the best advice i’ve found for choosing colors with enough contrast is to take a picture of the colors you’re thinking of using, and then revert it into black and white. it’s a lot easier to see if your colors have enough contrast when seeing them this way. if two colors look almost identical next to each other in black and white they probably won’t have enough contrast when used together in a project.

this works in most cases, so its a good tip, but not in all! reverting it to black and white only shows contrast in value, not in tone or saturation. if someone is for example making something in pastel colors, the colors might still have good contrast even though they all have similar values and would look the same in black and white, by using tonal contrasts like cold and warm colors, or complementary colors! so the colors looking the same in black and white isnt necessarily a recipe for failure

There is a red window thing you can use in the store (I got it in the quilt shop) and you can see that through the cellophane window. Same principal but you dont have to wait.

I have a “rule of three” with my knitting: I can start project 1 for example and work it until I’m bored. Then I’ll cast on project 2. Work on that for a bit, then maybe go back to project 1 when I just need a break (from cabling, colorwork, etc.). From there, I’ll cast on project 3. By this point, I’m usually close to finishing project 1 or 2 when I need a break from 3. I can finish one of these, keep making progress on the other two, and cast on a third again. I always have three projects in progress. And I find that 80-90 rows of stockinette for example is less dreary. I also use markers in areas where I need to keep track of how many increases I’ve done (I often forget to write things down to keep track- the colored markers are so helpful).

I've never really thought about it before but that's what I do, too! I usually have one bigger, longer term project that I whittle away at, one that's a little more challenging/requires focus and one that is just for fun, a dish cloth or hat or amigurumi or something.

My grandma taught me to always slip the first stitch of a row to get a really clean edge. Works nicely. My greatest problem with having UFOs (unfinished objects/projects) lying around is not knowing where I left off if I (as happens too often) haven't made proper notes along the way. And then they start haunting me which leads to me not wanting to touch them and then I feel like a fail. So I tend to try and push through a project, because I like finished and hurting (figuratively) better than failed, but that's just me.

Learning to recognize an increase or decrease row to count and find your place is a very helpful skill too. Recognizing all your stitches really helps. Especially when doing complicated lace or pattern repeats. Instead of having to constantly check the pattern you can tell what stitch is next by what is below.

I fully agree about not feeling guilty about having a lot of projects on the go! Often, by having a lot of projects it actually encourages me to go back and finish some old ones. Knitting should be fun, so I don't want to be stressed out because I feel like I should feel guilty! 🍍

Exactly, I totally agree and feel the same. I love to be able to try out an idea or start a new project when I get that idea and have the energy and spark, because I know there will always be days when I don’t feel so insoired so then it’s nice to have some options. Also, it’s nice to have some more ”simple” projects too that I can take with me on the road for example (knitting with 4 colors in the train isn’t always the most convenient! 😅)

Omg, this must be like a thing that just feels natural. I just started knitting. Like a week ago 😂 making my first scarf. But about day 3 I started knitting the same way she does. Kind like continental but also using the right index finger to “help” bringing the yarn haha. I was wondering if that’s okay or “correct” to knit like that. It just kinda happened for me. Although I’m still figuring out how to holds my yarn for a good tension without making it super hard for it to slide through my fingers.

🍓😉 I just found your show today (and subscribed) . I'm 79 and have been knitting for 60 years. Your presentation was lovely and really communicated your enjoyment of knitting. Your tips are right on target... especially regarding gauge swatches and making good notes. I have come to doing those things along the way in my knitting journey...especially when it's a new pattern or a different yarn...I make (and enjoy) swatching cables and new pattern details so that I can work out any questions that arise...I usually buy an extra ball of yarn for swatching and if I end up needing more yardage for my project it is my insurance. 🍍

🍍Loved this video! Completely agree that having lots of projects on the go at the same time is absolutely fine. Creativity is not a linear process, we don't just move from from beginning to end. Also, knitting is such a sensory experience, sometimes I feel like working with a particular colour or texture, which fits with my mood. The colour may serve to calm or enliven me, and knitting a fine yarn and complex pattern is an altogether different enterprise from the joy of a bulky yarn which produces rapid results. We are complex beings with different needs at different times, my knitting definitely reflects that!

I am one of those knitters who has to "finish" before going to a new project, and I have finally found what works for me and perhaps this will help others - Have one "difficult" or challenging piece going and have one "easy" piece going. I watched this twice. I taught myself to knit in the 80's. Holding the yarn in my left hand came naturally (im in the usa) but I never realized how much better my knitting would look if I held the needles at a constant angle. Thank for that.

🍍Hi Kika! I've been knitting for 25+ years, but I couldn't pull away from your tips video. You're so supportive, I really love it how you encourage beginner knitters there. Another tension related problem that I feel might be worth mentioning is maintaining tension. On my knitting journey, I've often gauge-swatched, gotten the right gauge and started knitting happily, only to find later that I had veered wildly off-gauge and ended up with a much bigger/smaller garment. A handy little tip here would be to measure your gauge from time to time as you're working on your project. Thank you so much again for all the inspiration, support and expertise!

Thank you so much for your videos, I'm really enjoying working my way through them. I've been knitting for many years, but it's always lovely to learn new things. I had to take a break from knitting for a couple of years due to arthritis, I turned to crocheting, but your videos have drawn me back to knitting and I now take a more leisurely approach and stop for a while when my fingers get sore. I've found that having 2 or 3 projects on the go help - basic stocking stitch, Fairisle or textured - helps, I now totally view knitting as a hobby and don't worry if it takes a while to knit a sweater rather than think I've got to knit it in a couple of weeks. 🍍 I really enjoyed this video! Agree with everything, especially knitting a swatch. I have been guilty of not doing that in the past, but now I knit one (or more!) for every project I start. I’m not a fan of folder collars though, not sure why. I tried a couple of times and they feel a little tight around my neck. I’m not a fan of turtleneck sweaters either, so maybe it’s just that I like roomier(?) collars? 🍍 one of my favorite tips is to have an easy project (such as a scarf that’s just stockinette) and a more involved project that requires more concentration. I knit while watching Netflix and always have to have a stockinette project to knit so I don’t have to look at it.

For the "calculating how much yarn you need" part: I like to just buy an extra skein or maybe even 2-3 if you can't check it. (Happens a lot because I'm not from the US but often use patterns from American creators.) I like that if you buy too much you can just make a small project out of the scraps like dish towels or dolls or something like that. :) Edit: For the taking notes part I really like writing my notes on my original pattern, a lot of people hate that because I also do that in books ^^´

I agree with nearly all of your tips, but I just absolutely, totally hate swatching, so it's actually my principle *not* to swatch :D If I was forced to swatch, I wouldn't knit at all, simple as that. (Plus, a small swatch doesn't tell much about the finished product anyway.) Also, I find shorter sleeves much more flattering than long ones (especially overlong - I find those horrible), but that's very personal :) So one can't really make a "rule" like that (tips 12 & 11). (I don't actually like any basic sweaters, not my style - I love feminine knits that don't look like sweaters, so we all have very different preferences. :)) 🍍

Thank you for the video! There are special ways of knitting the rim, the classic one is you always knit the last stitch and when you start you just move it across without knitting. So you add this one stitch for the rim to your pattern.

Nice video. Especially the tipps about neater edges and picking up dropped stiches. About having multiple projects: I think, it's nice to have different projects to switch between. Sometimes, you don't feel like working on one project but maybe you make progress with an other. But as someone, who tends to have way to many projects going on and getting confused, I think, it helps to set a limit to them, with which you feel comfortable. 3 projects at the same time works good for me. 🍍
