165 - The Dangerous Lowest Tunnel On The Canal Network - Droitwich Canal

Today we head out of the Droitwich basin, eastbound for the Worcester & Birmingham canal. First, we have to navigate the mess that is Droitwich, with 4 swing bridges in the space of 200 yards! Then we go onto the river Salwarpe for about 500 yards and on to a new canal... well new as in the sense that it wasn't there before. The canal was just slightly to the south of the new line, the old one now being built over and so that's why the Droitwich canal trust had to reroute through here, in the restoration project. And then we come to one of the lowest tunnels on the network, up there with Froghalll tunnel which is 5ft this one can vary depending on water levels but usually, it's about 6ft. But will we make it?

That bridge was low. Andy did well with that turning and not hit the moored boat. Lovely cruise again and nice quiet spot for a few days. Don't blame you for keeping the cats in when you're moored in busy areas.

We just don't want to take the risk letting them out where it is busy. It's too stressful.

Top tip for getting under the M 5 make sure you need a pump out and if at all possible the water tank is full🙂and that last bridge like a cork out of a bottle!Pleased to hear Andy is catching some fish.

The water tank was almost full so that was good so we were quite low in the water. We thought we might have to take the solar panels off but it was OK.

Andy and Josh done a tunnel yesterday it was 2000 yards a really long one. I wasn't there as walked back to get the car as they cruised through Kings Norton about 10 miles to get to a quiet area for the weekend when Andy goes to work.

The car is fixed for now but we have to take it back to Worcester in a couple of months as the MOT is due and we have been told the timing chain is stretched and needs replacing at a cost of £900. The bad luck keeps coming I am afraid 😨

Going down the Worcester Birmingham towards Worcester then turning back? I will never forget the 58 locks from the Severn through Diglis basin and up to the top! although I suppose you aren't on a timetable like us hire boaters have to be, so you can take more time over the trip!

We are going down to the Avon and heading back around back to Worcester up the Severn as the car needs it's MOT and timing chain replaced so the garage in Worcester done a great job so we are going back there. We can take are time. The trouble is when you are on a hire boat you want to see as much of the canals as you can in a limited time.

21st of February Steve we filled Olive up at Wheaton Aston and it was 86.9p a litre. 1.34 is still quite cheap compared to everywhere else. We paid 1.42 the other day. I walked into Wheaton Aston it was a tiny little village with a lovely church and a Spar. Quaint little place.
