Fun fact (and maybe little known), if you HOLD that button which creates the bubble from the gum you can freely control the bubble on screen and collect many Zs that way until you let go of that button or Bart gets hit. With this method it is waaay easier to collect the Zs at the right placement

I rented Bart's Nightmare for SNES from Blockbuster back in 1992 and absolutely HATED it. It was just confusing and in hindsight, I realize it was because there were no instructions included. Many years later, I got to understand the mechanics of the game and appreciate it more. It was still hard as f*ck, but I don't hate it anymore! 😂
@belahsha2 ай бұрын
Yeah I remember only liking one or two mini games when I played as a kid. And I HATED the dinosaur level! Edit: I forgot these were separate games.

There should be a special level in hell for people who didn't return video game instructions at rental places. Same for the people who don't return their shopping cart / buggy / trolly into the corral.

Skinner bending over to tie his shoe front and center is definitely one of the more sadistic choices in Virtual Bart. It's a reference to the show where Bart throws Lisa's prize-worthy tomato at Skinner, so it's so tempting to do.
@organicketchup51712 ай бұрын
The idea of Springfield becoming 'The Road Warrior' after a meltdown at the nuclear power station is so 90's cool.
@spiff100092 ай бұрын
IMO, The tomato throwing mini game in Virtual Bart is so good it could’ve been its own, full game with some tweaks. Spinning the wheel and getting literally anything else was such a bummer

I always thought of Bart's Nightmare as a reversed clone of Paperboy, where you have to collect paper instead of throwing it away.
@VenusHeadTrap22 ай бұрын
I had Bart's Nightmare for the Genesis around 1996 and tried to beat it (without the instructions) for many years. No can do, the Indiana Jones level I could never beat. Had no idea you could crack the whip or pan the camera over to make Maggie's pacifier miss.

These two games are very central to my childhood, I distinctly remember a particular summer in the 90s where I was off from school and would rent these two out randomly over the months I had to do nothing but play games
@thefractalcactus2 ай бұрын
By modern standards, Bart's Nightmare might not be considered very good, but I have great memories with it. I think it's appropriately surreal.
@MrVariant2 ай бұрын
Yeah I just wish more developers would remake bad games and fix them like ff2 pixel remaster (turning off trap door encounters and attacking with double shields to buff ultima by quadrupled weapon/magic boost) and romancing saga 2 (so much quality of life either better acting than trials of mana with no multiplayer to take away).
@OdaVenom2 ай бұрын
By modern standards? There was only one kid I knew who had Bart's Nightmare game. He swapped it for a time with another kid once. After that kid played it he came to conclusion that it's crap by the standards of any time period, including Precambrian. But the funniest thing is that kid who owned BN skipped almost 2 weeks from school pretending to be sick, in hope that another kid will forget they ever traded and he could keep his game instead of Bart's Nightmare. Needless to say the other kid wasn't very happy about that. 🤣 Me personally, I played both of them much, much later on emulators... I was so happy that despite my curiosity I never had them as a kid, I would've probably ram my head into a screen.
@imfsresidentotaku96992 ай бұрын
Modern standards are the worst of both worlds; They’re unreasonably high to the point that they’re used to harshly judge things from a bygone era for elements that make them unique, and they’re disappointingly low to the point that people who try too hard to adhere to them end up with something that’s tame, boring, and not as fun as what came before.
@OdaVenom2 ай бұрын
@@imfsresidentotaku9699 I don't know what you are talking about. Some of the best games of the modern era trying to emulate retro in a various degree, and triple A releases are getting critique and flopping. And although some people are overreaching to find the next target for their angry style reviews, some of the games are just not that good and had an appropriate reputation as far back as the time of their releases.

My relationship with all Simpsons games from the NES and SNES eras is one of wanting to love them because they were graphically great to look at and I was a fan of the show, but actually hating them because of how crap they were gameplay-wise. I did have a friend who was just a savage at Bart's Nightmare on SNES. I never quite know how he did it, but he got really good at it over the course of two weekend rentals where we all slept over at his place to watch him beat it.

I think a big part of the disappointment with many of the Simpsons games was that most people I knew were wanting and waiting for the Konami arcade beat em up to come to console and instead we received overly complicated, awkwardly controlled mini games, they do look nice though. Thanks for the video Jank, or is it Janck? 😃

I rented both of these on SNES, and later acquired a used copy of Bart’s Nightmare, so, sadly, never had the quality manual from buying it originally. I loved these games, despite having trouble with a lot of the different game modes. In Virtual Bart, I remember getting fairly good at the Tomato throwing game, tho I don’t remember if I ever beat the egg level. As for Nightmare, I remember the virus level being the easiest and never managing to get to Godzilla Bart stage 2. (And probably stage 2 of what you called Idaho Bart. Is that really what the manual calls him? I never knew! Googling the name just turns up a congressman from Idaho named Mike Simpson…) It’s awesome to hear someone finally talk positively about these two games that I grew up loving as a kid.

I remember feeling very accomplished when I beat Bart's nightmare. My favorite part of the game was the blowing up the viruses as well. Is a very easy level but I just thought the graphics of that level were so beautiful and so cool and so much better than anything else out after comparing it to Bart versus the space mutants on the NES. I never got to play virtual Bart but it was a game I always wanted it's just it was never in stock at the rental place and I didn't have money to buy it

Nightmare is a bit unfairly maligned but the game generally works and is pretty fun. There’s a lot worse especially licensed games. Virtual Bart is just a stripped down sequel to Nightmare and only one of the mini games is fun

I owned Bart's Nightmare. The game would have been much better if Windy World had less crap flying around and quicker spawn time for homework. Or they could have just made the whole game into a Bartman Shmup.
@daganisoraan2 ай бұрын
Drop the street part and the whole game would have been much more enjoyable. But the devs knew that while fun, their mini-games would have made the game last 20-ish minutes so they padded it with a long and hard segment to give the illusion of content.

All they had to do was have instructions on screen , because fighting out what to do with an unforgiving game is criminal .!.. Devs don’t realize nobody like a game that the ai goes too hard and give the player no sort of power. This game is set on die .! And if they had made it easier and accessible to the player it would have been super fun. . .
