I have a healthy level of respect for cockatoos. I would love to see more of them free flying- especially because I rarely ever see umbrellas or moluccans flying. They definitely require a special kind of person, and I have recognized that I am not one of those people. Although I’d take a red tailed black cockatoo any day!

Grace T, I have two red tailed black cockatoos. They are the labradors of the cockatoo world. I have looked for over a year now and cannot find ANYONE to help me free flight train them. Its infuriating.

@@GraceT They are pretty rare here in Australia too and they are a protected species. They are such magnificent creatures. The one thing I noticed which is really different to the other parrots we've cared for is that I am 'in conversation' with them all the time. They dont use their body language as much as they use a bunch of 'croaks' and peeps and soft chirps to respond when I ask them something or show them something. I know from the croaks or peeps whether they are happy, scared, frustrated, hungry or just wanting a cuddle. They also willingly build relationships with everyone in the family. It seems to be really important to them that everyone likes them.

I walked into a pet store about 10years ago and the owner walked up to me, put an Umbrella cock in my arms who proceeded to fall asleep as I pet her. Bird loved strangers. Ive met dozens of cockatoos over the years: the moluccan being my fave for temperament. They've all been very social with unique personalities, unlike macaws and greys that can be tough to tell apart. Cockatoos can be mischievous...like children, but at least they have personality. They acclimate to urban environments very well. Survival trait. They arent a rain Forrest bird any more. Birdtricks obviously prefers birds that are easy and formulaic to train. All my friends with cockatoos vehemently disagree with her assessment of them.

I've had my sulphur crested cockatoo for 21 years. Ever since he was 8 weeks old. He has been a great pet. He screams out a few times a day, has never been a plucker, and has only bitten me 3 times in the past 21 years. The latter started when I thought it was cute when he would grab hold of his treat bag and start to rip it to shreds. Out of the blue he tried to start ripping my hand to shreds. Needless to say I stopped letting him get a hold of his treat bag and rip it to shreds.

Awesome cockatoo and such a sensitive thoughtful owner!! It’s very possible she has actually trained the lack of enthusiasm her bird was showing with the cup trick. If you repeat unenthusiastic training even a few times with negative energy (trainer frustration and bird frustration) - well, practice makes perfect with both performance (quitting) and emotional state (discouraged, frustrated, averse to training). I would put away the cup trick for now and only train extremely short sessions with very easy kindergarten behaviors and great enthusiasm. Put him back in his cage when he’s done just 3 great reps of one trick. After a break, out again for a quick HOT training! Build back his great excitement for training. When you start back with any challenging behavior like the cup trick do your homework FIRST! On paper, break it down into tiny steps. If you break it down into steps he can easily achieve with almost no errors it’s a huge boost for his emotional value for training. Bird errors ALWAYS mean, “Oh shoot, I screwed up. I need to rethink my training steps. Let me immediately ask for a behavior he knows well, jackpot, and have a Yay You Did Great! party. This bird showed so many indications of how confused it was. Confusion kills training joy. But it can be reversed! By a wonderful trainer like this owner.

Another great video I learnt a lot watching, thanks :) That species specific frustration thing, are lorikeets the same as cockies on that? I think I might be getting that same thing in my lorikeets. Different topic, can anyone tell me what to do when a bird doesn't get off eggs after a month? Eggs were due to hatch 24th December if hatching, they haven't, she's still sitting on them. One has now broken & she's STILL sitting on it. She gets off to get food, but then returns & tucks them both under her, turning the broken one over so it's broken part goes into the nesting materials & the part in contact with her body looks/feels like a whole egg. I'm just not seeing ANY signs of her losing interest, what do I do if she doesn't? She's looking skinny & in really poor condition after a month of sitting on them & talking to them all night every night (boy bird's getting grumpy too from the lack of sleep due to her talking to her eggs all night) I've read all the stuff about leaving the eggs with them till they lose interest, but I've never seen anything about a bird not losing interest & what to do then. Would really appreciate some advice from ANYONE with ideas or experience on this!

He's so cute he looks super young! The new place must make birds loose concentration. I don't know if this is correct but I think cockatoos worry a lot like Blizz. That will make them get escalated like me LOL LOL. I worry a lot need to take antidepressants for anxiety. I can't concentrate, etc. But I'm just wondering if cockatoos worry a lot. Little Rocket is so cute seems calm much more calm than Blizz was. Im suggesting medicine for birds no way, but noticed that maybe they worry. Training would be the best and a lot of love.

@@jennabeverley4013 Same! Despite there size they can be just as emotional and tempermental as the big ones! I adopted two from a cousin who no longer wanted them and he had some bad ways of dealing with them that I am correcting. I have switched them to the seasonal feeding system along with Jamies birdseed mix, and veg pellets (they immediatly molted once they were switched since the food is so much better now) but its still a long road. One of them is very territorial towards the other and me (when i try to interact with him the other attacks) its been a challenge! I seperated them into there own cages and that has helped a lot (my cousin had them in one big cage together where the more dominant one could bully the other.)

The dot is there so the bird can tell which cup to look under. And slowly you make the dot so small that humans won't notice it but birds who have such better sight still will. Then they can impress with finding the right cup every time. :)
