So Musk thinks that boring a smaller diameter tunnel will speed up progress, well as an ex Tunnel Senior Inspector of Works I can tell you answer is NO. I have worked around the world on some of the largest tunnel projects built and can tell you in each we have looked to speed up progress in anyway imageable and it all came back to the distance to the tunnel face grew each day and so services had to be advanced and journey times increased. My first TBM job was in London UK on the Victoria Line part of the London Underground, we had open faced TBM as we were mining through London clay one of the best ground conditions any one can mine in. To bore 20 inches took 3 mins to erect the precast non bolted lining to 3 to 4 mins. The mined clay was taken away in rail skips and new concrete units were delivered by the returning empty skip train. Now this is the slow part and gets slower with every yard of advancement. To speed up the delivery cycle rail points crossing were installed at staging post where extra train would wait for the loaded to pass. The record advance was 23 cycles. OK TBMs have advanced in design but this has only been in soil stability not much has changed in supply delivery times. Slurry machines have done away with removing spoil via rail cars and is pumped along steel pipes. This have to be added to during the TBM advance. Larger diameter tunnel mean stocks of lining van be held closer to the TBM, but the downside is extra excavated material. The TBM shown in the presentation is an Earth Pressure Balance TBM the screw conveyor is used to balance the earth pressure in font and above the TBM. The screw will dump material onto a conveyor belt, now this can be extended along the tunnel as its built, but extending it on a daily basis takes time. Time that's taken off the advance rate. If belts are not used the its dump trucks or a rail system. The Worlds Tunnel Industry waits with bated breath for this new comer on the block to prove them all wrong

Good Moaning Vietnam: They are building their own TBM now "Proof Rock" which will be battery powered with Tesla Model 3 battery packs and motors. No services to extend. They also have an electric locomotive for muck removal and segment delivery, again Tesla Model 3 components. They will have passing lanes to improve delivery times. The new TBM "Proof Rock" will be able to drill continuously and install tunnel segments at the same time. Elon has determined that TBM's are not thermally limited at the cutting head face, so they are increasing the power to approach those limits. Elon estimates 10 - 15x faster than the TBM in this video.

a very fluffy video. Two major things you forgot to mention about The Boring Company. 1. Boring Company was awarded permission to dig a tunnel from downtown Chicago to O'hare Airport (huge news, how could you miss this?) and 2. They are trying to bore faster than their pet snail Gary. (I'm not quite sure that Elon Musk hates public transportation but guess it makes good clickbait) Was going to click on another video but probably be as vapid as this one.

I think that the boring company will not revolutionize the future of transportation, at least not by itself, but it will allow Musk to dive deep into a lot of different industries. For example the last point; the boring company might help with the colonization of Mars. It’s gonna open a lot of possibilities for Musk but it won’t revolutionize transportation by itself.
