"They" meaning all your nephews? Or all people that ride motorcycles? For what it's worth, lots of people who ride do think about what happens if you don't die in a major motorcycle accident. In fact, one of the rather perverse justifications for no helmet required states was a medical study that showed that although helmets reduced major cranial injuries at lower speeds, that above 30 or 35mph it tended to break the neck leaving people quadriplegic. If they survived. I wore a helmet when I still rode.

After every pursuit the cruiser had to be taken Out of Service, the officer wrote a description of what stresses that the vehicle had been put under. Then the entire vehicle had to be inspected, brake linings recorded and special attention placed on any systems on the cruiser that could have been damaged by those stresses before it could be returned to service. Maybe that wasn't a good choice on his behalf but it's not worth getting behind the guy and chasing him at 150 Mi an hour and pushing him to see if he can wreck and get killed or kill others. Just isn't worth it. And if you don't care about him, you can at least think about his family and people who do care about him. Where I live, if it exceeds 100 mph, it will be called off. It's not just the biker going that fast. The cop could have an accident too. If his car hit another at 150 mph., every one involved would probably die or wish they had. The driver and his passenger each died and I wish I would have, too. My back was broken, my pelvis was broken, my rotator cuff was torn, my biceps tendon was torn off, and I had a concussion that lasted over a year. I really think it would make great sense to limit acceleration (and top speeds), with both motorcycles and cars. Situations like this put the police officer in a nearly impossible fix. The driver has no intention of stopping and the officer can't "catch" the bike. Not only is the enforcement person being put at risk at these speeds, the general public is in peril too. Yet, often afterwards, the pursuer is faced with questions and hatred even though the "runner" was entirely at fault. If I had a say, I'd lean toward that driver having his licence pulled for the rest of his life. Isn't this why we have Police, to protect the innocent.

I understand the officer is doing what they have been asked to do. But, I shudder at the thought of that cruiser hitting one of those vehicles while doing 135 mph.

I was disgusted with the way the officer passed that one vehicle over the left shoulder when it could not get out of the way fast enough. The officer risked potentially dozens of lives and millions of dollars in economic value for the community with that silly maneuver. A crash in traffic that tight would have almost certainly caused a pile-up, and things as simple as unusual traffic/crashes can have meaningfully negative community economic impact through damaged property, spoilage of goods, medical expenses, lost wages, etc. Police are supposed to be held to higher standards than civilians; driving like that is absolutely reprehensible and unbecoming.

Yeah, people are too black and white when it comes to PIT stops. It’s hard to have a conversation bc if a reckless PIT is pulled off successfully, people say it was worth it, and that can set the precedent for more risky PITS that will actually kill people. There need to be clearer sanctions on when and how to perform a PIT to best protect the public. One civilian life lost in a dangerous maneuver is one too many. And many forget cops are people too, their egos and desire for their own fast and furious moment can be a factor. Overall, rules need to be stricter on these.

As someone who has actually responded to motorcycle vs car accidents, I can say if that bike did actually hit that car, it did not do it until after it was already down. Doesn't even look like there is damage to that car. There is a video of a motorcycle running from the cops in LA and he hit a car at 76 mph. The motorcyclist was thrown into the air over the car landing 100 feet away and clothing was ripped away from his body. The car was struck so hard that not only was the front end destroyed, airbags deployed, and it shifted the car into another lane. Think about the damage a deer can do to a vehicle and the deer isn't made out of metal. Also in this case, the motorcyclist survived. I have seen when a motorcycle actually rear ends a car at 100 mph plus. Sliding across the pavement is one thing, the sudden stop from 100 mph isn't pretty.

I'm 74 now but when I returned from Nam I bought a Kawasaki Z1 900 at the time one of the fastest bikes on the road, Japan's first super bike top speed was over 130mph. I was lighted up by a Highway Patrol in Florida on I-95 and to this day I don't know why I decided to run. But I did and after running for about 20 minutes over 100mph I lost the Cop and was never caught. I knew he never got close enough to see my Tag or what kind of Bike I was on. To this day it still haunts me..

4:33 That's one smooth well made highway. When I take a curve like that where I live at anything over 60, it bobs me up and down and tries to throw me off the road. Saw that happen to a tractor without trailer, he went into the grass sideways but didn't flip.
