I played there with Curb Records artist, Steve Holy, the night before 9/11. We drove to a hotel at LAX right after the show and got on our plane at 6:00 AM. I noticed one of the WTC towers billowing smoke on a TV in the concourse and assumed it was hit by a small private plane. Then they kicked us off the flight and when we got back into the concourse, the other tower had ben hit. They dumped all the luggage from all the flights at once and it was all spilling out of the carousels like lava from a volcano. Luckily, the road manager hadn't returned our two rental vehicles, a pair of Jeep Cherokees, and we commandeered them and drove straight through back to Nashville, taking sleeping/driving shifts and only stopping for gas, bathrooms or food. Can't ever think of the Crustal Palace without all those memories flooding back.

The most startling memory of 9/11 was the military scrambling jet fighters and sending them to the Atlantic Ocean and never thinking they might be domestic air flights coming from within our nation.

Buck Owens Crystal Palace (also known as the Crystal Palace and The Palace) is a music hall located in Bakersfield, California. It was constructed by Buck Owens, and was opened in 1996. Primarily it is a performance venue for country music, although other music genres have been heard there. It is also the home of the Buck Owens Museum, which contains items related to his career (some of the items are also available for viewing online). Although it is classified in this article as a music hall, it is also a nightclub, bar, restaurant, and museum. The Crystal Palace is designed in the Western Revival style, a style that resembles buildings from the 19th-century American Old West. The interior resembles an American western town from that same period. The museum is located in display cases around the first floor, which resemble the windows to the building.

The idea for the Buck Owens Crystal Palace originated in the mid-1980s. Buck spent most of his early career performing in small, smoke-filled bars and “honky-tonks” around the country. He wanted a high-class place for country-western music to be performed. Buck also wanted a place where he could be himself. Construction started in the mid-1990s. Buck was closely involved with the project. He approved 135 change orders, several costing over $100,000. He also did not visualize from plans as well as seeing the actual construction. According to Jim Shaw (Buck Owens' right-hand man), on some occasions, he would see something constructed, and have it reconstructed larger and moved to a different location. The cost of the project would eventually reach $7.4 million. Also, the large number of change orders would delay the opening over a year. The Crystal Palace was opened in 1996, and shortly became a Bakersfield landmark.

All I can say is Buck Owens & Tommy Collins, and a saloon. This R&B fan was tricked by her boyfriend who said we were going to see Sam & Dave! Turns out Byron, who was a cattleman had met Buck Owens years before. I had a great time & it started an appreciation of C&W music. It grew more during the 1970s when these musical outlaws dominated the airwaves.

I used to print all of his data sheet, did you ever see the tripple necker. At the same print shop i worked every year with Buck doing his printing for his pro/am golf tournies at the cou try club. I saw the Apollo 16 frame at 4:50 . I remember hearing a brief recording that Buck Owens made, that must have been during a concert. Buck said that the astronauts will be taking a cassette tape of the recording with them to the Moon. He then asked them to leave the tape on the Moon. So now I know it was the Apollo 16 mission Buck was talking about.
