It will be interesting to find out how efficient these passive houses are after a year, five years, ten years and so on.

They will be even better in Five, Ten years. We may even have Fusion Power by then. :-)

Scott Kennedy mentions that he would save 450 thousand on the build cost due to the absence of a hot water heating system. I understand the units are heated using base board electrical, obviously the building will need a generator/power supply if the electrical was to go down. What would that cost for a building of this magnitude?

Charles Farner additionally they don't include any information regarding the outdoor temperature. ...usually it's cool and damp here, but this winter we broke rain and low temperature records... 300 watts to heat a home in -10 Celsius seems quite unreasonable

Often condo owners don't need to turn their heat on at all because of all the heat being generated by the units around them. Body heat and electronics contribute as well. I bet one gaming computer could heat an entire unit. Most units will only have one exterior wall. It's like wearing three coats instead of one. That's the power of top of the line insulation techniques. If it doesn't work you can just turn on your hair dryer for a few minutes.

Removing that hot water heater and replacing it with a generator would add about 38 kW of electrical load. 300 watts in 85 units is 25.5 kW of heating load. Though that doesn’t include the retail on the bottom floor. Assuming it consumes energy at the same rate of the other floors gets us to 31.25 kW. Add a 20% buffer and round up to 38 kW. Generac sells a 38 kW natural gas powered backup generator for ~13,000 dollars.

I love your videos and passive house. I love that BC is supporting and promoting passive house. But I highly doubt the apartments and businesses located on the Northern side of this building will have low heating bills. If this is the case I hope they recognize that these buildings should probably only be approved where the southern exposure to the sun is correct and the building be only one apartment wide. This way all apartments get the solar gain about evenly.

funny faux pas: the visual at 3:45 is the Temperance Passive House, and implies that it is "just" "a modern built house, probably 5 - 6 air changes per hour (ACH)...". Everyone that knows that it is a certified passive house, knows that they must have met the value of 0,6 ACH or better. Somebody is going to be miffed.

What a wonderful idea and approach. UK will never achieve this kind of way of thinking. Because people aren't socially and eco educated at all.

watched this GOOD NEWS video as the year shifted in2: Year of our Lord 2017. "LIKED" the dollar symbols raining down ! funny & nice touch. that guy @ 5min 20sec in w/circleSaw ! also funny... holding the saw up like that. makes me feel like: there r others "out there" as lazy & dangerous as I ;- ) Basically: I am AMAZED that it took SO MUCH TIME 4 peeps 2 get buildings made this intelligently.

Holding a circular saw that way is common practice in Framing and I do it all of the time and so do others around me. You forget that we are professionals and use these tools all day every day. I'm a Carpenter/Framer for 12 years and now a Prospective Student in Renewable Energy Engineering Technologies (I have my prerequisites) in Alberta.

First thing is that Rental Wood Framed passive House is really a bad idea, because of the high possibility of constant damage to the various control layers. This is the domain of Concrete Composites, Scott will discover this very quickly because he works alone on accepting advice from experts. Wood Frame Passive House has no lifespan record, nut Wood Framing in past homes last an average of only 32 years, that's not very promising. Look at that sad cross section mock-up and you might agree. This project will haut cornerstone for many,many years to come.

This type of shoe box living is terrible for mental health
@mindfulmagician7550

What is the correlation to this being terrible for mental health? My understanding is that the units have great indoor air quality with a constant change of fresh air and the temperatures are more or less constant which equates to comfort. If anything, living in a Passive House is healthier for the body which has an impact on mental health.
