Do you think that because it was a thin spall off the cortex of a nodule that’s why its snapping in half? You don’t know what the original boulder went through before being spalled like falling or having other rocks hit it as they fell ect. Or the incipient cracks could have been installed when it was spalled? I always pay the “ULTIMATE PRICE”!! 13:35. I guess it’s just the tax to learning this skill lol. You have to spend at least $3,000 before you can start making points😂 good news is I’m a little over halfway there😂 I’ve snapped almost every point I get close to finishing and that’s not counting the spalls I just ruin and turn to gravel. Out of the volcanic glass material. I have the best luck with dacite and black obsidian. When I order Triple flow and mahogany obsidian they snap in half as soon as I open the box and look at it😂 not really but that’s what it feels like sometimes lol.

Yeah. I completely understand. Just don't try to make them thin. Leave them thick. Especially the obsidian.

@@KnapperJackCrafty I know you love hearing how new knappers want to make big points lol but I’ve been trying to achieve a 4in-6in long 2-3in wide biface to make a knife for my self. I can get it bifaced and sorta thin but during some point in the thinning stage I snap it every time. How thick on average is thin enough on a 4in long 2in-3in wide obsidian point? Idk if I have a false perception of how thin it should be as I’ve never seen one in person or and most likely I’m just new and inexperienced. I can get it to about 1/2in thick then usually snap it when it gets thinner then 3/8”. Your points look so thin and perfect and i might be holding my self to a too high of a standard lol.

@@austinlong7700 Measure the width and then the thickness. Divide the width by the thickness. Write down this number. If this number is higher than 4.5, then you're getting too thin for a beginner.
