Have I been watching that long? I remember you collecting the weights.

Car batteries used to be a popular choice. Fifty years ago I cast a three ton keel from lead ingots. Barely weeks later the price of lead was a third what had been paid.

Im almost surprised you didnt fab your own steel too after watching this, man. I don't think I ever got the full story of how one day you went into the back yard and found a coupla tons of lead to pour in your keels. You may want to send an email out to all the patreons and your helpers that you got a new channel.

We make a lot of bottom leads for fishing from wheel weights. Also from old sail boat keels seems to be a lot in the panhandle. Cool to see your melting setup.

Like you, I collected lead during the building process. I stumbled upon someone that was getting rid of print type. These were like little chiclets, that were used in printing presses. I got 3,000 pounds in that haul. I never had to smelt it down, just poured it into a concrete slurry in the bilge.

the copper jacket on bullets is so you can push it to a high velocity without depositing lead on the barrel.

Doug, this was the first posting of yours I watched and I then I decided to sub to your channel. I enjoyed watching you go on to build Seeker and joined you and we worked on the Port Hole Frames together. You taught me how to weld. A skill that I went on to use quite a few times. As we say over here in the UK....It helped me to be able to put some meat next to the potatoes....Thanks for being patiant and teaching me how to do that. Have a great day....

On the subject of poison - I worked with plumbers years ago and one of them had serious alopecia and then started gradually losing his teeth - he was a smoker and it was the flux that he had all over his fingers getting transferred directly to his mouth via his cigarettes - the rest of us were okay 'cause we were more careful with how we handled flux and we didn't smoke.

My older son had high lead levels due to his not so bright mother not listening me about making formula from tap water that I knew had high levels of lead. She thought using bottle water was wasting money. She signed him up for WIC and the blood tests done at the Naval Hospital showed high lead and the Hospital Commander showed up at our home looking for the source. Fast forward the landscaper punctured the main line in the yard and when flushing the line a huge chunk of lead fell out that showed lots of corrosion. Luckily my son has grown up highly intelligent and shows no ill effects from the lead.

Thanks for this video, Doug! I was watching your videos when you were casting some of those ingots. It's a great story of resourcefulness. Those wheel weights would be in a landfill today. Instead, they're ballast for an amazing sailing ship. Fantastic!
@cpt.mirones51092 күн бұрын
Lead is expensiv and wont be thrown in a landfill. let alone because its a toxic heavy metal. but the wheel weight should be zink by now standard.

One of the first chapters of _Crystal Voyager_ is him barefoot in a huge scrap yard collecting and weighing the lead that he melted down with a home-made propane crucible to make the keel ballast. There's a village near me called _Furnace_ that has a charcoal fired blast smelter built in 1755 with bellows driven by a giant waterwheel off an awesome waterfall. They poured the molten metal into pigs arranged across the stone floor. Fascinating stuff!

Interesting, I think more people should EMBARK on a solar catamaran/sailboat restoration effort. Instead of building a whole ship, There are sooo many projects gone into stagnation, and with the environmental state, It is wise not to go out and spend money in the wrong places... The old 'junk' boats has high potential, if people could diy these things. And so is solar, with all of the retired panels, it is INCredibly cheap to get enough to move a boat steadily. And catamarans are just about right for stability and livability and safety, the whole gig. People should think about this first, One guy on the interenet is well documented on this specific endeavor. It should be popular. ALOT less of a possibility to have something go badly through out the project, with tutorials, solar is easy. Minimizing misinformation ANd generalizing common sense.
