Another trick I learned is to spray your bush with alcohol before you dip it in the mica to brush it on the cured resin. Remember a few videos back when the mica didn't stick very well to the resin when making something similar to this? The alcohol will make the mica stick to the resin and even after it evaporates it keeps it from floating up. Just one spray before each dip into the mica powder. Or you can pour more alcohol into some mica and stir it up and use a paintbrush and paint it on. Both ways work well for me. It also keep the mica from flying around and breathing it in or having to wipe down your molds or project.

I would love to see a bee and a ladybug insert. I would be more interested in buying the mold if it was themed like all nautical or all floral. A captains wheel would be cute or an anchor too. I really do love your molds.

These turned out great. Oh just a fun idea, I recently saw a video by Steve McDonald Arts and Crafts where he used nail polish in his molds then added resin. I'm wondering how that might look with these molds or even directly onto the resin pieces like you did the mica powders. 💜

I started using a silicone brush instead of alcohol for clear stuff. It’s like the ones you get for brushing infused butter or oils on the bbq but it’s tiny. It’s about .5” wide and has maybe 8-10 small silicone bristles. It’s very easy to clean after. I just swoosh it around in a bit of alcohol and wipe it off but I use that and brush the resin all around the molds, just a little bit to, as Julie says, break the surface tension. Then I pour over that. It’s not an actual layer brushed on but enough to get it wet it’s the resin. Really helps with bubbles on the edges. I lawyer run it around the edges/corners/points before I pour into the mold. I got it on Amazon. I just searched for very small silicone bbq brush.
@isabellrc

I was wondering about this myself. Not to get myself more confused, can you brush over the resin like Julie was doing with the silver?
@PNWCagey-Dub
@PNWCagey-Dub Жыл бұрын
@@isabellrc You mean to apply a top coat? Yes. You can use it to push it around but it doesn't do well getting the edges. It's better to use your stir stick to get it to dome.

@@funo6581 Yw! Look for small pastry/basting brush. I even cut half the bristles off of one for smaller molds. They are really cheap. I saw a pack of 12 for $6 on Amazon so you could get those and cut them down in different sizes for different projects. I have a tub of alcohol with a lid so it doesn't evaporate and I leave it in there while I finish pouring the rest of my resin. I put plastic wrap over it and the little tub while it sits in there so it doesn't smell or evaporate or catch on fire. Then I take it out and just wipe it off with a baby wipe. They stay very clean that way. I had a typo in my original comment but I meant to say I take one I cut down and run that around the corners or stick it into points or shy places bubbles get trapped easily in molds. Just kind of smear a small amount of resin everywhere. It keeps your gloves clean too. I used to use my finger (gloved) and dip it in my resin and so that until I found these little basting brushes.
@funo6581
@funo6581 Жыл бұрын
@@PNWCagey-Dub I’ll check out Amazon and find those silicone brushes. A jar of alcohol is a good idea too and also that you’ve taken safety precautions with it is great! When I first started doing resin, I watched a resin artist on yt torch her piece right after using alcohol inks. It instantly ignited and it wasn’t a small fire, it’s been awhile but I think she was working on a canvas. She had her fire extinguisher right by her side and quickly put it out. I loved that she left that in her video, she could’ve just left that mistake out. Instead she gave her viewers an impactful visual lesson on how quickly things can become very dangerous. Resin is such a fun medium and it’s easy to get caught up in the creative aspect and torch out of habit. Thanks for all your great tips!

Those turned out beautiful. That last picture really showed off how gorgeous those color shifts are. I recently purchased Let’s Resins heat mat, it works pretty well. I’ve just used it once so far with coaster depth pieces on it, it specifies not to use it on deeper pours. It cured them enough to de-mold in about 3 hours. Let’s Resin needs to send you one of those too!😊

What a WONDERFUL new mold, Julie! These turned out so, so beautifully! Those color shift micas are just gorgeous! Just not sure that the black cherry is actually cherry, but it IS a great color! Oh, that's a scallop shell. 😊 You asked what we might do if we had this mold? Hm. I know I would definitely try sand, maybe with tiny pebbles. Maybe even combine that with light blue water on one section...? I know I would use black filler for the inserts. That just looks better, I think. Then do the sand layer.

The emanite that you called black cherry you originally called maple that you were going to put in it, I don't see black cherry but it certainly looks more maple to me. I don't understand that color. Though I must say now I have a new mold added to my list of wants. I am still wanting the sand dollar that I didn't get in the inserts I ordered. I got a star fish I think instead of the sand dollar. Hello 😊 this has nothing to do with this video but I love all of your videos and so I thought I‘d ask you, maybe you can help me, or someone else here 😅 everytime I pour, my colours keep just floating to the bottom not doing anything 😅 everything lays on the bottom of my mold.. I use a good resin (dipon) and a good quality pigment paste, my room Temperatur is at 20 degree. I don’t get why that happens to me all the time😢 yes, the resin I use is a low viscosity resin but other artists use that too and get stunning effects! Is it because of a low budget mica powder? Or is the resin too thin? Or why is it like that? 😅 please help! I am getting quite frustrated!
@fairyspunfibers9098
@fairyspunfibers9098 Жыл бұрын
@Nina Leoni Mohapp Poor girl! That would be frustrating, for sure! It sounds as if you will need to let your resin sit for a bit, to thicken up, before pouring. Julie *always* does that when creating her pours with a low viscosity - or even a medium - resin, especially when using a paste! Otherwise, everything falls to the bottom and blobs. Mine, too. Gotta wait! Each resin is different, so you may have to experiment with the wait time. If you have a cabochon mold of some type, pour your resin into several cavities, then start timing by 5 minutes apart (IF doing blooms, petri, cloud effects) before adding inks & pigment pastes. IF your resin is already colored, then just let the batch sit for maybe 15 minutes, then pour into 1 cavity. 5 minutes later, another one, etc...maybe as high as 35 minutes for last pour. By then, it will be pretty thick, I should think! Take a Sharpie marker & label each cavity with the times. Sharpie comes off silicone with alcohol. Sure hope this helps a bit?
