Our son is at Great Lakes Naval Base and we went out to Waukegan Harbor on a calm day in October but the footage was too boring to make a video out of so I made a few more trips to get some b roll and learned about Jack Benny and Ray Bradbury. Waukegan has the potential for real revitalization but right now, it's a bit of an armpit of a city. Thanks for asking about my dad. It looks like he should be able to leave rehab soon and go back home. I appreciate your support, Becca!

A wealth of history, Christian, very well done. Fascinating to finally hear where Evinrude outboards came from. Moving a lighthouse 1400 feet, wow! The harbour looks nice and very clean. The real estate between Chicago and Waukegan is super expensive and exclusive. Waukegan chose to build a lot of industry along the lake. Similar towns to the north, like Racine and Kenosha, had industrial lakefronts but have overcome the blight and rebuilt their harbors with excellent housing. The poisoned water and enormous Outboard Marine factory are gone but getting to the beach, you have to drive through some very unattractive areas. This video started out as some very boring footage I didn't know what to do with but I went back to get some b roll and discovered the cool history! BTW, the lighthouses are usually just big metal cans. When the harbor towns grow and improve their piers, they just push them out to the end of the new pier. Too bad they lost the beautiful fog building and quarters. Really glad you came along, Chris!

I had to travel up there two more times (an hour each way) to get some b roll and it finally all came together. I hope this town recovers from its problems. This city is on nobody's list of vacation destinations but since it's near my son's naval base, we went there and I flew the drone. The footage turned out to be too boring so I went back and discovered the sad history that's hurt the economy of the city but also interesting information I never knew. His name was Ole Andreassen Aaslundeie but he changed it to Evinrude. I tried putting the name into Google Translate but they don't know the word. The lakefront between Chicago and Waukegan is some of the wealthiest real estate anywhere but Waukegan never did too well. I really hope some forward-thinking people can turn the city around. The OMC factory is gone except for the water tower which looks like it might fall down on its own. Glad you same for a visit, Micke. Always grateful for your kind support!

I would guess it was to make it easier to pronounce.😉 And another thing about older use of names in Norway and Scandinavia, as you probably know, is that the middle name always was the fathers name. For example Andreassen means "son of Andreas". A girl would be called Andreasdatter. The last name was usually the name of the farm or place he was from. My last name is Brandsgård, and it's the name of the farm my great-great-grandparents built in the 1840 or 50's. 😃

@@flyinglowe Well, yeah. Outboard Marine dumped PCBs into the harbor and they were responsible for cleaning it up and it was part of the reason they went bankrupt. The factory is torn down now. Hopefully the city can revitalize the area.

I did a flight at Whitby harbour before and you could see a big difference in the colour of the sea where the harbour water met it. Literally there was a clear line either side of the harbour entrance which I assume would come down too the pollution in the harbour from the boats.

@@flyinglowe We have a new problem in Lake Michigan over the last several decades. The invasive zebra mussel has proliferated so much that they're filtering the water too much. They're filtering out the creatures that the trout, salmon and other fish need to survive. If it's not one thing, it's another! Those lines you see between bodies of water could be temperature differences and how much or little the water is churned. It's probably not levels of visible pollution.

Thanks, Jim! Glad you stopped by! The weather's been getting really crappy and it's been harder to fly the Mini 2. The shoreline of Lake Michigan between Chicago and Waukegan has some of the more expensive real estate but Waukegan has been through some tough times. I hope things turn around for this hard-working city.

This was filmed over three trips. The first was in October but the footage was so boring I didn't want to make a video out of it. Since my son is at Great Lakes Naval Base, it gives me a reason to go up there and I got some b roll to try and make it more interesting. We haven't had any real snow yet here.

The harbour and the lighthouse look awesome. As always very interesting background info. A pity the original Building was destroyed by a fire. Flying over a harbour is difficult in Germany due to regulatory issues. I would love to do it.

Not saying that I would prefer an restrictive weapon law but you definitely got more freedom in certain areas than we do. On top of all regulatory restrictions we have a crazy data protection regime here which makes filming even more difficult. I wish you a great start into the new year!
