I just read an article about the USS Indianapolis that said few of the sailors were actually killed by sharks - they drowned or died of dehydration and then the sharks gorged themselves on all the dead bodies. Those burned at the stake had an opportunity to bribe their guard to strangle them before the flames were lit. Of course you took your chances. No guarantee the guard would do it. If you were poor too bad. Nothing new there. Pirates would also keel- haul men. This involved putting ropes around the wrists of the condemned and tossing him under the ship. Needless to say it wasn't pretty when they pulled him up. And people think lethal injection is barbaric? Get a grip folks! ISIS probably looked at these before coming up with their ugly, inhuman methods of killing. And that's in 21st century.

Not really. It's the most painful QUICKEST way to die. You'll probably burn 30% of your body before you pass out from pain or die so it won't be that bad. Prolonged torture means days of being tortured without letting you fall asleep during the torture.
