Good information. One thing to note, you dont need to cool that steel when you cut the flute because it will be heat treated later anyways.

Im from South Africa. I like what you do. Been turning since early 90s and I know exactly what you do and how to do it. Tools are getting expensive. I will be making some tools soon.

I have to say, you are the only other person who I have seen make his own tools the same way I do and even out of exactly the same materials! Those car struts work great! I also love that you do it with the grinder the same way I do! This is a video everyone should see! I plan to make a large spindle gouge from a jackhammer bit, maybe I'll make a video of that! All the best!

after you heat it to harden you need to temper it so it's not so brittle.
@RickTurnsWoodturning
@RickTurnsWoodturning 4 жыл бұрын
I heated it up to red then quenched it, the tempered it. Bout I did something wrong. The tip broke off after not much use.
@RcWoodturning
@RcWoodturning 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the temper didn't work. Did you use the oven to temper?
@RickTurnsWoodturning
@RickTurnsWoodturning 4 жыл бұрын
You’re right, that kind of brittleness is the result of poor tempering. I did put it in the oven, but I obviously had the wrong temperature or perhaps the wrong length of time. It’s been so long that I don’t remember exactly what I did.

Using a long drill to make a bowl gouge. i have no bowl gouge soI like the idea a lot. :) But I recently found out that its hard to grind the inner radius parallel with the outer radius (See my video). Do you think its possible to drill a hole into the back of the drill bit using a hss drill? Then you only need to grind of one side and your done. If I have time I'll give it ago this weekend.
@MiguelSancheztornoartesano
@MiguelSancheztornoartesano 7 жыл бұрын
It is complicated to drill the bar, it is also very hard steel. I think that with patience you can do it easily the way I did and the tool is going to last for long so it worth the effort. Best
