160BHP VW Lupo GTI TRACK WEAPON

In this video, we do something a little bit different. I get to drive a Vw Lupo GTI in which its got a few mods done to it to make it track orientated. Plus if you are on a budget for a track weapon, this is one of the contenders.

They’ll take the thrashing as well! Although the hydraulic tappets always end up sticking and making a racket on the 16v’s... also had a 1.4 16v one shoot a spark plug clean out the engine into the bonnet, was fine though just had to get a thread insert fitted cause it took the threads with it.

I'd agree. I used to own a Peugeot 107 which weighed around 800kg. Fun little car to drive even though it had a 1 litre petrol engine. I now have a fiesta mk6 zetec s diesel which may be fun to go around corners for its ST suspension setup but I still debate if my Peugeot City car was more fun to drive. Engine also I'd say is another factor. The 3 cylinder 1 litre petrol was more better to listen to than the tractor sound I hear in my current diesel.

Lupos/Arosa’s aren’t actually that light at all for their size, and their centre of gravity is quite high because they’re built to take a roll properly (think someone one the forums survived rolling one off a motorway at about 120mph). The GTIs actually have thinner windows to try to bring the COG down a bit, as well as aluminium doors/tailgates/bonnets... Still heavier than a saxo VTR/VTS though, and that’s why they never sold well, boy racers didn’t care that their saxo was made of biscuit tins and would probably crush them to death in a crash, they just wanted to go fast for as little money as possible.

Had a new Lupo GTI in 2002 and it cost me 12k ...... still one of my favourite cars of all time. Fast forward to 2019 and I'm rocking a MK8 ST-Line with 172hp. These type cars have always been the car of my choice, never had a car over 200hp but have driven a RS4 with 444hp and still prefer the more fun in the lower horse power cars..... power and speed is not the important part of driving pleasure.

Another car to consider alongside the Lupo GTI and the Twingo 133 is the Suzuki Swift Sport. The pre facelift is a 1.6 16v with 125bhp and a 5 speed box, the facelift is a reworked version of the same 1.6 16v engine with 135bhp and a 6 speed box. Can pick up decent pre facelifts for £1500 as well, chuck a few quid at it to upgrade the discs and pads along with some suspension mods and they are very capable around a track for not a lot of money

In 20yrs, I reckon the Up! GTI will be lauded as being underrated, too. It doesn't quite fit now because people are expecting a performance car and getting a pumped up city car. It is great fun though and is much more affordable than the Lupo was in its day (where many people probably saved their pennies and just went all out on the Golf GTI)

Great cars had one brand new in 2002 got another one in2019 so glad I did still can pick up usable ones cheap enough but definitely ditch standard suspension also got a tdi sport and an up gti for day-to-day driving each one has its own merits wouldn't mind another twingo too

Nice to see someone modify a car and not just chase big power numbers. Yes people have put 1.8T engines in these with circa 300bhp. But I bet this car would lap a track quicker.

2:25 - are the tyres uni-directional? Kinda looks like they're on the wrong way...so in rain they'd push water to the inside of the tyre rather than the outside..? Either way, stunning car. I had a 1.4 back in the day, Weitec coilovers and ATS Classics...the only car i truly miss..

Nice video Sid, great that the Lupo is getting some attention these days. I'm not into modified cars but have to respect the thorough re-engineering of it that Clayton has done. But don't forget the standard Lupo GTI is nothing like that car. Look at the pitch and roll of the car in your B roll footage at the start of the film, they weren't all that great as standard (definitely no poise or delicacy to the damping). Plus they don't rev that cleanly with the standard exhaust (especially when they retain a catalyst???). They are still fun granted but comparing that to a standard, unmodified Up! GTI is a bit unfair - I appreciate the Up! GTI isn't perfect but it's quicker in the real world (200nm torque at 2000 rpm rather than 150nm at 3000 rpm), much better on fuel, and goes round corners infinitely better than the a *standard* Lupo GTI. However I can't deny that a few even minor mods transform a Lupo GTI and it's a great car. PS I did track days in mine with 140 hp and couldn't "keep up with the big boys" as they were all running modified 2.0 turbo cars (or even faster). If everyone was driving Lupo GTIs on track days it would be a hoot but they don't and you just become a mobile chicane having to look in your mirrors more than through the windscreen, though that could of course just be my driving....

You should really try our a Vauxhall Adam S (if they have the S in the UK that is) With the Recaro seats it's quite a fun car on the roads like you drove it. I've only been in one as a passenger for insurance reasons (of course) but my friend knew he car and roads so that made it possible to push the car. It's a great experience and a sort of hidden gem, the Adam is getting discontinued soon actually so they will become a rarity...

I know it’s not the same but I had this on Grand Tourismo 4. About 190 hp , proper sorted and could go round the ‘ring sub ten minutes. GT4 came with Mac F1 dlc but I just used the LupoGTi .

I have one of these. The rear seats weigh very little so removing them does not make a lot of difference appart from it looks racy. Mine is basically standard but with a lightened flywheel and quick shift. Where I live are lots and lots of sleeping policeman so a lowering kit would not be practical as It grounds on the standard setup.

Would like you to have ago in my vw bora tdi st 6 speed only 600 left and mine is a great example . Stage 1 revo remap 174 bhp at fly wheel . 315 tourqes . Lowered 35 mm on H and R cup kit powerflex bushes. Sitting on 17 " rs wheels .
