16 Characters Criminally Wasted In Naruto Shippuden

Many Naruto side characters were introduced in Naruto part 1 were wasted and misused in Naruto Shippuden. There were many characters like Rock Lee, Kiba, Temari, Kurenai, Kankuro, Ino, Shino, and Anko that didn't have an end to their character arc. There other characters such as Neji who had a terrible end. Neji's death was not satisfying.
There other minor characters such as Ibiki, Yugao, and Baki who were just forgotten. So let's talk about 16 characters that were criminally wasted in Naruto Shippuden. We're going to consider the Naruto Manga and not take the filler from the Naruto anime into account. Even though some of these characters may have had some more development in fillers, the vast majority of them are terrible.

Shino being irrelevant in shippuden is an absolute war crime. Rock lee survived his fight against gaara but somehow he's more dead after surviving and recovering from that fight than he was while gaara literally broke his limbs. Kiba, just a shit side character, done dirty. I guess he was never hyped up much to begin with though. Neji, got done absolutely diabolical, died a meaningless death. Got done in like true side character trash by some piece of wood. The worst of these crimes imo is rock lee.

@@11_valyghost2 Ninja abilities are Taijutsu, Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, Bukijutsu, Fuinjutsu, Kenjutsu, Kinjutsu. Summoning weapon from scroll is a type of Space-time ninjutsu and storing it using Fuinjutsu. Tenten is also proficient in both Taijutsu and bukijutsu. Does it not look ninja to you?

The side cast was fumbled so bad that even now years after that the story was ended it’s still that outrageous. Sakura was literally supposed to be the 3rd team 7 member and the FEMALE MC but they somehow eclipsed her completely, even some Akatsuki members don’t really feel like they were really used, Lee literally got all of his screen time robbed by Guy, and the rest of the Konoha 12 was forgotten. I never considered Naruhina interesting and Neji dying for that pisses me so much cause he deserved way better than that. He was already so useless and absent in Shippuden that even him dying to Kidomaru would’ve been way better

Neji’s beliefs and ideals were beaten into him by his family , years of trauma and literal slavery. His mindset was unhealthy at best and he died happily. Yes his death was implemented terribly but even in Part 1 during sauskenretrival Neji knew that Naruto was right. None of the lcans, the Nara clan, the Akimichi clan nor the Yamanaka clan are explored on their own we only know they are allies and always team up together for some reason. We never find out who the original founders where, what kind of traditions they have, why they even team up with the other clans in the first place other then them I guess thinking they made a good team. Akatsuki Supression revealed the Nara clan has like a whole forest to them where did that ocme from? Why do they have that? Do other clans have territories to them like that? No, the Nara clan jsut does cause I don't know. The Uchiha clan that's literally genocided by the time the story begins have more history to them then the entirety of other clans in Naruto. The Senju clan, Hashira's clan, the very clan of the first hokage. What's their history? Fuck all that's what lol.

You know, I understand One Piece is a much longer show/manga, and therefore has more time to develop characters. But let's be honest, Oda's ability to connect plotlines and develop his less relevant characters is a step above everyone else (for those who have seen One Piece). Say what you will about the main story, but nobody makes people feel important like Oda. Characters that I REALLY disliked upon first seeing them and then this legend makes me love them within a few arcs. It's impressive. That said, even with the limited manga chapters Kishimoto had, he definitely did still miss the mark on many characters. We all know the ones lol.

It all has to do with Oda not making his arcs all about fighting. Kishimoto seems to take in the DBZ approach and make most of his arcs about a series of fights. Look at the Kazekage Rescue arc, it's basically jsut a list of fights, "Naruto shows up and Team 7 has their rematch, then immeidatly after Gaara has a fight with Deidara, then like 2 chapters later Itachi shows up and the team must fight him now, but at the same time Team Guy is also fighting Kisame and after those fights are concluded Team Guy fights their clones while Sakura fights Sasori and Naurot nad Kakashi fight Deidara". It's why most pre-Pain Shippuden arcs feel so short they are mostly just a series of fights with little room to breathe. The Alabasta arc is almost 2 times longer then the Kazekage Rescue arc yet has the same amount of fights because most of the rest of the arc is spend epxloring and adventuring and letting the characters interact with each other.

It still pisses me off that Kiba is one of the laughingstocks of the franchise. Everyone likes dogs, and he has a cool ninja dog and they turn into flying drills. I'm pretty sure the data books said Kiba was also the fastest in the konoha 13 besides Rock Lee. He basically lost to Naruto due to luck, and then just did nothing for the rest of the series. I wish everyone didn't hate him, the werewolf fighting style is also very cool.

