Joe, K8LKC, introduces his crystal radio capable of receiving CW and SSB signals on the 160 & 80 meter ham bands. Circuit uses variable capacitor tuning, high-Q coils with inductive coupling to a 1N34 diode detector. A Hartley beat-frequency oscilliator supplies an unmodulated local signal used to detect the CW/SSB signals. The product of the mixed local signal + incoming signal is audible at the speaker output.
This was the first time I ever heard a crystal receiver circuit used to tune in ham radio signals! Next, I will post a more detailed sample of the quality of the received CW (Morse) signals!

This is very impressive, I know crystal sets will work on 80 and 160 but have never seen or heard it before. Thanks!

Your crystal receiver is brilliant and I didn't know that you could tune it down to the 160 and 80 meters that's very impressive and it is very sensitive picking up the CW and SSB signals it sounds really good and you've done a great job of putting it all together as well so well done and I hope you enjoy listening to the amateur radio bands. I've built ton's of crystal set's, never realizing that you could actually couple it to a simple hartley oscillator circuit and viola you now have a b.f.o. that's amazing!

Very nice!! I attempted this about 40 years ago, but couldn't get it to work. The detector and oscillator worked just fine independently, but just not together. Congratulations to your friend. 73 -- de Mick, WB4LSS

Brilliant!! Can you post the circuit or a link for the vfo you made and exactly how you coupled? for us goofballs. I got the crystal radio downpat and double tuned good litz coils tec. but am astonished that I been missing out on ssb.Nice Nice job sir.

I made a very similar receiver for 160 and 80M but not as good looking as yours. It does work quite well for CW and SSB as you say. This video makes me want to dig out the parts and rebuild it again but better :-) For me I found that I not only had to peak the antenna but also add a inline trap for a pesky sw broadcaster.

The heartly is probably adding to the gain by regeneration. Any oscillator can act as a regenerative receiver. Very nice and stable.

He said right at the beginning that he was using a 278 foot long wire antenna. I would have to rewatch the video to hear how he set it up. He mentioned using coax with it. Hope this helps. 73 de K9KXW

I am really surprised that there was enough sensitivity to make that work I know there are simple short wave receivers that have no rf amp but they do have if amplification. Your radio is very interesting. I doubt you can get very high up in the bands though.

deryl Robinson I am sorry for just now noticing your question, but as +locoman1963 stated SK stands for "Silent Key" meaning the Ham operator has passed away and can no longer operate his telegraph, CW, key. I hope this helps. 73 -- de Mick, WB4LSS

For all of you asking for a schematic, this is a simple direct conversion receiver. Another method to accomplish the same, is the Q-multiplier receiver. vk3ye has tested this type of receiver and has a schematic. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aprbZpqEp6-saKc

OK looking good. My favorite thing free radio. Have a vfo that I move around to run "am" short wave sets. Even a vfo helps pick signals out "am broad cast radio late nighs. Kinda pushes out co channel noise "Interference ". Verry light power works well. This kinda gives me a chance to get the call sign. Better. Tks for good shoe. De kv4li
