omg ur AP English project did not have to go THAT hard! exited to hear about your poetry journey! you're so right! the only way to correct anything is to start! Ariel is a wonderful collection. and the Ephron essay collection is fun! the charm in her films exist, too, in her writing

winter love has been on my to-read list for a long time! i also have an apple in the dark by clarice lispector on my bookshelf that i’ve reaaaally been wanting to read, thanks for reminding me about both of these books!

I’m enjoying your videos, thank you! Coincidentally, I also spoke about Lispector’s Apprentice in my last video and I also loved it. After I got over my initial intimidation reading it I was able to see the humorous side and irony of this couple who are trying so desperately to be “ready” for love and pleasure. As for poetry, I reckon that anyone who loves Cusk and Lispector is ideally suited for even the most “difficult” poetry, and I really look forward to your future poetic reviews. Thanks again, Eleanor.

ahhh i’m glad you loved an apprenticeship!! lispector is someone who you just have to let take you on a journey, and i think looking at her work like poetry is such an apt comparison!!

Thank you for the recommendations Cass! Short books are the best ❤ As someone who has recently gotten into reading poetry, it can definitely be intimidating. What helped me was telling myself that I can have an enriching experience without necessarily "getting" everything or reading the "right" way. With Ariel, many of the poems gained a whole new meaning to me when I googled what relevance they had to Plath's personal life (not sure if that's how they're meant to be read though lol)
@casskrugАй бұрын
love this mindset!! the experience is really what you make it. i feel like plath’s poems would be especially interesting to look at in the context of her life. thank you for tuning in!!

You did it! 15 books in 20 minutes! 👏👏👏. think I have that Lispector on hold at the library, so I’ll be dipping in! Oh Cass…Jeanette Winterson…I adored her memoir! (Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal). Amazing writing in that memoir. The Lost Dgtr…I loved loved that book. 🥰🥰. So nuanced. So good. Tove Ditlevsen…how much I enjoyed the memoir series. I’d love to revisit it actually. Difficult but this strong drive to just keep on going. I was cheering for her all the way!

ahhhh i hope you love the lispector!! i need to get my hands on the winterson memoir, i passed on it at half price books forever ago and haven’t come across it since. thinking the copenhagen trilogy might be a 2025 reread for me, we should do a buddy read if you want to revisit it at some point as well!!

Thanks for all these suggestions, I added pretty much all of them to my Goodreads! Poetry is a genre that, just like anything, can have a wide range of styles that you'll either connect with, or won't. Personally, I would recommend starting with something that is on the narrative side of the spectrum. Just read a couple poems a day (this is not a genre to power through, in my opinion). One of my absolute favorites is Instructions for Traveling West by Joy Sullivan. My partner and I read this out loud to each other while on a road trip (headed west... haha) in June and it was such a cool experience. Andrea Gibson and Jarod K Anderson are other favorites. I'm currently reading A Little Middle of the Night by Molly Brodak and unfortunately this is a style that doesn't really click with me because her meaning is so opaque that my eyes kind of glaze over (despite loving her poeticism in Bandit).
@casskrugАй бұрын
very good point about not powering through poetry!! i feel like that’s something i might be tempted to do with a short collection. i’ll check out the poets you mentioned!! love that you’re making your way through molly brodak’s work after reading the blake butler!!

@@casskrug I think for me I just didn't understand how she didn't see her compulsive recording as clearly debilitating to her life before she had the kid.
