Some superb wildlife filming this week and the bat detector was very interesting. I have a drawing on my boat of a nuthatch by Winifred Austen, framed and signed by the artist many decades ago, so I have a particular fondness for this bird.

Greetings from Las Vegas. Last May I was on a ten day cruise down the Grand Union around the Gayton Junction. I'm still fighting the urge to sell my house and buy a narrowboat. It's a wonderful dream however.

Your ten day cruise sounds like it was exciting. It is a big decision leaving your house and buying a boat isn't it? There are also many changes afoot with the canals, funding and licence fees which makes the whole thing even more uncertain, but this aside, I wouldn't change my narrowboat life for land life yet. Fabulous vlog, I’m seeing lots of red admirals too, even at this time of the year, early October. You’re my favourite Friday night entertainment. That was exciting cruising on the aqueducts. It sure was narrow, even for Alice Grace! Also that must have been wonderful to go bat sighting with your friends' bat detector recording their sonar chirps and beeps while they ate and chattered with each other above your head. How delightful to tune into them as they flew above Alice Grace. I wonder if Zephyr can hear them? I would love one of those bat detectors! Jenny🦇🦇📱🎶 p.s. Hi Jenny, that is such a good question about Zephyr hearing the bats. She didn't show signs of hearing them, but Maggie barked once when we stood listening to the bat detector which is a sign that she heard something, but it's hard to tell whether it was what we could hear or if she could hear the bats directly? @@themindfulnarrowboat I just googled this and they said that the frequencies used by bats are within the range of dogs. How clearly the dog hears the sound depends on several factors, their age (how well or not they can hear), the frequency (wavelength), and its volume. 🦇🎶🐕

Good evening Vanessa what a interesting vlog especially the bit about the bats. What a amazing little machine which enabled u to listen to the bats talking. In my early years after leaving home l had a bedroom in a shared flat were the bat's flew in2 a hole in the outside wall, they ended up in the cavity of the walls and drove me crazy with their noise standing looking through the window in darkness watching them navigate the hole it was like a scene out of Star Wars. Your Photography/Videography never fails to impress ...... And who doesn't love a 'Secret Garden' ?? .... I read the book when i was very young, then discovered 'Our!' Very Own Secret Garden next to the 'Hillands Hotel' in #Wargrave ... Overlooking the River Thames from the top of Bombs-Hill (Accessed ONLY from the top of a block of Garage Roofs :-) ...... Magical Place ... magical days ... Now all covered in New-Builds of course 😞 ...... Bats are fascinating little creatures ... We live in a town centre - near a few churches ... They are everywhere at dusk ... When Our Youngest was young she wouldn't have it that we had bats at the bottom of the garden, she totally refused to even LOOK ... (Need to a Bat-detector App Now!) ... I think she was afraid 😂 .. We also have MonkJack Deer and Foxes .. No idea where they come from - or go to ... But it's good to see them every now and again ....

Lovely seeing those bridges I commented about you spotted them with the gap in the centre. I must ealk to the aqueduct but not sure if I can walk followingvthe canal maybe a passage over the road track and stream? Lovely walking the canal from the river in Stratford we must do it again I'm so made up uou travelled it too. Hi Vanessa - I am still watching your vlogs and enjoying every second, however, haven’t changed my mind one iota about narrow boating NOT being for me….seeing that TINY narrow bridge 😳. Well, I’d have been suffering syncopy on the roof (never to be bought around again 😂). I marvel at Zephry and her calm demeanour but marvel, even more, when you calmly watch those ferocious DEEP locks filling up with water….needless to say I’d be on the canal path (letting anyone help me-for money if necessary) wearing four life jackets!!! You most certainly went through a beautiful part of the cut on this trip I was amazed at how narrow those bridges were no wonder you had concentrate on what you were doing. The bat detector thing was pretty cool. Does it work by picking up their radar signals? I was not able to spot any bats though like the ones you caught on your night camera before. I have to admit I was following Heidi the Pirate and her dog before I found your channel she used to have a dog called Pudding before she got Bonnie I hate to admit it but I think Zephyr has more personality. The bat detector has a dial that you turn to different frequencies and then it picks up if any bats are there as each species is heard at a different frequency. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I loved my kettle too but the sparkles fell off and it started to take longer and longer to boil. I make a lot of tea so perhaps I overworked the poor thing😢 Now we have introduced a new kettle into our little narrowboat family and even though you shouldn’t compare, sadly it lacks the personality of our other one!😁 Hopefully your kettle will sparkle and boil much better than ours🤞🤩 Have a super rest of the week, take care🦋🌻

I was reading about some bats yesterday no bigger than 5 drawing pin heads, living in some trees called vintage tree at Worcester just north of thee bridge and can be heard singing to one another at night, so since following your vlogs i am learning some think from you.?

Hello, Vanessa, I have been watching your Narrowboat adventures and have found some of your vlog's when you were off your boat and doing the locks but your boat was either moving into or coming out of a lock. Was this due because your Daughter India was maning the tiller or someone else or do you have remote control. I really enjoy your Narrowboat vlogs.
