brakes, it works! Turns the bike into a valid commuter with mountain bike feel and strength. They are gems, cheap to buy used. Lots of potential.

Nice find. I just scored a Trek 3900 for 10 bucks at goodwill yesterday which is surprising since I’ve seen shitty bikes there for 3-4 times that. It had 2 flat tires, a janky kickstand and the chain was off the sprocket so I’m assuming they just thought it was in bad shape. The tires pumped up fine, I removed the kickstand and cleaned it up. It has disk brakes and all. There were 2 other treks there, a kids bike and a woman’s bike. I’m guessing a family just didn’t use them much and donated them all.

That is a killer deal I would of paid 25 for just the frame. The handle bars aren’t my favorite design but I would gladly do it. The SR forks should be replaced with something that could do that awesome bike justice, get an XC30 or some kind of Rockshox if you can find them cheap enougj

I like your find, RJ, thanks for showing us. And I agree, those graphics need to be deciphered before you realize it is a Specialized Hard Rock.
@lineartechbd16006 жыл бұрын
Actually, if you use a long bristled stiff wire brush to knock off any mud and dirt, then spray on a thin coat without wiping it off, it will soak into the rubber and make the tire look like it just came out of the tire mold . I was shocked at how wd40 made tires look brand new. It was so good, the employees at the store kept selling the returned bikes as new. I had to tell them to stop trying to fool customers and mark the bike down as used. I have assembled over 50000 bikes and have repaired thousands. This method works great. The key is to spray it on and leave it on without wiping it, it leaves a nice finish and it looks new. You should try it on an old dirty tire. Make sure the wd40 sprays on in a mist, don't use the straw on the can. Oh, the best method is to have the bike on a stand, spin the wheel and spray it as it spins....wipe the wd40 off of the rims with alcohol and you are done. This also works great on the plastic trim on fitness equipment.

I used to specialize...no pun intended...in making crappy bikes like this look new. I would remove the steel cables, lube them, take a chain off of another bike hanging up in the store room, spray wd40 on the tires and let them soak in overnight (this made them look new).

Don't know about the US but here in the Uk you can pick up some great bikes at the local authority auctions. Stolen bikes whose owners can't be found, bikes found in a ditch on the highway etc, etc. Some in good condition, often in a similar condition to this, they go for peanuts.
@RJTheBikeGuy6 жыл бұрын
I have have heard of police auctions, but I don't think they do that in my city for bikes. Cars yes, bikes, no.
@20alphabet6 жыл бұрын
Good chance those bikes are twice stolen. My neighbor had several bikes stolen from his backyard shed. He reported to the police, gave descriptions, serial #, and everything needed to identify the bikes, and was assured that if the bikes were ever recovered they would call him. Later the same year the "unclaimed items" auction was held, and he went there to see if there were any good deals. ALL of his stolen bicycles were there to be auctioned! You see, the police make no money by returning your stolen property. I wouldn't participate in that, knowing what I know.

Fork, please. Not "forks." Best money here would be to find a rigid steel fork that fits for a few bucks. Unless you have a squishy fork that fits and is in good shape, it's not going to be worth it to replace it with another squishy fork. It will function better as a complete bike with a rigid fork also. Another option would be to have the fork rebuilt, or do it yourself, but they can get expensive also. Good luck!
@mykytajex22486 жыл бұрын
I think the stanchion tubes are dead, to say the least. Replacing stanchion tubes is expensive, and remember, this bike is supposed to be cheap and reliable.

To do it correctly, you would want to replace the suspension fork with a suspension-corrected rigid fork. Otherwise the front end of the bike would be lower and it would ride goofy!

Never buy a expensive mountain bike buy a cheap one with a frame that suits you then just buy decent parts for it like derailleur shocks sprockets tires handlebars gears ect probably wouldn't even need to change that much on it. it's a lot a cheaper and will do the same thing as a expensive bike.