I like the Rock Lee spinoff for actually giving focus on the side characters. Team Guy has actual screentime. Tenten had her rematch against Temari. Heck, the author of the spinoff asked Kishimoto to draw up a design for Hinata's sister since she was completely forgotten in all of Shippuden(minus all the fillers and the epilogue movie which came after the spinoff). It may be a goofy non-canon adventure but it was nice to see Team Guy getting focus for once.

What bothers me the most is the waste of the Jinchūriki, something that even "our" dear video friend in his "good" rewrite (Because in reality it is horrible) did not do either and I also waste them by killing the stupid ones without mentioning What is this about eliminating each person's Red Mantle ability when there were better ways for it to be there but for each Jinchūriki to develop something unique and the Red Mantle is actually not the Chakra of any Bijū but is actually the Essence of the Ten Tails, which is still active, I mean that "The Red Mantle" in the end was something more intrinsic to each Bijū but in reality it was a nuisance that should be eliminated, but no, "it is better to kill them completely stupidly who wants to see a Group with a Huge Potential for Development and Impact, much larger and gigantic than any other secondary character and that the Jinchūriki would contribute much more throughout History to the point that they can be the Equivalents of the Straw Hat Crew in the Naruverse", seriously In the Canon, the Jinchūriki HAD MUCH MORE TO GIVE, not to mention that each of the Jinchūriki, both in power and character development, are thousands of times better than most of the Konoha characters outside of the main group and one or another out there. Come on, all the Jinchūriki *SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE MAIN PROTAGONISTS OF THE ENTIRE SHIPPUDEN* and with the focus of Naruto going to look for them all to unite them to fight Akatsuki who would perfectly still be threatening and without the need to catch even a single Bijū In fact, it would leave them in good shape when they saw that it took the Nine Tailed Beast Carriers to defeat all the Akatsuki together once and for all.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but the filler actually helped Neji in a big, bad way. The anime at least gave him some screen time and even some resolution with the Sound Four. If you only read the manga, Neji shows up to save Gaara, disappears into the background for the whole series, and then dies to a stick. Forgive me. I meant many sticks.

What I didnt like about the war arc was that they brought back characters that were convinient for the story. For example Asuma. Asuma was strong but not anything out of the ordinary. Literally the only reason he was brought back was because of choji. There were also other shinobis that were brought back which just made me question the consistency of Kishimotos decision: Why would he bring back average/a little above average strenght shinobis, when he already had an entire army of Zetsus? I obviously get the reanimations of the stronger characters, like the dead Akatsuki members, Madara, some older Kages, (and altough I dont think they should have existed, but) Ginkaku and Kinkaku etc. because they were really strong, but a character like asuma was simply not anything special.

i think one good thing one piece has that gives it a lot of narrative leway is that there is often implied time between arcs or islands where other characters are given the space to develop. While naruto is very often time constrained. This plot point has to happen right after this plot point with nothing in between. Which I can totally see makes it hard to find places where side characters can have their moment to shine.

japanease manga market is really something else, to understand the reasons behind all these lost potentials, you have to understand that managakas are not artists for japanease society, they are artisans, they create what the the society wants and needs in this case plot twists. that s why we see for every manga list of the most liked charcters so that the mangaka focuses on these charcters in question and throw others to the bin, ecpecially in naruto s case, where s it s not as long as one piece to have time to develop most of the things, and not as short as shinegki no kyojin to deliver the whole experience in one shot....it s sad but it s the matter

Bruh, to me these series have not just lost promising characters, to me they have lost their entire philosophy and spirit. Before shippuden a lot of attention was put into the idea that tremendous motivation and resilience finally bring you to great results and looser can eventually become competitive with champions if they put enough effort. So the weak looser-boy Naruto manages to surprize everyone while dealing with huge problems. But in shippuden we discover that he is not just poor unlucky boy that is forced to deal with pain and hard challenges using his unbreakable spirit but a freaking reincarnation of semi-mythical super-ninja of the past besides posessing power of jinchuriki, heritage power of 4th hokage father and heritage power of uzumaki clan from mother. So that literally tells he was ultimately crazy strong since birth, it just took time to develop his power. So the idea that "looser can become champion" got lost and trashed by the idea of "he is the freaking chosen one inevitably destined to be victorious". My point is that I would love this show way more if Naruto was rather a simple boy that occasionally had to enter legendary level of challenges and managed to deal with them due exclusively to his strong spirit but not due to being born a superhero, that became a disappointment to me.

Biggest problem with this show is that they got so much characters and even more in the second show, that it’s just too damn big to manage. The funny thing too about that is that there’s all this filler nonsense, and episodes that don’t really mean much of anything that weren’t just added in the anime. A better end to Neji's character arc would have been if he became the head of the Hyuga clan. This change in the status quo would perfectly suit the implied theme in Part 1 of destiny and going against what others tell you that is. If someone had to die, let it be Hiashi instead, and his dying words could be about the old Head and Branch system being wrong or something as he passes the torch to the next generation.
