This is a guide to creating your own 16' by 10' outdoor movie screen using EMT conduit from your local hardware store. I used canopy fittings found at: www.gvtoolsandtarps.com/ . I purchased the tarp on eBay for around $25.00 shipped. So just search "16 x 10 white tarp" on there. I also found the ball bungees on eBay. They were around 10.00 for 50. I believe this screen used around 38 of them. The rest of the parts can be found at Lowe's or Home Depot and Wal-Mart. I can't seem to get my construction guide to upload, so if you want the guide email me at: joshnpowell@hotmail.com and I will be glad to email it to you. It is in WORD format.
UPDATE: Here is a link to the construction guide on google drive:

Thanks for the idea, Josh. My wife recently informed me that she wanted to have an outside movie night with the grandkids next month. What I heard her say was that I needed to figure out how I was going to make this happen. This was a very, very good idea that is not only inexpensive, but can be used for years to come. Thanks so much, pal.

I use plastic whit table cloths for a screen. Works perfectly. I simply tape two long white dollar store plastic table cloths together and drape them to the back of my house and we sit outside on the deck and enjoy a nice outdoor movie. The total cost is $2.00.

This video of yours has kept my hopes alive of setting up a personal projector screen which is huge and not like any regular backyard ones. 8 years later , do you have any suggestions of setting up a similar one but not the one that can be hooked to the ground. Instead , my situation is a lil' different where I want to set this one up on my terrace where a ground support is not much of a help. Also , the inflow of wind is heavy when compared to what it's on the ground. Stability is a primary concern too.

very nice! I am looking to make something about like this, but a rear projecting screen, how is the image on the back side of the tarp? as that would be the viewing side for me, also my projector is 3000 lumens, so it would bleed through a bit more than what yours does.. thanks! and nice video and screen.
@JoshPowell81
@JoshPowell81 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The tarp does show bleed through some. I imagine with a brighter projector it would be even more. I feel you could watch it from the back with no issues. You would just have to alter the frames design so you wouldn't have the middle brace bar in the way.

Thanks for doing the DIY write-up. I built this this past weekend and had it literally up for 3 hours or so before a gust of wind knocked it down. I had 4 tie downs and thought it was stable. All of a sudden, we hear a big crash and run outside. I had maybe 4-5 EMT conduit pipes bent like they were nothing. All the canopy fittings were good though. I wonder if I set these into a hole with a concrete base would stabilize it even more. Oh well, I think I will stick to some pre-built projector frames behind the side of my house so the wind cannot even touch it.
@JoshPowell81
@JoshPowell81 6 жыл бұрын
Rob Lozada sorry to hear that! I've had mine up in some pretty big gusts and have never had a problem at all. I've even had mine up in some steady winds with no issues. One person emailed me and said they dug out and installed concrete sleeves in the ground to make their screen more "permanent" when they have it set up, so that could definitely be an option.
@Sw20td06
@Sw20td06 6 жыл бұрын
Wow, it wasn't even that windy and mine toppled over like nothing. It was as if I made the frame out of PVC or something. I was planning to do the concrete sleeve idea too, but wondering if I would end up with the same result. I wanted to do the concrete sleeve idea behind the pool and project the image from across the pool.
@JoshPowell81
@JoshPowell81 6 жыл бұрын
Rob Lozada I was actually thinking about doing the same thing at my pool. I'm sorry that you had that happen to yours. I'm sure the concrete sleeves would be more stable. I was even thinking about putting eye bolts in my deck for the tie downs. I'm sure that should make it steady as a rock!

@JoshPowell81
@JoshPowell81 8 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. You can pull the guide ropes out of the ground, swivel the legs around and lay the screen down flat on the ground in a couple of minutes. So it can definitely come down quick. I will see if there is possibly some ways to make it stay up during high winds, but I'm not completely sure.

I have a 16 x 10 tarp screwed to the side of a barn for my projection set up and LOVE IT , but may need to do something like this. How well did it hold up and did you have any problems with it staying up and not falling over?
@JoshPowell81
@JoshPowell81 7 жыл бұрын
Jim Rhodes: It has held up really well. I am beyond happy with it! I have had it standing up during pretty hard winds too. Having the "feet" as wide as I do, and the ropes definitely help! You can even put a second set of ropes at the bottom of the screen under the first set and it will add even more stability to it. If you build one like this I promise you won't be disappointed.

@JoshPowell81

Hello! You just want to make sure the projector is capable of creating an image large enough for the size screen you use. And the higher the lumen count the brighter it will be. This is especially true if you want to use the projector during evenings when it’s still light outside.

Your canopy has more holes for strapping it down to the frame work. And the photos on GV Tools shows canopies not to have near as many holes for strapping it down..that's the reason for inquiring about the canopy or tarp which ever way someone see's it..Thanks.
@JoshPowell81
@JoshPowell81 2 жыл бұрын
Oh okay! I see what you mean. I’m not sure about the canopy/tarps included in the kits. The kits are something they put together after I made this video and they started selling some fittings because of it. I got mine from Amazon. It wasn’t very expensive at all, and it does have a lot of grommet holes around it… it really helps hold it tighter!

@JoshPowell81
@JoshPowell81 8 жыл бұрын
I agree that black out cloth would be better. I have another smaller screen made out of black out cloth, so I can definitely tell a difference. I was wanting this to be a cheap project for families and black out cloth is really expensive. Plus like you said, you have to punch in grommets too. At night time the the tarp does a pretty good job! especially considering it was only 20 bucks!

