I travelled with ICE train for first time to Dresden and Leipzig cities last year. The ticket was not too expensive for the speed (250 or more kms per hour) and distance. Paid only 40 something Euro to and fro from Brussels, Belgium. Otherwise I used only regular German trains.

Best is to have a pre paid credit card...I think there is no transaction fees. Then you can top it up time to time. If you use your credit card, while traveling to Europe, better inform your bank about your travel period
