this was really interesting. i used to, many decades ago, open these really easily and thought i had lost the knack but it must be the false gates which perhaps were a later feature and make it trickier.

Why does the inner wheel have a "wider cog" at the position of the true gate? Is this to support a locksmith feeling for the position of the gate and easing their job?

What did you use to grind off the rivets holding the lock together? I've suddenly gotten this huge desire to take apart a combination lock in the past few days, to see the inside and have fun taking the pieces apart and putting them back together. With this aim I bought the most cheaply-made combination lock I could find, from eBay. I thought it was made of plastic, but it was made of metal painted to look like plastic. I guess this is pretty obvious, but it turns out it's really hard to break open a lock. Who would have thought? I've been trying to wear down the rivets with various tools that I've got in the shed (screwdrivers and sanders), but they're really not up to the task, and have just scratched the surface. What did you use? Cheers!

The ability to pick a combination lock has allowed cats to be freed from sheds they accidentally got locked into just before the owner went away for a lengthy period of time.

Very good explanation and thanks for taking one apart for us. Does the cheap one that you opened, feel the same as the ABUS when decoding? I experienced that for example the ABUS 165/40 feels a bit different to the 145/40. So I thought there might be slight differences in the behavior. You know how mad I 'm after combinations lock ;-) So please tell me the name of the Chinese padlock - I believe that I can get it on ebay but I need to know that name. Thanks and I'm glad that the padlock-deal with g-man has worked out well :-)
@LockNoob
@LockNoob 7 жыл бұрын
Potti314, hi! The Chinese one feels similar, but you can feel that the tolerances are poorer in it: it's no Abus! As for the name of the lock... you already have one :-) it's the same lock as the one I sent you in your video 285 :-)
@Potti314
@Potti314 7 жыл бұрын
Haha, while writing my original comment I somehow thought that I knew that Chinese lock. Now I checked my combination locks and found the exact same model ;-) Still don't know how it came to me as I could find a video about it but it feels different to the ABUS - you can feel the bad quality. Haha, either I have too many locks or I'm getting old or both ;-)

The TSA locks are usually very poorly made. I really would recommend buying another if you can as I’m not sure repairing it will be too practical.

@@advaithkandiraju1720 hi to be honest i didnt put my mind in it that much do dive so deep in it. But i saw some miniature sized ones in the market but not as small as i wanted and still dont know how they work... i looked at patents and still nothing. What is your application for it? If not a secret. Maybe i can help you.
