15 tips & hacks on how to save money on airline tickets. Air travel doesn't have to cost a fortune if you know the tricks of the trade. I'll share some basics tips to save a bit, and some more advanced hacks to book the cheapest flights possible. Tip #1: Be Flexible. Want to fly at Christmas? It’s going to be expensive! Be flexible on your dates, and your destination, and perhaps your oubtound airport. Use the “flexible dates” feature that many search engines have. The difference of one day can be hundreds of dollars. Google Flights has a “Explore Destinations” feature. I often find it can be cheaper to fly to Japan than New York.
2. Use multiple airfare search engines
I like Kayak, Google Flights, Momondo, Skyscanner
3. Plan in advance
Start at least 12 weeks out… book before 6 weeks out is usually best. Unless it’s an award booking, then when the schedule opens, often a year ahead… or last minute, like the day before.
Exception is holiday travel… you might want to book those way way out… but only if you KNOW you are traveling. Change fees will quickly eat up any savings.
4. Know how to spot a good price
Airline prices are a little bit like the weather, they fluctuate wildly
Search your route over time to see the fare go up, down…
Kayak has a price forecast, and a “fare watch” tool
5. Pay attention to the fare rules
7, 14, 21 days before, saturday stay over… travel on a certain day
6. Look out for fare sales
Sign up for your favorite airlines e-mail list
Theflightdeal.com is a good site
Or mistake fares -- be quick -- but these sometimes get cancelled
7. Look for tickets as one person
Sometimes buying tickets for “2” or more is more expensive
But you can buy “1”... and then another “1”
8. Use one-way fares, multiple airlines for a round trip
Yes, you can fly United there, and Jet Blue back
But if you book 2 one ways, or multiple carriers your change fees can be higher
9. Fly a budget carrier
Southwest
Norwegian
WOW Air
Ryan Air, etc
10. Book from a different city / pay in a foreign currency
Japan Airlines might be cheaper if you book the ticket from their Japan website and pay in Yen.
11. Use a travel agent or consolidator
Some airlines -- particularly Asian carriers will offer heavily discounted tickets to travel agents
12. Book a connecting flight
Airlines know people like non-stops… so connecting flights are often (but not always) cheaper. Just make sure to have plenty of time at your connecting point.
13. Book a hidden city ticket
Book a flight with a stop-over, then get off at the stop-over instead of the final destination
Don’t check a bag though
And airlines really don’t like this
Best website for this is skiplagged -- to tell you how much the airlines don’t like this, United sued skiplagged
14. Fuel Dump
Book an extra city at the end that will cause the ticket to price without fuel surcharges, or lower fuel surcharges
LAX to Narita, Haneda to Burbank, then Burbank to the Caribbean
But you don’t take the last leg… airlines don’t like this one either
15. Award tickets
But this is a topic for a whole other video
Things that don’t matter:

After Midnight

As someone who works for an airline, my biggest tip is to book via the airline's website. Often it's just a bit more expensive. That way, you can contact them for service. Many travel agents are very hard to reach or offer bad service. If you book via a travel agent, they are in charge of your booking. We, as airline, are not allowed to help you.

Good site ! As a former Gate agent & Flight Attendant, I often tell people to book a "one-way " ticket (in each direction) or check for another "departure " city to flight out of. Some airports have higher landing fees, so if you live 30-50miles away from your home city , it may be cheaper to just DRIVE and fly out of the other city (for a cheaper flight), and if possible become friends with an airline employee! The "buddy passes" are great!!

We booked LEVEL Iberia for $280 from SFO-BCN for a cruise and then $148 from TPA-SJC on Southwest as we are going on a Trans Atlantic Cruise with a Med Cruise too. The LEVEL fare includes checked luggage and if you request a special meal like the Kosher meal they don't charge extra! I got a window and aisle seat in the mini cabin! It works well(:

I live equidistant between two hub airports, with a smaller regional airport closer by. When I book, I always check the prices from all three to my destination. Sometimes, the regional airport will surprise me and actually offer the best fares, but if I can save $200+ dollars per ticket by driving an extra 45 minutes to the hub, I'll do it. Even an additional $50/ticket really starts to add up when taking a family vacation with a family of 4. I also check my near my destination to see if there are alternative airports to fly into. Adding a little bit of drive time at either end of the flight can really save big money.

Can you elaborate on hidden city tickets, im a bit confused? Are you saying book from point A to point B with a layover, and the layover is the actual destination you'd like to fly to, so it was cheaper to book from point A to B but technically you getting off at "your destination" which is the "layover"/btwn point of A & B? Is that why u suggested not checking in luggage?

Not everyone can afford an extra $300+ though. Be grateful you have the privilege to “pay a little extra”. Most people can’t even afford to fly, let alone paying full price.

Well, considering some of the horror stories and my own personal experiences with them (plane change turned my larger, cushier, more legroom seat into a simple economy seat without any compensation) I'm not surprised.

If time of day does not matter why do the ticket prices go up as you book your departure later in the day?
@YellowProductions
@YellowProductions 4 жыл бұрын
Because more people book the later in the day tickets... So as more people book a flight, the prices for the remaining tickets go up.. but the price itself isn't based on the time.. it's based on the route and fare classes available. So those afternoon flights likely had all their cheap fare classes taken up earlier

I think they sued the passenger. The airline wasn’t successful. The court said that the passenger had breached the contract, however the airline’s dilemma was damages. How did they calculate them? Essentially they pulled a number out of the air so there was no loss to the airline.

Fair enough. It's a pet peeve of mine. Several times I've had extended delays due to these selfish tightwads. A delay of 15-20 mins while we wait just in case they are delayed in the bathroom or Duty Free can lead to huge delays waiting for a new take off slot to open up as well as a new landing time at the next destination.

Do you purchase the cheapest advertised fare? I just booked flights and instead of getting the cheapest fare with no changes or cancellations, I upgraded to a more expensive ticket to allow changes or cancellations for a fee.

@@YellowProductions if I don't pay for assigned seating, will my party (girlfriend, 6y/o child, & myself) be seated together still? Assigned seating was about another $275 round trip... Btw I'm flying from YXY-FLL about 9.5 hrs flying time. Fact is that it's never that cheap to fly out of Northern Canada, it's just something we have to deal with and accept living this far north.

im recently thinking in going from central america (nicaragua) to be precise to japan in a trip with a couple friends. but i got a question maybe you can help me to solve this one or anyone else who is used to travel a lot. we were thinking to buy first class tickets to japan. but a lot of our stops in the flight to japan are just like 1-3 hours flights so we were thinking to buy just thefirst class seats for "long trip" (LAX or NY to Japan airport, those type of flights for more thn 8 hours or something like that). but like we said we are not experts and many of the websites we were searching they just give you the whole trip as first or businness class my question is how we can do that or tis posibble to do it? its better to buy other seats and try to upgrade them in a diferent place or what can we do?

Utilizing Hidden City tickets should not be considered a good tip. Airlines have gone after the individual ticket holder to make a point against future abuse.

This has only happened twice and all they did was ban them from the airline. And the only reason they were caught was because they did it very very frequently. Like weekly or a few times a month and they also used their frequent flier numbers. That’s how they got caught. As long as you only do hidden city tickets no more than once a month or once every other month and don’t use your membership account, you will be fine. It is also not illegal so, you won’t get into legal trouble. They will only ban you from said airline.
