0:55 Don't forget both shows had a federation of sorts, in Star Trek it's the United Federation of Planets, in Seaquest, it's United Earth Oceans (UEO), both have a backstory of experiments gone wrong with genetic engineering and a WW3, both have at least one aggressive country that doesn't follow treaties, (In Star Trek, it's the Cardassian Union, in Seaquest, it's the Macronesian Alliance), both the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D and Seaquest have a semi-exploration, semi-military role

Hey! I remember the Seaquest from my youth. They show'd the show one summer time & I really enjoyed it. Although it was just one time run since in Finland we don't really show these "little classics" on the TV that often. Mostly we see more famous & wanted TV shows these days.

Here's a fun bit of trivia about SeaQuest. The pilot aired on the same night as Lois And Clark's pilot. Of course I watched Superman but SeaQuest beat the hell out of it in the ratings because it was developed by Spielberg in the wake of Jurassic Park. The reviews were universally glowing for the L&C pilot but they knew they would be creamed so the producers begged ABC to reschedule. They wouldn't do it and they paid for it. If you watch the two pilots now though, it's super obvious which one was better. Lois and Clark is one of the best pilots of all time to this day.

Hi all! A little trivia... NBC originally ran Star Trek in the late 60's. And, as much as I loved SeaQuest, NBC has been trying to make the "next Star Trek" for years. In fact, they tried to use the fact they originally aired Star Trek as a lever on Paramount to run The Motion Picture in the 80's. ABC and Paramount said, "AR AR Earth Humor" and ABC ran the movie. Nice video on the games! Live Long and Prosper!

I recently rewatched SeaQuest and I must say your summary of the show's three seasons was pretty accurate. The second one being the absolute worst of the whole series. Personally I liked the first season most although it was sometimes a bit slow and contrived (as in: "how to we transform this thing we want to comment on into an underwater issue. There sometimes just wasn't any conceivable way).

I was super young, so I can't honestly judge, but I loved SeaQuest. I got to like Star Trek when I was older, but the idea of Star Trek rip offs in different settings sounds like a fantastic idea to me. People need to stop poo pooing idea theft, it's brilliant. As long as the content is essentially new, and copyright/trademark is more or less respected (lots of complexities there I'll just ignore for now) then I don't think you can really claim to own an idea. If you think that you can turn an idea into something profitable, and you think that if someone else gets your idea and they can turn it into something that makes your thing less profitable, then it's your job to try to keep it out of their heads, not their job to ignore it once it gets in there. The distinction between 'idea' and 'intellectual property' is a blurry one, but "Serialized stories about a scifi crew of explorers' is definitely just an idea. Captain Kirk however is intellectual property, if you have nothing to do with Star Trek's creation and without permission you take the character of Jim Kirk, and put him into a TV show where he's in an Earth prison in the Early 2000s and he's trying to break out, then stealing the character is not okay (With many, many caveats) but stealing the 'idea' of Prison Break is fine, and could be amazing. So in short, no one owns ideas, because they aren't worth anything unless you can make them into something, and if that something is better, that just means it's better, and if the guy that first came up with the idea made something worse, then it was worse. (A billion complexities and complications notwithstanding)

" _Every story has already been told. Once you've read Anna Karenina, Bleak House, The Sound and the Fury, To Kill a Mockingbird and A Wrinkle in Time, you understand that there is really no reason to ever write another novel. Except that each writer brings to the table, if she will let herself, something that no one else in the history of time has ever had._ "

@deathman1021 Sounds like you saw a Season 2 episode. Please ignore that whole season. You'd be amazed how much different (and better) the show was in Season 1. It got more serious and military in Season 3, but for the love of Darwin, pretend Season 2 never existed. It's better that way.

Ah, come on. They even acknowledged the similarities to Star Trek. Think of William Shatner having a guest spot and the number 1701 appearing in the communications protocol and so on. That is not a bad thing, though. TNG simply paved the way for the sci-fi boom of the early nineties and paying homage to that is okay.