I like your frame. Only one issue... The center support bar. If someone were to build this using an actual projector screen, they couldn't do a rear projection. Here in lies my problem. I'm willing to shell out the $200 for a 300" projector screen, only I have no idea how to span the 23ft top of the frame without it sagging. I want rear projection too so there's no obstruction for the projector and no projector obstructing the view for anyone.

Cody Abbott: The tarp I used was 16' wide, so I used two 8' pieces of conduit plus the size of the fittings to make up the total size. I didn't cut anything at all on the width pieces. It ended up probably being 16' and a half feet wide total because of the extra added by the fittings. I hope that made sense!

Elad Sinay Hello, I have had it up without tie downs but it did seem a little unstable when the wind would blow. I'm sure it would be okay though on a night with zero winds.

i had an idea then. is there a way to get a fitting that goes on both ends , Right and left poles in a 45 degree down towards the floor and then connect to the rear legs sort of like a soccer goal post would be to stop it from swaying backwards? i havnt been able to find a fitting like that. i can show you my rough drawing of it if you would like. my email is eladsinay@gmail.com so shoot me an email and ill show you what i mean. thanks for the quick reply btw

@JoshPowell81
@JoshPowell81 7 жыл бұрын
I use a portable PA for sound. I hook the audio cable from the dvd player or whatever to the PA sound board and then there is 2 speaker cables from the sound board to the speakers and that's it! Super easy to set up. Here is the exact one I use: www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-GEM-ES210MXBLU It's like 299.00 but you can get it for 5 monthly payments of like 60.00, not too bad at all. Then you'll also have an awesome audio system for parties too!

what thickness is the tarp and do you loose any video light through the tarp?
@JoshPowell81
@JoshPowell81 8 жыл бұрын
The tarp I used was 12 mil thick. It has some bleed through, but when it is dark outside the picture looks great! There are other options like screen paint that you can put on the tarp to eliminate bleed through, or you can use blackout cloth, but there is going to be a price difference of at least 100.00 or more. I have a smaller screen made of blackout cloth as well and for the big price difference I really don't see an amazing improvement that would justify the big price difference. That's just my opinion though! I hope you have a great day!

The bungees pull the tarp enough to keep most of the wrinkles out of it. There are still some small ones, but once the projector is on, you won’t even notice them.

I built my own a few years ago and found that most poly tarps are glossy.. I ended up with a standard cloth tarp. It was not white white, but it worked out fine. I had pole pockets sewn into the top and bottom. This held it nice and flat. We would raise it up like a sail on a ship.

@JoshPowell81

The first frame I made was out of PVC. It worked well but I had to use a bigger diameter to make up for the sway that comes with using plastic. So it will definitely work, you just have to increase the diameter some.

i have been questioning why projection looks so washed out so i started researching black projection screens and they offer a way better contrast ratio in well light areas with cheaper projectors 2000+ lumens. a flat silver/black surface shows great resolution and detail absorbing reflection that can cause blurriness. but in the darkness the silver screen performs better obviously with an expensive projector. so i have been thinking of splitting the difference with a silverish black screen, but i am in just in the speculation stage right now! any words for the wise on the quest to a descent projection setup? was there anything you learned that you wish you would have done in the first place because you wasted money on an inadequate setup? thanks for your time!
@JoshPowell81
@JoshPowell81 7 жыл бұрын
Brandon L that is some great information! I can definitely see what you are saying about the darker screen material. I might try one out myself. As for advice, the only thing I would tell anybody is to buy the most lumens you can afford. I would love to have a more powerful projector, but the one I use is definitely better than some. But maybe the darker screen would help that out as well.

Really nice design, id did something last summer with pvc pip and made it free standing just little smaller. Making new better and bigger this summer. How late at night do you have to wait to use it or how dark doesn't it have to be? Here mine 1st one kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpeTf4tnqZWLadk . I used some black spary paint on the back to darken it to prent light from coming through it and paint the fron with outdoor rated screen paint to give it a screen gain. Amazing. Going to be testing a new screen paint on the new one.

MrSuperman258401 I have a smaller screen that I made a couple years ago with PVC. It is probably a third the size of this one. I usually wait for the sun to set before I start watching movies. I live in the country though, so I don't have much ambient light to worry about. I really like the paint idea though, does it provide you with good results?

I must say, even though this video is as old as it is; this is still awesome. I do hope that, even though it's NINE years after this video as of my writing, that you're still rocking this awesome screen (or some variant of it)! I just wanted to stop in for TWO reasons. With the first of which out of the way (basically letting you know how awesome this is /and/ thanking you for the vid), I did also want to let you know that (also) using a "grey" or "silver" screen could have (possibly) yielded just as good if not better results than the "white" ;) These are my (personal) favorite TWO videos that cover that! kzbin.info/www/bejne/amHPl4Z7h5p1qsU kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqCZYZSLaa6cnNk So, I think I may totally use this tarp idea for my outdoor screen, but I may try the "grey" or a "silver" tarp over "white"... I'm not totally sure as I am such a cheap-skate I will be seeking any possible alternatives that may be even cheaper than a tarp (maybe even a drop cloth?) But chances are, since there may be some viewing with ambient light - after watching those other TWO videos I shared, I am definitely thinking grey may be better than white! TL;DR - you did an awesome job ~ possibly try "grey" or "silver" instead of white!
