I understand Professor Watts probably is trying to offer us hope, but I'm afraid this may be a case where a historian's "long view"ism isn't particularly helpful. "It will all settle itself out after a few civil wars and a few hundred years of misery" might be a factually plausible outcome for America's decline and hopeful rebirth, but it's also useless to us who have to live through that. To borrow a comparison you two brought up, we need people with a Roman approach ("just actually do it") rather than a Greek one ("let's theorize about it") when it comes to reforming America.
