Hope you read olders comments... Dude great video, for real, just got a pc engine mini (never had one before, i´m brazillian, they never got here officially). Now I´m in love with it, digging great games for it. Could you make a video about your favorite pc engine games MISSING from the mini? Based on this video, i`m sure I will love it. Also, you got a subscriber for life today!

Why not just get the emulator in the meantime? Everytime i watch videos like these and see something i like i just quickly open my internet, go to a game(rom) site, download the rom and then repeat. Now my android phone is a living arcade system. If somebody gave me this phone as a child i would've fainted😂

Never thought I'd hear someone talk about Dragon Egg! Aoi Blink is great, too; I loved the variety in weaponry and there's something very charming about the music. I also had some fun with Fushigi no Yume no Alice (Alice's Mysterious Dream (HEY! THE 10 JAPANESE WORDS I KNOW FINALLY CAME IN HANDY!)) I have a few that you might like: + Coryoon is one of many Shooters, this time starring a dragon with several different breath attacks. Visually, it looks a bit like Keio Flying Squadron, but it's a bit easier, in my opinion. + Final Soldier is a Vertically-Scrolling Shooter that's along the lines of Soldier Blade, and is almost as good. One thing I love in Shooters is bosses that have a ton of parts to blow up, and this one has so much of that that it reminds me a bit of Thunder Blade on the SEGA Master System (don't remember if the Arcade original had that). + Makai Prince Dorabocchan is a neat Platformer that has an absolutely gorgeous final stage. This is also the predecessor of The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang on the SNES. + Son Son 2 is a Platformer with bigger stages that require some exploration, and you can find all sorts of upgrades. You have magic, which acts like the subweapons in Castlevania, too. It's one of those games that's just somehow bigger than the sum of its parts. + Tower of Druaga isn't my favorite game on the system, but for me, was the most satisfying. Ideally, I really like Tower of Druaga, but it's just an absolute chore to actually play. This version fixes that with much smoother mechanics, and needless to say, the graphics get a huge boost, too.

Here's an odd fact about Aoi Blink/Blue Blink, it was the last anime show Osamu Tezuka worked on and he unfortunately passed away during production. It's a great show with very cool ideas and comments about what's real, what's an illusion, fantasy becoming reality and so forth, highly recommended. The ending is something I will never forget, I've seen it 30 years ago on tv.

Thanks for the video with all the information on the system. I bought a base system back in the 90’s and a few games. Later in the 90’s when the company went out of business a local game store was selling base turbo graft systems for $5 and games for $1. I bought 4 used base systems and a lot of the games. NEC Technologies was 20 minutes from where I lived and I used to go there and play games before they were released in return for filling out a survey giving an opinion about the game I played. . One time they even gave me my favorite game for the system, Neutopia II. I still have the game factory sealed in the box. They also gave me some promotional material which consisted of 5 by 7 inch cards which had the artwork of the box of the game and a written description of the game. I still have these cards too. It is interesting to find out now that some of the games are worth over $100 now because I remember seeing those turbo graft game cards for $1 in used game bins at small game stores in the 90’s. Back then you could also buy a converter that attached to the Turbo Grafx that played PC Engine games. I bought a lot of those too for $1 back in the late 90’s at small game stores with used games...

Great list, I also want to add that there were ports of sega games like Golden axe and Columns for the pc engine and I think they are worth checking out. Also Final blaster which is a great vertical shooter would be one of my underrated PC Engine games.

Very nice. My friend had a tg16 when I had a Nintendo, and I thought he was missing out. Now, much later, I wish I had paid more attention to the system. My friend had mostly sports games, though. I am saving up for a modded turboexpress, but should start with a working duo. Thanks for this!

Great list..I have many of these. You really need to check out Namco’s Marchen Maze. It’s like a top down version of that FACE Alice game. Simple great arcade fun with catchy music.

These all look like fun! Nice to see some recs for some interesting platformers on the TG-16, since I tend to think of it as very shmup-heavy.

I love having my Turbo Duo, Turbo Express, Turbo Everdrive (flashcart) converter (for playing physical PCE HUE Card games), a bunch of TG16 game and some TGCD game. Got all of it but the Turbo Everdrive (flashcart) converter from my uncle in a trade. I love the TG16. i think it my all time favorite none disc based console. A disc based add-on does not count as it's not a stand alone console it's a add-on. I love the TG16 so much when I saw Cody (co-owner) from Pink Gorilla in Seattle, Washington had a car adapter for a Turbo Express on his Twitch for the store he was selling on stream I snatched it up. I love the console that much.

Nicktoons Freeze Frame Frenzy was a GBA game I had as a kid that's actually the same gameplay idea as Photograph Boy! I've never seen a similar game too it, I guess the Nicktoons game must have been inspired by it

Great video John. I got into PC Engine 2 years ago and have a solid little collection now. Love the machine. A few suggestions - gokuraku chuka taisen (aka cloud master) is a fun shmup; gomola speed is a very cool evolution of snake; makai prince dorabochan is the forerunner to spike Mcfang on the SNES and a very fun platformer; Mr Heli is an awesome scrolling shooter a touch like Barunba.

I cant recall if you've covered this one or not and Ill go back and watch but one of my favs is Fausseté Amour on PCengine CD from 1993. Platformer with a kind of bionic commando style swinging aspect, but more fantasy flare in design. Levels are pretty strait foward, not as creative as bionic commando but it has nice anime cut scenes and voice acting and pretty good music.

Won an Ebay auction for a TG16 and some games, and was surprised to find the seller included an import converter. Didn't even mention it in the listing! Got Legendary Axe 2, as an import copy was cheaper, and some assorted shumps from Japan. The Japanese sellers even included a free puzzle game!

Turbo Grafx had better graphics than NES, and plenty of games-so why did it fail? I think because it released next to no LICENSED games in the US (Looney Tunes, Disney, Tom and Jerry, Batman, Star Wars, etc.). Those licensed games were what brought people into the console systems back in the late 80's, early 90's. Thanks much for this video.

Download and Dragon egg are awesome. The only flaw with Dragon Egg is that it feels unfinished. Stages get smaller/shorter as the game goes on like they didn't have time to complete them. Then Boss rush the end. Override and Eternal City are two PC Engine games everyone should play.
